David's image of the UK - recommended in response to a request for example
images - was captured and processed in July. London, Birmingham and the Manchester conurabation were visible in this image. Is this a normal image, routinely achievable in summer illumination, or was it in any sense a one-off? I ask this because I have a similar HPRT image from around the same time and although the latter is better (Chester is visible), the MSG-1 image bears comparison with it. It will be great if we can normally expect to acquire images like this in the summer - when the sky is clear that is! Yes, I work in a school, as an IT Manager not a teacher, and I am currently trying to enthuse them in MSG-1. To do this I have made a simple web page that will produce a choice of four animations full screen in IE6. This available on the school intranet only but if you want the code I can send you the complete page off list.

All 15.00 UTC FSD just about in (GOES 10 completing) within an hour, and dare I say it no problems with Meteosat 5 since the bandwidth increase. Excellent and thanks Eumetsat. (and David of course !) This procedure will have the following impact on SEVIRI imaging. 06/01/04 from 08:30 until 11:15 there will be no SEVIRI data available. 06/01/04 from 11:15 until 09/01/04 12:00 only VIS channels will available with degraded quality. 09/01/04 from 12:00 until 09/01/04 13:15 no SEVIRI data available. 09/01/04 from 13:15 until 13/01/04 09:00 SEVIRI images available with degraded quality 13/01/04 09:00 Nominal SEVIRI images resume The third last line indicates that from 13.15, 09.01.04 SEVIRI images available with degraded quality. Two lines before that makes it clear that from 06/01/04 (11.15) until 09/01/04 (12.00) only VIS available, and the 75 mins gap between the two, all off, in preparation for start of all data. Lawrence, I presume that until the detectors and the rest of the satellite stabilise at normal operating temperatures, the thermal calibration won't be correct. Plus presumably there may be gases around the satellite etc. Perhaps Eumetsat need to confirm the calibration as well? Cheers, David

In fact as David pointed out it ran about 1 hour late. 13th January (09.00) before calibration can be guaranteed. As expected some images (see ch 09 for example) are not nominal at the moment.... but great to see IR back particularly for this time of the year at northern latitudes. Regards Douglas.

Dear Lucamy mistake probably, it must be RH 8. That PC is the only one I ever installed RH on, since I normally use Debian, hence the confusion in the RH version, apologize. I have tryed to install LinuxTV 1.0.1 on RH 9.0 but it does notoh well, it really depends on your familiarity with recompiling Linux kernels and loadable modules. If you are not too comfortable in doing that, I am afraid this will be a pretty complicated job for you. Make sure that the kernel you are running on your RH is the correct version, and likewise for the gcc compiler. I did not have to recompile the kernel when I did my tests. thanks againBye, Luca

Re: Eumetcast update - you may want to restart your Tellique client software
Thanks for a very informative update and well spotted on thechannel 3 bandwidth. Perhaps that is the most important upgrade of all. I didn't spot it, to be honest, I was told.... I am noticing already with the new Tellique that the .fsy seems tobe staying much smaller. With the older software I regularly had 2 large files despite never having a problem with segment loss...still that's history now! Due to the Eumetsat changes, rather than the upgrade of the Tellique client. I have just received your original advice direct from EumetsatOPS. in a mail. I really must repeat that the service from Eumetsat OPS is superb. It was the result of some discussions I had with Eumetsat about a specific missing segment - just occasionally I dig into the log files and if one PC gets the segment OK, and the other failed, I try to understand why. Eumetsat have a very detailed understanding of the operation of the Tellique system resulting in the tip which I suggested passing on to this list. Superb service from Eumetsat, as you say. Cheers, David
