Subject: [MSG-1] Eclipse periods

Will MSG-1 have eclipse periods like other geostationary satellites,
when there is not enough power to keep the electronics fully
running? I am presuming so, but have seen no announcement as yet.
I also asusme that at some point there will be periods where the
imager will be switched off to avoid looking at the sun.

I see this will start soon on GOES and Meteosat 7.

Cheers,
David
Interesting point, David. There is nothing specific in any of the technical
documents (Particularly 07 and 08). MSG's power demand (600W) is 3 times
that of its predecessors but still has an increased life span of 7 years.
There is a reference to on-board batteries for eclipse purposes but I would
think that it is to ensure power for its own housekeeping etc. Having said
that there is no input/output dissemination now so the power requirements
must be less.
Will be interesting to see what happens.

Douglas.

MSG-1 and MET7 thoughts

Hi,

I was just wondering, since the direct downlink of the data from MSG-
1 will not be possible, what would prevent Eumetsat from positioning
MSG-1 close by 0 degrees, let's say 0.5E, and run the operational
service from that position?

Doing that would enable a longer transition from the analog MET7
broadcasts, which are received by a very large number of stations,
keeping MET7 at 0 degrees, while MET8 would already be operational
with almost the same coverage.

Of course I am only talking about technical matters, not taking into
consideration agreements for orbital slots and things like this.

Does anyone know how the transition from analog WEFAX to the new
format is handled? I would not be surprised to see quite a few
protests when MET7 will start to drift towards 10W...

Bye, Luca

Is it just me, or did everyone miss some complete HRIT scans on
those two days:

Aug 25
Scan: 1500 2100

Aug 26
Scan: 0300 0900 1500

Seems to be something awfully systematic in those numbers! By the
way you can get a report by selecting Tools, Missing segments report
with the MSG Data Manager.

Cheers,

Hello Luca

Meteosat 7 is not going to be moved. It will remain at 0 until at least
the end of 2005. MSG-1 will be moved to approx 3-4W, subject to final
Eumetsat Council approval. This is possible because there will be no
direct dissemination from MSG-1. and hence no co-interference.
At that new position images corrected to 0 (as they are now) will show less
interpolation than at present. Seems a good compromise.

Regards
Douglas.

David,

Sorry can't help with Aug 25, or 03.00 Aug 26th.
09.00 agreed and 15.00 (and others around that time) also agreed and
referred to in the 'News' message albeit somebody dated it 16/08/03 instead
of 26/08/03 !

Hope that helps a little.

Douglas.

Hmmm, I guess, Luca read the same information that I did yesterday: See

Ulrich,

true, but that page is also outdated because of the Power Amp problem
on MSG-1.

Good to know that what started as a personal thought will in the end
be Eumetsat's policy, with MET7 kept at 0 and MET8 close to 0 with
images rectified at 0, as mentioned by Douglas.

Unfortunately a lot of the info. in the RIG web pages is not kept up to date
and of course the MSG-1 situation has been very fluid. Indeed my
understanding from Eumetsat was that the Council meeting to which I referred
was to be held in June....still no confirmation. Probably no urgency for
the move until nearer the time that MSG-1 becomes the operational satellite
ie January 2004.
What I did not make clear in my last mail was that basically Meteosat 7 with
old PDUS/Wefax and Meteosat 8 (HRIT/LRIT) will overlap for at least 2 years
(maybe more) to allow everyone time to prepare for changeover.

Regards
Douglas.

Hi folks,
I just shut down my system to install Microsoft XP Service Pack 1, and
when I had finished, the tellicast client would not connect. Is anything
currently being transmitted? I got an email from ops saying that
interruptions would occur on 1 Sep 03, so perhaps the lack of connection is
due to that. Thanks for any advice.

Yes, data from the 11:45 UTC slot is coming down right now, both
LRIT and HRIT.

Check the IP address of the network card. A second reboot (power
off as well) may help.

Thanks to all who responded with suggestions. The network address was OK but
a cold reboot did the trick. This is the second time this has happened -
hopefully I'll remember next time!

The 1.0.0.9 version of the Animator is working fine - many thanks.

Best regards - Alan

Aggh - can't believe I posted with such atrocious spelling, especially in
