Re: Missing Segments

Peter Benney <tugboat@...>

After perfect reception since Sunday afternoon I had a period of severe segment loss last night (5/11) between 2015 and 2115. The Tellique log was reporting (wrong interface address 192.168.238.238?). I suspect a red T icon was being displayed. The system returned to normal with no intervention.

Since 2115 yesterday I have had two lost segments
1330
Ch05, seg:5
Ch08, seg:5

Below a portion of the log showing one the wrong interface errors, there were also many "Lost Message" reports.

Conor, I'm sorry to hear about your signal strength problems (yes,
the dish blowing away would not help!!!), but could we please keep
this group for self-help relating to my software, please.

The MSG-1 list would be a more appropriate place for discussion of
signal strength and missing segment issues.

Thanks

Re: Missing segments

Conor Delaney <Conor.Delaney@...>

I have just brought our receiving station off line, the signal strength has
dropped to less than 20%. We have had some wild weather here in Galway
(west of Ireland) so I presume that the dish has been nudged slightly (our
old dish blew off the roof). Our setup is as follows

Receiving Machine: PIII 500 windows 2000 128 megs ram + Technisat DVB
card
Storage Server: AlphaStation 233Mhz Linux and Samba
Processing Machine: P4 3.06Gigahertz HyperThreading

Any alternative thoughts on the cause of the signal strength drop would be
welcome

regards

Conor

Alan,

I do agree with you, but nevertheless it is still another consideration
for
those that are having unexplained segment loss. If there is one thing that
has become clear with receiving MSG on home computers, it is that there is
a
number of variables that can cause problems for some and not others. I
consider myself to be very lucky in that even with a fairly low spec.
computer ( Athlon 1200 -- 768mb ram ) I do not have any segment loss at my
end even when using the computer for my normal day to day use. I even
tried
playing a fairly high spec computer game ( without Data Manager ) with
data
coming in without loss.
However again last night I experimented with Setup4PC and found when I
opened it there was no data loss, but as soon as I opened status, problems
started. Still it is not a worry for me as I do not use Setup4PC when data
is coming in --- I am not interested in monitoring signal level.

Ian

Celestial event this weekend.

Sorry all, off topic, but worth a look.

There will be a total eclipse of the Moon this weekend starting at 23:32 UTC
on
Saturday November 8th with totality from 01:06 to 01:31 and end of eclipse at
03:04
on November 9th.

This is the second total eclipse this year - hopefully the weather will be a
little
more co-operative this time - at least in SE England.

John Tellick.

Trevor
All,

Trevor's original e-mail and Ian's reply got me thinking.
Firstly of course, you should have been able to use a coffee can (1.69 GHz)
feed
with MSG-1 dissemination but owing to that satellite's inability to
disseminate, via
direct reception, imaging is being disseminated via the EUMETCast DVB service
on
Hot Bird-6 at 13 deg. east (at Ku-Band) [and you can't use a coffee can!].
1.69 GHz MSG direct dissemination may not happen till MSG-3 - at least - I
understand, the Ku-band EUMETCast service continuing till at least that time.

Now I know I should know this, having been operational in satellite TV since
the
early 80's, but am not sure.
I suspect someone out there will be able to give the definitive answer.

When I began receiving C-band satellite TV back in the early 80's followed by
Ku-Band reception, I used prime focus dishes and head end feeds and equipment
designed for prime focus dishes.

When DTH took off, the offset dish and LNB took over from prime focus.
Now, the offset dish is elliptical and the LNB (at the focal point) is below
the dish
pointing up into it.

Question.
Is the modern LNB specifically designed (geometrically) to work with an
(elliptical)
offset dish?
Or, can you also place it at the focal point of a prime focus dish?

You can successfully mount two (or even three) LNB's on a fixed offset dish
(spaced
on the LNB arm) of say 85 cm to receive satellites at various locations.
In my case, currently, Astra at 19.2 E and Hot Bird at 13 deg. E.
I tried dangling a Ku-band LNB - slightly offset in azimuth, next to the
coffee can feed
of my 1 m Meteosat-7 dish (pointed at 0 deg.) just as an experiment and was
able to receive Hot Bird (analogue) TV transmissions from 13 deg. E at the same
time,
noise free.

So, does anyone know about the design of the modern Universal Ku-Band LNB
feed geometry?

Regards,
John Tellick.

Hello David, Ian, Douglas and others,

Although Eumetsat does warn for data loss when activating setup4pc
(Have read it somewhere, was it in TD15 ?) I have never lost segments
this way. I switch to Status frequently to watch signal level and
also had it opened for at least a week during the solar outages. But
Ian is correct in leaving the receive PC alone, because I did loose
lots of segments just opening Explorer on the received folder !
Running only a Celeron 800 Mhz with 256 Mb ram this is something I
can live with.
Apart from a failing harddisc two weeks ago, this PC has been powered
on from May and is only rebooted for updates or at power losses.

Did improve on cooling a bit by adding a case fan and removed the
slotcoverplate below the old version Skystar.

I do run a "lean" W2K Pro SP3, have not applied any security patch
and had to disable the scardsvr process before I upgraded to TQ231.
Have no firewall, virus scanner, time sync or defrag running on this
PC and did set powermanagement to "full on".

David try to borrow/get a satsignal meter to check if you do not
suffer from fast signal fluctuations at windy conditions. Or borrow
an old analog sat receiver with a signal meter output. This could
convince the installer to check the alignment and fixing of your dish.

Douglas,
thanks for your options. i use equal ones, but with coordinates of germany
of course ;)
Do you use non-scaled pngs? or are they scaled down by x - factor?

Hello Mike,

Just did an animation on 50 full res. HRV images in PNG format (total 802 Mb data).
Using 1280x960 format, Polar stereographic Projection it took about 10 minutes.

Used GSS404408 on P4@2.4 GHz with 1 Gb ram and W2K Sp3.

If you send me further details, day/slots and and your jobsetup I can test if some unforeseen combination could cause a problem.

Greetings,
Arne van Belle

I had a problem getting my dish aligned; I'm in N Ireland so I've probably
got a similar signal to you. Rather than bring in the "professionals"
consider investing in Timestep's simple alignment meter. (If I remember
correctly about £20-£25.) Assuming you can access your dish, simple hand
pressure on the horizontal and vertical axes will allow to get the alignment
spot on. Here, it's blowing a real gale at present and while my dish is at
the bottom of the mast I use for my QFH and sways a bit, signal strength
(normally 70%) is dropping to 59%, SNR drops from 10.9 to 9.2, but the BER
is unchanged at zero.

You must not do anything with that program during MSG reception or
data can be lost.... not even checking signal level.

I run Setup4PC all the time when receiving MSG-1 and have not, as

Try a few days without the statistics screen, David..... might be
interesting. All I have is the green 'signal ok' icon in the taskbar. If I
want to have a look at signal level I do it after I have shutdown Tellique.
The only other issue (don't know whether it is relevant or not) is that I
have the original Tellique software (pre MSG).
I do hope you will get this resolved. If anyone deserves hassle free
reception, it's you David !

Douglas.

John,

Strange indeed, but I am just wondering if Eumetsat have got you mixed up
with Peter Benney as he contacted them a couple of days ago asking how he
could upgrade his Tellique software. Just a thought.

Peter Benney <tugboat@...>

Dear John, It has been brought to my attention that you require a
Tellique software windows version to replace the one that you had
bought from Tsystems. I am pleased to be able to furnish you with a
copy. Could you please let me know your mailing address so that i may
send out the software ASAP.
John,

If your Dear John was from Pamela Schöbel-Pattiselanno it may well be the result of my request for an upgrade. Pamela said they will be sending me a copy of the newer version of Tellique software soon.

Regards,

Peter
