Data Manager

Ian S Deans <ian@...>

The new beta Data Manager was certainly put to the test this morning. At
about 10.06 UTC only slightly more than half the 9.45 cycle appeared to be
in, yet by just after 10.10 it had completed the five HRIT images I take and
very quickly started to process the 10.00 cycle. The program is clearly able
to catch more than a few late segments and is working superbly.

Solar outage.

Peter Benney <tugboat@...>

During yesterdays period of solar outage outage I monitored the Setup4PC status tab and watched as the quality reduced from 70% to 60% and a normal SNR of 10.8 reduced to 9.6. BER was unaffected. WxTrack tells us peak outage is on the 11 Oct so we may well see a more significant disturbance to the signal.

Just to clarify David. The help files, index and contents and
search are fine. It is just that when I select under Help the 'Read
Me File' option nothing comes up where I can see, though the file
MsgDataManager.txt is in the same directory. A tiny point but I
wouldn't mind trying to track it down.

James,

That's fixed in beta V1.2.2.229, now up on the Web site. Thanks for
pointing it out.

Thanks again David, - didn't want to miss my moment of fame!!! ;-))

One small thing, when I drop a beta onto a full installed version
I seem to lose the readme under the help menu - nothing comes up. Is
that because the prog looks for a specific readme I wonder, and it
has been overwritten?

If you copy the beta over the .exe installed by the main install,
all the Help functionality should remain unchanged. There should
be .HLP and .CNT files in the same folder. C:\Program Files\....
wherever. The file MsgDataManager.txt should live there as well.

Cheers,
David

Judging by this event, you have been quicker than Eumetsat to sort
this out... me not surprised! ;-)

Bye, Luca
I had thought it was going to be more complex, but I had an
inspiration when walking into town yesterday. It is, perhaps,
easier to deal with the problem after it happens. Understanding
just why the rather complex Eumetcast system with multiple data
streams at different priorities produces the effects it does is not
a problem that I have!

Your reports are valued, I know.

Cheers,
David

David I'm running beta 226 here and in the tools there is still a
box for late segments - is it just that they won't be recorded now?

There will be a choice to either record late segments and miss parts
of the picture or see the whole picture but not record the late
segments. At some future point I may add in the recording again,
but this time it would record early segments rather than late
ones.....if you see what I mean!

Animations - now only IR - are running spot on ATM
Excellent!

David,

just had the best example of how solid your code change is; at the
end of the 1930 scan, HRIT segments 7 and 8 and HRV segments 21 to 24
were missing, the first two HRV segments and the first segment of the
next scan were held in the received directory, and everything was
solved in a couple of minutes. No gaps in the images whatsoever!

Judging by this event, you have been quicker than Eumetsat to sort
this out... me not surprised! ;-)

Bye, Luca

Thanks, Douglas. It's looking good here as well. I trust it's
working for others as well. The latest tweak is to make the option
selectable, so it you really need to know about Late Segments you
can do so.

Well interestingly for me the 18.15 UTC HRV segment 24 was late (as I was
watching both computers). Both 001 and 002 of the next scan came in first
but if I saw correctly (HRV difficult to see this late) the 18.15 HRV
'waited' for 024 and all was well.....fascinating !

I'll settle for the perfect images thanks !
Nice piece of programming... congratulations.

Douglas.

Late Segments

Douglas Deans <douglas@...>

Just got back to my computer after being out this afternoon, and having the
evening meal.
Animations absolutely perfect. So either there has been no late segments
(which I doubt) or your software update is working a treat (much more
likely).
The HRV animations are stopped for the evening, but all in all looking
really good.

Thanks for a most useful update.

Regards
Douglas.

Sounds good David.
Up and running with 226 and so far all is well.
Out for a few hours but feel confident of perfect animations when I get back
! (should put the kiss of death on a few scans !)

That's ex Hurricane Kate up near the tip of Greenland by the way.

Thanks

No late reports here after 9:30 David - currently 12:30 GMT

No late segments on the 11.00 UTC scan.
This new development sounds superb, but probably means as of 11.00 UTC
Eumetsat will have rectified the late segment problem !!
I will be out for a few hours this afternoon.

Folks,

I have just had a note from Eumetsat that states: "We are working
constantly to improve the data delivery" and that they are finding
our reports helpful. So please be patient while this problem is
sorted out. I also have an idea for making the MSG Data Manager
more resilient to the problem.

Cheers,
David
