John,

we only have trouts here. Seems to be a wave induced effect in a stable atmosphere like alpine cumulus lenticularis or lower wave clouds in the grampians.
Here is my 50% height and width reduced version from the OLCIs. Sentinel-3B covers most of the picture while Sentinel-3A adds the corner at bottom right.

Cheers,
Ernst

Hugo,

for some reason I was convinced you display GOES-16. Maybe I made today's Sentinel-3X images with the wrong area before and had nothing but clouds. So here are mine:

Unfortunately my scripts are not prepared for downloading OLCI. I do no real orbit calculations as predictions. I just search  the daily files for 'close' segments to a given POI.

Cheers,
Ernst

Hi Ernst,

I do use Eumetcast data but because my new big antenna isn't installed yet I download "Sentinel-3" data from the hub.
I'am busy changing that part of my program so that you can easily download Sentinel-3 segments from the data hub.(future events of Eumetcast in mind ...)
So it is not GOES-17 that I use but Sentinel-3.( channel 09, 17 and 21 == Natural colors).
I always do a reprojection of the image to a Vertical perpective projection....

grts,

Hugo

Hugo,

I wonder what I do wrong. I cannot make a similar wonderful image at 11:30 UTC with PyTroll/SatPy :-).

a) Do you use EUMETCast data?

b) If so, is this ABI channel C01 and C02 or maybe C02 only + some kind of LUT?

My problem is even a load of C02 only says resolution=500m but scene_id "Full Disk" 2km at Nadir!
The image then rather looks like 2000m resolution (+ of course the slant view factor) instead of 500m.
I wonder whether there is a BUG in the SatPy ABI reader but most probably I'm just missing something.

Cheers,
Ernst

South Sandwich Islands cloud formations.

geojohnt@...

All,

Whilst tracking iceberg A-68A via Metop images, there has been some good imaging of herring bone cloud formations caused by the South Sandwich Islands and south westerly winds.
This is quite a frequent event it seems.

Yesterdays image, also A-68A's finger is visible to the left.

Regards,
John.

Re: A68 and currents

geojohnt@...

Hello Ferdinand,

Brilliant.
And it confirms the cloudy Metop image from yesterday that the finger - and everything, is rotating.
There appear to have been strong winds blowing from the south west for several days now judging by nearby island cloud formations.

Regards,
John.

Yesterday's sar image nicely shows the configuration of broken pieces and
the crack in the middle of the main chunk. What comes out very well in this
image is the general flow of the currents south of South Georgia and thus
the most likely course of the collection of A68 pieces. The image is 4k
square, hence quite detailed.

I think you need MapToGeo

I'll have a look at the weekend additional.

if you are on Windows with Davids Toolset (GeoSatSignal), you could do that without problems.
You can do that with Pytroll/Satpy too, but it's a little bit tricky and you have to do your own composite.

Daniele,

if you have all Meteosat-11 seviri  channels decompressed at hand that's the list Pytroll/Satpy offers as possible composites. I just attach two of them as images below. Projection type and area can be choosen as well.

['airmass', 'ash', 'cloudtop', 'cloudtop_daytime', 'colorized_ir_clouds', 'convection', 'day_microphysics', 'day_microphysics_winter', 'dust', 'fog', 'green_snow', 'hrv_clouds', 'hrv_fog', 'hrv_severe_storms', 'hrv_severe_storms_masked', 'ir108_3d', 'ir_cloud_day', 'ir_overview', 'ir_sandwich', 'natural_color', 'natural_color_nocorr', 'natural_color_raw', 'natural_color_with_night_ir', 'natural_color_with_night_ir_hires', 'natural_enh', 'natural_with_night_fog', 'night_fog', 'night_ir_alpha', 'night_ir_with_background', 'night_ir_with_background_hires', 'night_microphysics', 'overview', 'overview_raw', 'realistic_colors', 'snow', 'vis_sharpened_ir']

Cheers,
Ernst

P.S. Adding your own composites and enhancements as well as background with Blue- or Black-Marble is possible for rather advanced users ...

Re: Tips to get MSG image result

Hi Daniele,

This is an infrared picture of the clouds with, as a background, an image of landmass.  For example an equirectangular map like the one you use in EUMETCastView.
For the moment it is not possible to generate such a map in EUMETCastView but in Pytroll it is certainly possible... although some programming is required ...

grts,

Hugo

All,

I'm not sure if the 'finger' hasn't moved round the iceberg and is now north of it?

Today's Metop image is rather cloudy.
We need a radar image.

Re: Help to Restart

Philip Robinson

Hi
I am not the best at setting systems up but i will say
I have some of Davids excellent software. I have a 1 metre dish, ayecka sr1, eku, ssd laptop and windows10 and i enjoy wonderful images etc.. I live in Derbyshire. This was all set back up again( after a time for me out of action) about 18 months ago and soon was working perfectly.
I had a lot of help setting up again from David and several others on here. Unfortunately i am  not the most practical person so not the best person on here to ask for help.
I was surprised though when somebody replied to your advice  about setting up again  with the comment. " Why?"

Go for it . Its worth the effort when you can view those lovely images that you work to produce yourself.
regards
Philip
