Hi Luca,

Good news your licenses have arrived - and three!
The third will obviously save IRM/KMI having to inform EUMETSAT that you are
licensed.

The UK licenses run for three years from 1st February 2004 to 31st January
2007.
Colin Cuthbert said this was just an arbitrary figure to get things moving
and to see if users wished to continue to be licensed after this period or drop
out.

We now know DWD is only issuing yearly licenses and some are charging
handling fees so the situation appears far from clear.

Ask IRM/KMI for a 10 year license and see what they say?

John Tellick.

you must have missed my reply in an earlier message (#1720), where I
said that there is no user charge in Belgium.

I sent my signed paperwork to both IRM/KMI and EUMETSAT today! :-)

MSG-1 resolution (again)

Lawrence <lawrence@...>

I'm jury-rigged for email now! Brilliant blue sky this morning; then a thin
layer of cirrus, I was able to watch the build up of cloud on MSG-1, and in
some cases identify individual clouds/cloud formations - all confirmed by
looking out of the window!
Are others using MSG-1 to follow very short range changes over a short
time-scale? And to think it's going to get even better!

Robert
Yes, I do exactly this for astronomy. You can get an excellent idea of
cloud cover and now-casting for telescope use. I have noticed that some
cloud is almost see-through.

Hello Nuham,

"Cannot join channel DWDSAT" looks like you have the wrong PID's
entered. Enter PID 100,300 and 301 in the Technisat SETUP4PC Data
Services screen.
Your trial username should be valid until March 02, you don't need
new software although TQ 2.3.1a is recommended.
TQ software can only be acquired at Eumetsat and is not available for
download.

Fire detection using Meteosat-8 and GeoSatSignal

Hello All,

Triggered by an article about agricultural burnings:
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/natural_hazards_v2.php3?
img_id=11876
and the full 500 m res. image at:
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/Archive/Dec2003/WestAfri
ca.A2003342_lrg.jpg
I tried to match the area and time of acquisition in GeoSatSignal, using my
archived MSG data from 8 December 2003.
This did not only result in a nice image but also gave a stunning 13 hour
high res. animation from dawn to dusk.

Although this uncompressed .AVI is 190 Mb, I did manage to upload a zipped
archive of 44 Mb to David Taylor's FTP site.

Those with fast Internet access should try: (File will be available until
Sunday)
ftp://ftp.blueyonder.co.uk/store1/incoming/20031208-msg-FireDetectionAfr
ica.zip
Tip: After unzipping, open this .AVI in Mediaplayer, set option "repeat
continuos" (translated from Dutch Windows version!) and click "play".
Use Alt-Enter to enjoy a full-screen animation, press Esc to stop.

A single image of 172 Kb, including the used GeoSatSignal Job settings can
be found in the MSG-1 and SatSignal list Files area:
200312081400-msg-FiredetectionAfricaGSS.jpg

Please note all images: "MSG-1 TRIAL DATA, Copyright 2003 Eumetsat"
Thanks to David for using his FTP site.

It appears for the moment that there is no charge in France - according to
the "Convention" (=licence).

no, there will be no charge in Belgium for our category. And looks
like Italy will not have any charges too.

I will send the paperwork tomorrow and patiently wait... :-)

Thanks, Luca

John,

Many thanks for that. I mainly use the Web interface (for my most
popular groups) and this doesn't have the delays and problems of e-
mail. However, this whole spam situation, particularly blacklists,
is now completely out of hand. If someone wants a PC tool, try K9.
It does an excellent job.

A bit ironic that there is an advert at the top of this screen for
Yahoo! Groups Spam Guard. I expect that's triggered another alert
somewhere!

Thanks for the warning John, and you recommendation to check filters.

Cheers,
David

MSG License: good news from Belgium

Luca Bertagnolio <lucaberta@...>

Hi all,

yesterday I had the pleasure to find an envelope from IRM/KMI, the
Belgian Royal Met Office, with three copies of the "MSG Draft Licence
5 - Educational Use/Research Project" already filled in my name, and
ready to be signed. I will then need to send one copy to EUMETSAT
and one to IRM/KMI.

The license paper needs to be completed in Article 7, Duration, with
the beginning and end of the period required. And this is where I
have a question. Was this period already fixed to, say, one year in
other countries licenses, or did you need to specify this, like I am
being asked?

I am not sure if there is minimum or maximum time to ask for the
license, so I am looking for experiences from others to avoid
requesting a too long or too short period for my license.

Thanks all for sharing your experiences regarding MSG licensing.

Bye, Luca

HRV section selection

Lawrence <lawrence@...>

Given that we are now into routine Meteosat-8 operations, I wonder why
the HRV section always seems to include the 'wrong' side of the
illuminated earth, particularly in the evening? Currently, as at 5.30pm
the eastern part of the southern polar region is being imaged even
though of course it is the western part that is in sunshine.

What I intended to ask was:

In GeoSatSignal, is it possible to put maps on the viewed images.
I have the "Show Country Boundaries" checked but nothing appears on
the images other than the ThermalFC and remapped. I would like to
do the same as appears in DataManager but in Geo Sat Signal.

GeoSatSignal regards the source images as untouchable. So if you
want to see the country boundaries just select "greyscale" as the
false-colour option. The False-colour tab should then show the
boundaries. Open visible or IR as you wish.

BTW: questions about my software would be best asked in the
SatSignal Yahoo group.

Cheers,
David
