Reception PC suddenly locking up completely
Jonathan Williams <jonathan@...>
Ok, after enjoying a simple 5 minute upgrade to the new Tellicast/EKU
software and a couple of weeks of perfect lossless reception following the upgrade, a problem has suddenly developed and I am stumped as to how to solve it. About a week ago, my reception PC (Thinkpad T22 laptop, PIII 1GHz, 512Mb, 64Mb RAMDisk) started locking up completely. The first time I even noticed in fact was when my entire network 'went down' - all my network storage disappeared and I was unable to view web pages. After thinking my switch had failed I realised it was the MSG laptop! As soon as I switched it off, the network recovered. After a week of testing, I find that MSG reception is fine for ~45 minutes then the PC locks totally. Today I have tried using a spare (more powerful) Thinkpad T23 laptop, PIII 1.2GHz, 1Gb RAM, 128Mb RAMDisk, and a totally clean install of Skystar drivers, EKU and Tellicast software. EXACTLY the same thing is happening - reception is fine for 30-45 minutes and then the machine locks totally. I'm thinking it can't be software related - I have run 4.4.0 Skystar drivers for weeks before the Tellicast upgrade and at least 2 or 3 weeks after the Tellicast upgrade. I can only think it must be the Skystar USB unit failing. Normally, my reception machine runs David's MSG Data Manager along with AVHRR Manager. I have tried running the machines with only the Tellicast software running i.e no processing and STILL the machine hangs so I guess that rules out any issue with the MSG Toolset software. Has anybody else suffered in a similar way or can anybody suggest if there are any log files that might give any more clues? It's not often I am at a loss as to what to do next but I am loathe to spend another 75 pounds or so on a new Skystar USB unit if that isn't the problem! Any comments/experiences would be appreciated. Jonathan

Peter I have no doubt this will be a very relevant issue. With somethingDouglas, Thank you for your response which is much as I expected. I do prefer the USB box which removes a major heat source from within the case and gives a good indication of data reception via the LED. I added a further 1024MB of DDR 400 memory to my receiving/processing machine this morning taking the total to 2048MB. My EKU account had MSG2 data added today data is flowing as from 0900UTC. operation type??

Hi everybody, I was wondering if I can use the MSG Data Manager from time to time when I bring raw data ( not gathering from using tellicast as a batch operation, but manually taking from our state of meteorology) and put them into the directory of source data??

Re: file edit for RAM disk

It seems that if the file size is too small, only the software update files are lost. Re: Skystar USB or PCI
Douglas Deans <dsdeans@...>
Having had a trouble free T-Systems upgrade I decided to install my PCI Regards, PeterPeter I have no doubt this will be a very relevant issue. With something between 15 and 20 additional channels from the EPS data when it starts, several with max rates more than that of our existing channels, throughputs will be well in excess of USB boxes capability. I would hope that Technisat may soon produce a USB 2.0 box as several other manufacturers are now doing (I believe). However if careful choice is made of the data actually wanted, perhaps it will be possible to keep throughput down. I would anticipate (looking at the Metop instrumentation) that much of that data will only be wanted by the most enthusiastic of amateur meteorologists ! Regards Douglas.

file edit for RAM disk
Lawrence <lawrence@...>
I am just checking the edit of my recv.ini file because I am unsure about the RAM disk operation. I recently increased the size to 59Mb and now I notice that the instructions (which are for a 24Mb RAM disk, say:
file-database-size - 24 576 000 Presumably this should (in my case) be edited to 59 576 000? Lawrence

Skystar USB or PCI
Peter Benney
Having had a trouble free T-Systems upgrade I decided to install my PCI Skystar 2 TV card replacing
a Sky2PC USB 1.1 box . The USB box supports an aggregate throughput of 8Mbps whereas the PCI has an aggregate throughput of 42 Mbps. I was wondering if this will be relevent considering the forthcoming data rates to be expected over EUMETCast. Regards, Peter

The eToken light is normally on. When it is accessed, the light is off for a blink of an eye. It will be accessed almost every 10 to 30 seconds when data is flowing. If it does not "blink off" for more than 2 minutes, you have Tellicast not running or RTE not installed correctly. See B1.3 at http://www.david-taylor.myby.co.uk/wxsat/atovs/EUMETCast-trouble-shooting-guide.html Greetings, Arne van Belle

Enzo,
I had some problems not related with met-sats in past days... Reverted to ramdisk "after" or "before" using registered version? I'm back in private, in italian, if I may be useful for a few minutes... If the system worked before installing the RAMdisk I suggest you carefully read over http://www.david-taylor.myby.co.uk/wxsat/atovs/RAMdisk.pdf Or revert to not using a RAM disk for a start. You have to do some basic debugging to narrow down the problem. The question is: do the files still come in ? or is MDM unable to find them ? You could try to find another user on the Italian MSG_1 list: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/msg_1/ that is willing to help you over the phone, as this is more efficient. Good Luck, Arne van Belle

Re: help
a_van_belle
Hello Enzo,
I guess the line: RECEIVED FILES LOCATION: Z:\receiving\data\ is incorrect and not matching with the location that Tellicast writes its data to. Look in your recv-channels.ini file for a line: target_directory= ...... These two lines must point to the same location. Greetings, Arne van Belle

Hello Alan,
Apart from the Update folder you can delete all files that remain in the Received folder. A "convenient" location is one that you can remember and is easy to type (just like the "press any key") For example: c:\TCupdate2006 Good luck, Arne van Belle --- In MSG-1@yahoogroups.com, ALAN GARD <gard@...> wrote: system, Win XP Home, not internet-connected. What constitutes a "convenient" location in this context, please?

New User??
serdar <serdarsurer81@...>
Hello All, I am a new user of MSG Data Manager (lets say I will be,
as soon as possible). I have got some questions about general management of the software and it would make me very happy if you can help me. First of all, I am not going to have the level 1.5 data by tellicast, our state of meteorology is going to send the files to the selected directory/folder of my receiving computer's harddisk via internet using the ftp connection that I will provide, they will send files as .rar format that each rar file is going to be approximately 90-100 mb. Then, I will write a converting program by Visual C#.Net that opens the rar files and puts their ingredients to another folder, then the msg data manager that is working on another computer which is connected to the receiving computer by network will use that second folder as the source of raw data and after converting to jpg send to a third folder which will contain the jpg's. And finally, I will write a querying program which will be used by my two instructors, the program will bring the selected jpg of having the wanted criteria. Here are my questions; 1)Do you see any susceptible or problematic stage on the system that I want to implement? 2)What is the best efficient connecting method of those computers to eachother and the querying computers that my instructors will use? Thank you for your attention, I will have some more questions of course :) Merci..

Preparing to Execute Eumetcast Update
ALAN GARD <gard@...>
Greetings All
Just hope this is the right forum - here goes. Running single-PC system, Win XP Home, not internet-connected. Planning to stick with just the one 0-deg. service from whatever MSG sat is providing it, no AVHRR. Navigating thro' Prog. Files/T-Systems/BusinessTV-IP/Received, besides the Update folder I didn't know was there, are: 9 MSG2_AVHRR files dating from 15 Feb, 34 MSG2_GOES12 files dating from 10 & 20 Feb, 78 MSG2_MPEF files from 19 & 20 Apr, Approx. 120 MSG2_MSG2 files from 19 & 20 Apr, 35 MSG2_MTSAT1R files from 20 Apr, Approx. 112 MSG2_Service files dating from 10 & 19 Apr. I can presumably just delete all these without harm, can I? The Update folder (I think dated 15 Apr) readme suggests I unpack [Licence.cd.v5] to a "convenient" location. What constitutes a "convenient" location in this context, please? Best wishes Alan
