Even if you un-install a program correctly using the control panel/add remove programs applet there is often a wealth of information left in the registry and I have known this to interfere on numerous occasions with a subsequent re-install. The only safe way is to edit the registry and find and remove all references to the program in question.

I had a series of problems - even got Dave to replace / repair the Skystar
card! When returned by Dave it worked immediately - however when I decide
to reinstall (with Tellique's software) it would only receive the
Announcement Channel. Douglas Dean's suggestion about adding the extra PIDs
for HRIT and LRIT sorted it out and it now seems to work fine. Probably
some Windows Registry screw up on the re-install routines.

Summary, there are faulty cards about, but don't rely on SkyStar /
Tellique's software either, especially if you have tried to re-install a
number of times. I fully endorse the view on a FAQ - collective experience
may well help the unfortunate "Timestep 3".

Just some quick notes on this discussion (have to work!):

Don't think there are many faulty cards, most problems are caused by
address conflicts with other cards. Although you might think that PCI
slots and XP solved the IRQ/address conflicts, this is totally not
true. All IRQ's are shared with the many onboard features of modern
mobo's.
Have installed 3 cards in 5 different PC's, had only minor problems
with one combination.
In Modern PC's IRQ's are shared up to 6 times and might not be
present on every PCI slot !
My advice:

1 If your OS/PC does not recognise the newly inserted Skystar at
first boot, you have to move the card to another slot !

2 Don't move the card to another slot once drivers are installed, or
de-install drivers first. This will prevent the "changed IP address"
problem as Windows just installs it as a second Skystar on a
different address!

3 The older Skystar rev. 2.3 does generate more heat that the new
version 2.6B, but both work fine for me (I have the rev 2.3 running
24 hours a day from March 22, even with the heatwave on my attic)

4 Additional cooling: Modern PC's do run very hot themselves. Most
case-manufacturers pay a lot attention to the frontpanel-design with
fancy buttons and lights but totally neglect that sufficient airflow
is mandatory. The addition of low-noise power supplies makes this
even worse !
Monitor your inside case temp, it should not reach 10 degrees over
room temp. If it does, you need an additional Case-fan (or two!).
Bear in mind that all parts that run hot (not warm) have a decreased
life !
If space allows, keep the slot below the Skystar empty and remove the
slot-coverplate, so cool air sweeps along the Skystar.
And finally: some members reported using the PC with open cover. In
some cases this could assist cooling, but in other cases it can
disrupt the designed airflow, making things worse ! Better place a
Case-fan to expel the warm air inside. Two or three fans in your PC,
running at low speed generate less noise compared to 1 fan running at
high speed.

Folks, this is all good stuff, but the topic is drifting away from
the MSG-1 remit of the group. Please keep it MSG-1 specific and not
general computer chit-chat.

Thanks,

Data loss?

David J Taylor GM8ARV 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🇪🇺

Is it just me, or did the data stop at around 13:55 UTC today? The
Admin messages which used to be sent every 15/30 minutes don't seem
to be arriving either.

(I am getting GTS messages, but I know not everyone gets those. So
the satellite data link seems OK, and there's nothing out of the
ordinary in the Tellique log).

Thanks,
David

Not been at the computer (out cutting grass) but you are right. It has
stopped half way through the 13.45 scan.

I believe you did, posting an e-mail on 03-09-03 which read -

and http://www.t-data.lu/ are more accurate links.  The USB version is
particularly worthwhile.

Dave,

Sorry, I somehow appear not to have seen this useful advice from you over the

MSG users equipment survey.

johnrigsec@...

All,

We are just over halfway in the planned trial period for MSG dissemination
via
EUMETCast over Hot Bird 6.
The C-Band trial period of EUMETCast is about to begin, though I suspect this
might be shorter owing to the experiences gained during the Ku-Band trials.

At the same time of course MSG-1 itself is undergoing commissioning as is the
MSG Ground Segment for this new all digital satellite.
Owing to the problem with one of MSG-1's SSPA's and the doubt over the
viability
of the remaining SSPA's EUMETSAT have had to adopt a brand new (for weather
satellites - and a pointer to the future(?)) mode of dissemination - DVB.

Quite a few of you are taking part in the EUMETCast trials and I know
EUMETSAT
are very grateful for the technical feedback you are providing.

A good example - if I may say so - where amateurs can be of assistance to the

professionals.

Coming up are a couple of new services added to the data stream which I
believe
we will not have access to and of course encryption will gradually be tested
from
around the end of September.

Reading rig-l and MSG-1 newsgroups and talking to several users at last
weekends
de Kunstmaan meeting in Holland [which was brilliant] it appears users are
'using'
computers of 'all shapes and sizes.'

I believe it would therefore be interesting and useful to get some feedback
as to
what you are using to receive Ku-Band EUMETCast.
Such as:

Dish size. [LNB's are all pretty much the same these days so not important.]
Card/USB Box - make and version.
Computer - CPU, Intel/Athlon - speed.
RAM.
HD capacity.
Graphics card - on board memory.

Two computer set up and its make-up?

And, very briefly, a list of any problems encountered.

Oh, and are you a RIG member?

If you would be good enough to spare a bit of time to forward this
information to me
please send it direct to me - johnrigsec@... and not post it to and clog
up the
newsgroups, I would be very grateful.

I will generate a document listing, I suspect, the diverse specs. of
equipment in use.

Regards,
John Tellick.
RIG secretary.

FSD ingest

Has anyone else got missing FSD after half way through the 9 am slots? I have been out all day and the computer has processed and animated HRIT data OK. Just wondering if it is my end, or whether Isabel is to blame?

Its not your end James, I haven't received any either. I was hoping for

Here also all foriegn data is missing as from 9:00 UTC.

Goes East did send out the 9 and 12 o'clock images. So it is really a
dissemination issue.

Thanks for the confirmation from yourself and other group members.

I can receive GOES 12 APT here in the UK - and I can see the 'eye' right on the coast - a pity the digital images are not available at this time.

MSG data outage

David J Taylor GM8ARV 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🇪🇺

I stopped receiving MSG-1 data at 04:54 UTC this morning, but ATOVS
data is still flowing. GTS messages also stopped after 04:52 UTC.
No Foreign Satellite Data since 0900 UTC yesterday (annoying as
Isabel would have been interesting to observe as it made landfall).

David

Re: MSG data outage

David J Taylor GM8ARV 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🇪🇺

Data flow restored around 06:00 UTC.

MDD Reader - new experimental program

David J Taylor GM8ARV 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🇪🇺

For those of you who are getting the GTS files from MSG-1, there is
a new experimental program to read either a single GTS file or an
entire folder full and extract the multiple MDD messages contained
therein. You can download the program from the Download section of
the MSG Data Manager page:

http://www.satsignal.net => Satellite Tools, MSG Data Manager

If you are not receiving GTS files there is no point in looking at
this software. If you _are_ getting GTS files, I do have an update
to the MSG Data Manager which will move these files from the
Receiver PC to the Processing PC.

Cheers,
David

PCI card overheating question

Paul Telco <paul@...>

Hello all,

Last week my MSG receiver PC died. I assumed that it was due to the Technisat PCI card overheating and switched off. On Sunday morning I fitted an extra five fans to the PC, two directly alongside the PCI card and three to draw cold air through the front of the case.

The PC was still crashing so I reinstalled Win 98 (I don't want to run XP on this machine and It had worked faultlessly before last week). Still Crashes.

At about 14:00 I restarted the computer and software and it all started working. On reading the MSG-1 newsgroup I found lots of other people were having the same problem (32 related messages in 3 days) and It seems to me that we all got our systems back at about the same time.

So the question I have is this: were the problems all related to overheating? It had been hot before without such a lot of failure. Or were the problems to do with the server upgrades announced by Eumetsat earlier?

My system is now working with almost complete reliability. Maybe because it has much improved ventilation. Is anyone still having overheating problems which started last week? Did anyone else notice this pattern of events?

I have not installed any updates to software .

Apologies if this is too far fetched or off topic,

Paul
