Ferdinand,

thanks for sharing this. Let others adapt it for Metop-A and Metop-C so we get broader user expertise.
AFAIK Metop-B and Metop-C are in the same orbit app. 180° out of phase. So someone can make a
Metop-X_DAY_stack.py similar to Sentinel-3X_DAY_stack .py to get broad coverage on low latitudes.
And Metop also has data on the night side. What I distributed is named to be a "Starter Kit ..."  only.

Cheers,
Ernst

pytroll working version of Metop stacked

Ferdinand Valk

All,

Attached is the final version of a Metop script that stacks different passes
during a day. Some code was missing to decompress bz2 files, which Ernst was
kind enough to point out.
Please keep us posted of further changes, improvements or innovations.

Best regards,
Ferdinand

Re: Pytroll/Satpy Metop composite

Thanks Ernst.

As usual sloppy reading from my side. Your commented line in the single pass version clearly indicated:

# Decompress all n bestfiles found.

Should have triggered me...

The adapted version now works with normal bz2 files. I’ll post it for others to change it to own versions for other Metop sats and/or night versions.

Btw, finally snow has arrived here and the heated dish can serve its purpose...

Cheers,

Ferdinand

Ferdinand,

The reader only takes decompressed files. The single pass version decompresses bestfiles[].
For your multipass version you have to decompress goodfiles[]. You must add very few lines:

...
# Get useful info back from timmax
dt = datetime.fromtimestamp(timmax)
orbmax = orb.get_orbit_number(dt)
telmax = dt.strftime('%H:%M UTC')
tfname = dt.strftime('%H%M')

## ------------------------------- BEGIN STUFF MISSING
# Decompress all goodfiles found
for n in range (0, len(goodfiles)):
    filename = goodfiles[n][offset:-4]
    cmdstr = toodrp + '/EMCtools/exefiles/7za x -so ' + goodfiles[n] + ' > ' + filename
    goodfiles[n] = filename
    os.system(cmdstr)
## ------------------------------- END STUFF MISSING

# The blend function actually stacks the passes one after the other

Unknown Satelllite Frequency

MZFB@...

Hello
Yesterday I was tuning around the GOES 16 satellite frequency and I came across this Frequency 1693000.373 with some sort of signal. Does happen to know what Satellite it might coming from? Just curious!
Thanks

Re: Pytroll/Satpy Metop composite

Daniele/others,

I encountered one complication for the Metop stacked passes. In the single pass version the avhrr_l1b_eps.yaml reader accepts the bz2 file type, however for the multi-pass it expects uncompressed files instead. I could not yet find out why that is.

For proof of concept I uncompressed a day worth of Metop-B data and then the script completes correctly (obviously adapt this to your local paths).

Attached is both the Metop script and a stacked eurol image.

Ernst,

Do you know why there is a behavioral difference in avhrr_l1b_eps.yaml between single and multi-pass?

Cheers,

Ferdinand

ah…sorry…indeed, there is no stacked Metop script, you are right.

Maybe Ernst will add one if he has time for one Metop sat and we can adapt this for the other two…?

But we already have NOAA-20 and NPP what is quite nice. :-)

Daniele,

I attach two images, one from Metop-C night and one of Metop-B day. Those are made with the scripts in your LEOscript folder. You are supposed to have that too, but maybe you mean something else.

As far as Noaa19 is concerned: I haven’t bothered about it as it is from the previous generation of satellites.

Dear EUMETCast-Europe User,

Further to our email below, please be informed that the EUMETCast Europe back-up transponder changed from E21B to HB13 on 1 February 2021, as planned.

Please find attached the latest version of TD 15 which has been updated with the new official backup satellite parameters for HB13.

The EUMETCast web page has been updated accordingly (EUMETCast | EUMETSAT Website), as well as the EUMETCast Knowledge Base (EUMETCast - EUMETSAT Public Confluence (atlassian.net)).

As mentioned previously, we plan to perform a test activation of the EUMETCast Europe service on HB13 – exact dates and further details will be provided in due course.

Dear EUMETCast-Europe User,

EUMETSAT operates EUMETCast Europe in Ku-band via EUTELSAT 10A (E10A). In case of an unrecoverable failure of E10A, the EUMETCast Europe Service will currently be continued on EUTELSAT 21B (E21B) in the 21° East orbital position.

As already announced via our Weekly Operations Schedule, starting from 01/02/2021, the EUMETCast Europe restoration (back-up) capacity will be migrated from E21B to Hotbird 13 (HB13) in the 13° East orbital position. This means that from 01/02/2021, in case of an unrecoverable failure of E10A, the EUMETCast Europe Service will be continued on HB13.

A test activation of the EUMETCast Europe service on the foreseen HB13 transponders is planned in Q1 2021. During the test, the same data streams will be available on both satellites (E10A and HB13). Further details will be provided in due course.

For technical details on Hotbird 13 transponders and downlink parameters, see our web news: Migration of EUMETCast Europe restoration capacity to Hotbird 13 | EUMETSAT Website

John,

The 'deal' for commercial goods is if <£135 (€150) then VAT is charged
by the seller and then paid by them to HMRC.  No further charges are
made by Royal Mail or couriers.  Sellers must provide evidence of VAT
registration/number and value etc. on the package so the HMRC/Customs
know it is legit.

However if >£135 (€150) then import duty, VAT & handling charges are
raised by Royal Mail / couriers in the UK. n.b. duty 'may' be 0% for
some items.

I understand that  the purchaser is liable for ensuring it is done
correctly at the far end ... ???

Not a brexit issue - this will be the case in the whole of EU on
01/07/2021, been in the pipeline for a while now, but 'blamed on bexit'.

I understand that person to person gifts (non commercial) are free of
all charges if <£35 - with the appropriate forms/stickers.

Hi Ernst, I download only two files related to the pass over Italy. Apart Sentinel-3X script, there are also S3A and S3B scripts. The problem is only that files are in zip format while scripts accept tar format.

the answer is that you probably cannot do anything because the scripts assume that you have received a full day
of Sentinel-3X and then depending on your point of interest find the proper filenames to work with. The zip versus
tar is not an unsurmountable problem but you cannot download a day of Sentinel-3X files from CODA ...
