Crash, beep beep!

Lawrence <lawrence@...>

My MSG-1 receive computer went crash and let out a series of beeps on
Friday evening, and remained uncooperative on Saturday. I use an
1800MHz machine for receive only, and a separate computer for decoding.
On Friday, the receive computer suddenly crashed with a peculiar error
message about a file, but it was too short-lived for me to see exactly
what had happened. It refused to boot (I use XP Pro), producing a
stream of meaningless messages.

I had some difficulty in booting into DOS because it seemed unable to
read the FD, but eventually I found a Win-ME start disk that it
accepted. The DOS allowed me to confirm that everything was intact - no
HD failure. I then rebooted normally into Windows. Within seconds the
crash occurred and again with the same continuous series of beeps.

As of Sunday, I have been able to identify that the problem is almost
certainly a file in the Tellique software, but I don't know which one.
The errors displayed under DOS only show a limited number of characters
so I know that it is in the Tellique directory.

I was able to show that the computer can sit under DOS and remain
stable. Under Windows, despite doing nothing, it crashes again after
being left on without doing anything.

I am continuing to investigate this. At worst, I shall re-format the HD
and re-install the OS.

I wonder what Tellique file error can have such an effect?

regards

Lawrence

Peter, I think they meant today. Look at the gap:

http://www.david-taylor.myby.co.uk/mrtg/hermes_dvb.html
I see that now here in MSG DM along with late segments being reported, last at 1300 Ch12 Seg 15. The process file showing a lot of "Skipped - data is older than current data" statements. Watching the received folder now current data seems to be arriving.

Your program certainly seems to have sorted it out !

Strangely I do not see any missing cycles or segments and non are
reported by MSG Data Manager.

Same here Peter - I have already informed Eumetsat via my regular
report.

Thanks for your mail Guy re above. Your reply highlights my problems. It
would appear that your mail was sent at 10.04 and was received by me at
17.35.
In fact I have just checked seven mails received since about 15.00 and
everyone has a lapse of between 4 and 10 hours. I assume it must be my ISP
( Freeserve) and to be honest over the last few months I have been having
other problems with them. Maybe time for a change.

Thanks again.

Ian.

Nothing to do with your ISP - Yahoo is overloaded, Check the headers

Geostationary 'sun-glint.'

johnrigsec@...

All,

Current full globe VIS images from MSG, GMS/GOES, GOES-E and GOES-W all
appear to be showing sun-glint at local midday.

The sun at this time of year is still well south of the Equator so nowhere
near directly 'behind' the satellite.

Is the phenomenon sun-glint and how is it happening?

Regards,
John Tellick.

Some got 'bounced' by our mailserver for reasons unknown a while back, otherwise all seems well. When I post I get a copy about 20 secs later.

Sorry to be a little off topic, but are others seeing problems with mail
over the last week or so ( affecting other groups I am in as well ). Some
mails are taking over 8 hours to arrive with the annoying result that
replies are received before the original mail. Not all mails are affected
but certainly over 50% in my case.
I also have not had any mail from wxsat-l for over two weeks, but don't know
if that is part of the problem or not.

Thanks.

Ian.

Eric,

Sorry if this has already been dealt with - I've been away for a couple of
days.

As far as I have been informed there is no charge in Holland for the issuing
of the license or charge for MSG data.

There is a charge for the tq(R)-TELLICAST software and the EKU and associated
software.
That is common for every country in and outside the EUMETSAT Member States
and for everyone who wishes to access the full MSG HRIT/LRIT data.

Those only wanting the 6 hourly HRIT/LRIT 'in the clear' data slots will
still require the
tq(R)-TELLICAST software and David Taylor's manager and display software but
will not require the EKU and associated software.

It should be noted that if you only want the 6 hourly 'in the clear' data you
have to register with EUMETSAT and, I believe, still require a license
stating such, from your national Met. Office.

Regards,
John Tellick.

I just received yesterday an e-mail from Meteo France with an

back to Meteo France.
I think it'll be the same for all French users.

Re: USB system.

Peter Benney <tugboat@...>

Whilst using the SkyStar 2 DVB card with great success, I would be
interested in any reports from those using the external USB SkyStar
receiver for MSG reception.
Douglas,

I am using a Sky2PC USB box. I find the led activity indicator especially useful in giving a visual indication of incoming data.

I have been running with V4.2.8.9999 (08/07/2003) of the B2C2 driver with no problems but shall heed David's advice of possible problems when the EKU is installed and revert to V4.2.1.9999 (02/05/2002).

Regards,

Peter
