Would you like the good news or the bad news?

The good news is that I have managed to install the TBS 6903 card in my
Dell XPS system - and using the BDADataEx software with the silicon
bridge I now have two extra transponders being received.

The bad news? While I was manhandling the computer I had forgotten to
remove the EKU and it bent and broke completely!

I have e-mailed ops but it will be some time before I can get another
working EKU I fear.

Oh well, two steps forwards, but a big one back!

Cheers,
James
===============================

Not quite done that myself, but interesting to see the reaction of a professional installer who managed to plug a 110V (rather expensive) piece of hardware into a 240V outlet. Or the one who didn't bother to switch off first - he needed calming down. (I was baby-sitting both).

But you can continue! See EUMETSAT's note B1.1 on page:

https://www.eumetsat.int/website/home/Data/DataDelivery/EUMETCast/ReceptionStationSetup/Troubleshooting/index.html

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To check the username, use a generic user, open the recv.ini file of the reception software (located in the Tellicast installation directory) and replace the lines "user_name..." and "user_key..." with the following lines:
user_name=eumetcastuser
user_key=9Ecast3004us
(use exactly this syntax)
You don't need to reinstall the Tellicast software to change the username/userkey
Now check if files can be received. There should be at least the files "E-UNS_Weekly_Operations_Schedule..." once per hour.
This user name allows only reception of UNS data, system updates and the product navigator.
If this is successful, go to B13 or confirm the username/password with our User Service Helpdesk.
If unsuccessful, try other sections in the troubleshooting guide.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Cheers,
David

Roland,

Do you have this document which explains the setting up of the SR 1?

Roland,

You should be aware that EUMETCast is a professional service meant to distribute data in near real time to Meteorological Institutes, weather services and other professionals. The fact that other interested parties and amateurs are allowed free-of-charge access to this data should be considered a bonus. Nevertheless, if you want to share in the data made available, make sure that you only select the data of your interest. You have almost full control over what you want to receive and what not.

It is not really appropriate to talk about ‘swamping’ and ‘dubious data’. If you have no use for it, don’t take it.

Besides, quite some people of the MSG- group have been trying to help you and answer your questions. I can’t help noticing that little is done with the suggestions offered and the stream of similar questions/remarks keeps coming back. Food for thought?

Regards,

Ferdinand

Thank you for your continued interest, Thorsten !

I do receive part of the HVS-1 data stream. I get only the Goes-17 TPG-3 stream. No Himawari, no Goes 16, etc.

The best SNR I currently obtain - heavy solid clouds - is around 12 dB.

People say that with a - my - 1.25m dish this figure should at least be around 13dB.

I still ignore why I cant get beyond 12dB. I already have spent much time tinkering - readjusting

my dish to no avail. So be it !

I am going to replace my 1.25m dish by a smaller 1m Gibertini dish in the hope to be able

to better finetune the latter. We will see !

I very much regret the decision to switch from 9A to 10A and at the same time to "swamp"

Eumetcast with a mountain of partly dubious data. Visibly reduced power plus

an ever growing amount of data really is a very very bad combination for the average

Eumetsat Eumetcast user !

Just my personal opinion, mind you !

Roland

James,

IIRC, there was an install file for his software, and then an update to the .EXE and language files alone.

Look for:

BDADataEx-setup.zip => .exe for the install
BDADataEx.1.1.4.9.rar for the update

If he has a driver, I'm not using it.

From: Meteorological Technology World Expo 2019 <meteorological.expo.2019@...>

American meteorologists have written to the US Federal Communications Commission to raise concerns over potential disruptions caused by sharing a particular bandwidth with 5G telecommunication companies.

The American Geophysical Union, American Meteorological Society, and the National Weather Association, have all raised concerns over sharing the 1675-1680MHz band with terrestrial communications because of the likelihood of interference with weather satellite imagery and relayed environmental data to receive-only antennas.

According to the letter, NOAA’s GOES-R satellites have several space-to-earth transmissions in, or adjacent to, the 1675-1680MHz band, most notably, the Data Collection Platform Relay and GOES-R Rebroadcast.

The letter states, “The prospect of rule-making in this band without a fully informed record is deeply concerning because the non-federal weather services resulting from real-time data transmitted in, and adjacent to, the 1675-1680MHz band are crucially important for public safety and scientific research. The proceeding RM-11681 is complete with responses from a substantial number of stakeholders across the weather, water and climate enterprise and weather-sensitive industries that provide a compelling basis to not proceed with a sharing arrangement.”

The letter asks for a ruling on the sale of the bandwidth to be suspended or delayed until further research has been submitted by NOAA.

Roland,

Sorry, but I have told you several times that you should be getting at least 14 dB SNR with your dish.
And I have asked you to tell us how and where your dish mounted on your balcony - which could be the problem.

So far, no information.

It is pointless to ask David what his dish/LNB/SNR is as he live much further north than you and his received satellite signal is quite a bit lower than yours.
He uses a 125 cm dish and even with less satellite power than you has higher SNR ~ 12dB.

Here user readouts from across Europe:

You are in the 'maximum Eutelsat 10 A signal area.'

Until you get your dish sorted out and increase your SNR you will continue to have problems.

Best wishes,
John.

Yes, James, English can be a strange language at times, even to native speakers!  Changing the driver is easy, so feel free to experiment.  The only slight snag is that sometimes the crash an take some hours to occur, leading to a false sense of: "Oh, that fixed it, then!".  The issue seems to be an interaction between the drivers and the TBS IP Tool, so whereas TBS provided updated drivers (including different buffer sizes for HVS-1 and HVS-2), perhaps they should have looked at their IP Tool instead.

Whatever, I suggest very careful monitoring of the logs and MRTG graphs from TelliCast, especially if you're going for HVS-2.
