I don't suppose it would help but has anyone affected by the
problems (Windows XP) tried adding to the boot file, the very last
line, /pcilock - according to Microsoft knowledge base this can
help with PCI IRQ conflicts.

[boot loader]
timeout=2
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /pcilock
^^^^^^^^
Didn't know about that one, James. As I read it though, this means
that you have to sort out the IRQs yourself first, and then Windows
doesn't touch the result.

Talking of interrupts - the 188 byte packets come down at a 27.5MS/s
rate. What is the resulting bit rate? 100Mb/s? One bit every
10ns? So a 188 byte packet lasts 2us? There's no way a PC could
handle 500K interrupts a second! So what is the packet size and
interrupt rate? How many packets fit into the on-card buffer?

Cheers,
David

Barry,

With due respect it hasn't been a problem for others. None of us want to
spend money that is unnecessary, but Eumetsat have one method of payment by
Bank Telegraphic Transfer and we have to accept that as part of our costs of
set-up, which as David pointed out is extremely low. I think we run the risk
of antagonising Eumetsat if we try to get round their system -- all to save
6.

Ap, all I can suggest is to try a different PCI slot. The card
requires a 5V slot (not a 3.3V one), so perhaps check your
motherboard manual. In the three PCs I've tested, detection has
been automatic. Perhaps you could try the "Scan for new hardware"

I got an E-mail from John M0ADS,
May I enquire as to who this person is and what authority they have on this issue?

Look forward with interest to what happens. I assume the cash has been
sent to Eumetsat's Bankers, not to them.
I for one have always found Eumetsat, very prompt, most helpful and
extremely courteous and will continue to do things in the way they ask.
Despite our amateur status Eumetsat have always treated us equally with
professionals and I intend to operate like that, given the excellent package
provided.

Regards
Douglas.

I'm with you on this one Douglas. I'm all for saving money, but if I am privileged to be able to receive data which would otherwise not be in the public domain then I would like to co-operate as much as I could. The differential does not seem to me IMHO to warrant a different approach.

Cheers,

James

David did you notice that at around 0730 today the animations all took a
little back-step with the clouds reversing direction? I presume this is some
little glitch at the EUMETSAT end.

Yes, there seemed to be one of the steps in the image that we sometimes
observe. As if the scan mirror or its position sensor gets a few lines

Barry, you cannot get your e-token until you have the necessary
licence from your country's licensing authority which for us will be
the UK Met. Office.

So therefore you will need to pay twice to Eumetsat, once for the
software today and once for the eToken later, so there will be two
lots of bank charges. This is unfortunate, but it's the way it is
right now. You will be able get data until March without the
eToken, so there's plenty of time to save up!

Compared to the cost of receiving the data directly from Meteosat 7,
with a large dish for high-resolution PDUS reception, and the key
unit, and the receiver, a few pounds for bank charges is quite
insignificant, although I agree that any extra cost should be
minimised.

Cheers,
David

That will be issued in accordance with what you have applied for in your

If you have applied for full data on an amateur basis that licence should

DVB dish etc

Robert Moore

I ran a three day infra red animation 12th to 15th, western Europe. Not only did
this give a spectacular view of the storm forming but it enabled me to identify
which part of the storn caused segment loss through dish-wobble. Centre of
storm passed through Ireland and then across IOM. I had no segment loss on the
leading edge of the storm as the fronts went through, but from the storm's
closest point and along its trailing edge, as the wind went around to the NW,
the segment losses occurred. A nice confirmation that it is NW winds that are
my problem.

I was away for the high winds here in N. Wales, so don't know exactly how it hit
my house. From my hospital bed (I'm fine folks!) it seemed to be south westerly
gusting to force 8. I left MSG data Manager running and on my return noted some
HRIT segment lossed from 1415 on 14th until 0200 today 15th, losses
concentrated in the earlier part of the period. From then on, perfect
reception.
