Launching Soyuz from Kourou
ESA TV Exchanges

The plan of flying Russian Soyuz launchers out of Europe's Spaceport in
Kourou was adopted in November 2003 by an inter-governmental agreement.

The 300 million Euro project under the aegis of ESA, aims to offer a
complete range of launch services from Kourou, with the medium-sized Soyuz taking
its place between Ariane-5 and the smaller Vega.

Lifting off from Kourou will enable Soyuz to launch up to 3 tonnes into
geostationary orbit.

Arianespace will be operating the Soyuz from French Guiana and has just
announced its first related contract, for the "Guyanese" Soyuz inaugural flight
in 2007.

Today's transmission provides an overview of the project, including newly
shot images of the current Soyuz launch site in Baikonur, and of the future
site in the middle of tropical swamps.

The programme includes an A-roll of five minutes (split audio - English
voiceover) and a B-roll of 8 minutes with clean international sound.

The script will be on-line as a PDF document at http://television.esa.int

A Media Player pre-view file can be downloaded from
http://real-esa.capcave.com/wmp/soykour_14062004_wmplow.wmv

This ESA TV Exchanges feed is transmitted by the European Commission's "Eur
ope by Satellite" (EbS) service. You can find the complete transmission
schedule and download scripts and shot lists, also for ESA TV items, from the EbS
Web site at http://europa.eu.int/comm/ebs/index_en.

More background information can be found on
http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/Launchers_Home/SEMNWTGHZTD_0.html.

Transmission details:
EUTELSAT HOT BIRD at 13° East (DVB/MPEG-2)
Horizontal, F=12,476 MHz (MCPC, Europe by Satellite)
SR=27,500 MS/sec, FEC=3/4

I will try to figure out, by disabling the option: Delete files
from RX.

The MSG Data Manager will only delete files that it specifically
understands. Unless DWDSAT is using file names that closely
resemble MSG-1 file names, the files should not be deleted.

On the DWD Homepage they offer a free Linux Software for to

Well, perhaps anybody from DWD or Eumetsat, reading this can help

If there is sufficient interest, I will look into writing Windows
software for DWDSAT. I think that you will find the software
offered by DWD is only to distribute files around your system - not
to display the data contained therein. If someone can send me a CD
with DWDSAT files (or e-mail some sample files if they are not too
big (1MB say)), I will look into this further......

New user problem

timkearsley <tim@...>

Hi all,

I finally received my EKU and T-Systems software yesterday and
installed same last evening. After a few initial problems (setting
the IP address of the Skystar Rx in recv.ini being the main one!) I
got the whole system working and images started to appear in MSG Data
Manager (what a superb piece of software THAT is!).

However, after about 30 minutes or so data stopped coming in.
Looking at the Setup4PC statistics window showed that the network ID,
instead of showing "Deutsche Telekom AG", showed "No information".
The signal "quality" was still OK however, averaging around 55 - 60%
Switching off the Rx (its the external USB one) and then back on
cured the problem. However, it runs again for a while and then the
same problem occurs. I recall that this has been a problem since I
installed the Skystar software as I would be able to receive digital
TV for a while and this too would then stop until the RX was powered
off and on.

Does anyone have an idea where I might be going wrong?

Best regards,

Tim Kearsley
G4WFT

Hello Tim,

Have not seen this problem before with the USB box version.
But it looks similar to a problem that can occur when the old PCI
card version 2.3 gets overheated.
Looks like a reliability problem in the USB box or the USB port.
Does the box heat up? Does it work longer if you cool the box with a
fan ?

Testing on another PC can rule out USB port problems.

Greetings,
Arne van Belle

Re: DWDSAT

berni_53 <contact@...>

Thomas and David,

I did check once again my logfiles for DWDSat
Obviously I DO NOT receive all these files
But I am not shure if the missing files message
in this extraction (below) of my latest logfile refers
to the upper Channel 3 Data
or the lower quoted DWDSat Data
Strange - there is no message of a CONNECTION to DWD Sat Channel.
How can tellique then disconnect?

David, its true I was always looking for an additional PID, I have
to add to Setup4PC. But absolutely nowhere
in the net I could find any Information about this.
Having found the DWDSat messages in the Logfile I did think
this Data is sent within the Channel 2 or 3 Data Stream.

Questions concerning this problem:

1. How Is to explain the disconnect message in the logfile?
2. Do I have to add a new PID and where do I get the info from?

I would be highly interested in a softwere cabable of processing
this Data!

I used to receive in the late 80s and early 90s the Longwave FAX
Dissemination of the DWD. and DWDSat is the successor of the
successor (FAX-E) of this service

Log File Extraction:

Tim, I agree with Arne that it sounds like an overheating problem.
Is there a fan not connected in the USB box? Does it work better
with the cover temporarily removed?

It sounds as if you should seek advice from your hardware
supplier....

Delighted that you like the MSG Data Manager!

Re: New user problem

timkearsley <tim@...>

David and Arne,

Thank you very much for your replies. They were not the replies I
was hoping for!! I hoped it would be a config. problem rather than
hardware. I can't answer the question regarding possible heat build-
up, but I will certainly operate it with the cover off this evening.

It's disapoointing, as I've had to wait a LONG time for the
Eumetsat/UK Met Office paperwork to be completed and to now have
another delay to get hardware repaired or replaced is annoying.
Still, these things are sent to try us I guess.....

Many thanks to you both.

Tim.

Hi all,

i allready have the pid 500 in my DVB-Software!

Iam very confuse about the different names of DWDSAT tansmissions.

MDD, GTS,GDS

You should have a look to the td10.pdf, td06.pdf and td08.pdf

This description explains many about MDD files and the format of this files.

Because my english language is really not good, i dont understand so much:-(

You will find a list of the meteorological products that comes with DWDSAT

It seems that DWDSAT transmissions comes via LRIT Channel!

A interesting site is

http://www.eumetsat.de/en/index.html?area=left7.html&body=/en/dps/mpef/bufr.
html&a=730&b=1&c=700&d=700&e=0

and

http://www.eumetsat.de/en/index.html?area=left7.html&body=/en/dps/mpef/bufr.
html&a=730&b=1&c=700&d=700&e=0

Please copy it with copy/past into you browser!

Here you will find many about MPEF Products in BUFR Code,
and many descriptions.

My logfile from tellique-software shows the following

2004-06-24 13:26:22.484:File transmission 40dad6660028453b ended: filelist
missing/incomplete
MSG:2004-06-24 13:28:08.812:Disconnect from data channel `DWDSAT', address
224.223.222.25:2711 completed (channel closed)

It seems that i can receive DWDSAT datastreams, but only a disconnect
message is to find
in the logfile. Where is the connect message? And can you see the error
message with
missing filelist?

At this time (where the logfile entries will done) i receive files with bz2
and bufr endings!?
Is it possible that this files are part of DWDSAT?

Where can i find a windows bzip uncompressor?

Can anyone investigate the linux software packages form dwd? Maybe we will
find interesting
infos in this software that cab help us to understand

Thomas

Great News about DWDSAT

Thomas Scheelen <privat@...>

Friends,

now i have found the solution for DWDSAT! Its so easy:-)

The only you need to do is to add the following pids to
your DVB Software:
100
102
300
301
302
500
501

You will see now a reception of 4 channels and many uncompressed files
in the received folder! Some files are compressed....i think!

DWD sends following data:

Synops (but many parts in different plain-files)
Forcast-Images (Tiff format)
Upperair reports (plaintext)

And much more, not seen yet

David it would be great if you coult add features for sorting the images
and join the synop/ upperair files!

I will send you some examples via mail if you want

This may not be the cause but especially with the new mainboards and
AMD processors you should install the chipsetdriver (INF file for
Intel chipset, VIA4in1 for VIA) BEFORE you install any Video drivers.

Good luck,

Douglas,

Whilst I suspect there may be services that require subscription, there are certainly *some* that are available free of charge, namely GDS data, via Eumetcast but it requires a registration with Deutscher Wetterdienst.

The contact there I think is Wilfried Ruiner whose email address, amazingly, is wilfried.ruiner@...

I registered with DWD a few weeks ago and was advised by Debbie at the (Eumetsat) Helpdesk last week that my request for data had been approved. Unfortunately, I've had a very busy week work-wise and haven't thus far had the opportunity to see what exactly is coming through. Hopefully, the weekend will give me the chance.....!!

Hope this helps,
