Modern and cheap meters are just fine. But having looked at several users
installations I can see the problem. I'll expand on this tomorrow.

digital alignment meters but they are several times more expensive.
If you can find the satellite by moving the dish, fine alignment

the quality/signal strength features that most receivers offer -
e.g. the
one on Sky or the one on the SkyStar2 card. Fine alignment using
the signal
quality or BER is essential - signal strength is far too crude a
measure to
work for digital signals. I don't know if Hotbird 6 has an analog
transponder.

Alan and Roger,

Theoretically there is no difference in a satmeter for Digital or
Analog satellites/transponders. Both transpondertypes emits huge
amounts of RF energy but with different modulation techniques.
The satmeter only detects this RF enegery.

But I did hear about poorly functioning satmeters, probably due to
inferior design. In some cases the build-in beeper takes up to much
current, affecting the meter readout.
In other cases the gain knob to pre-set the meter half way is not
functioning correctly, giving an all or nothing readout.

A modern satmeter should be able to cope with higher frequencies (up
to 2200 Mhz) and the addition of 22 KHz imposed on the powersupply.
Older types might not be able to handle this as they were designed
for max 1750 MHz and only 13/18 V DC supply.

As we do not use the high band for MSG, the 22 KHz signal from the
receiver will be off and 11096 MHz will be converted to 1346 Mhz, I
don't think you need a modern, digital satmeter.

By aligning with the signal quality readout however, you know you are
tuned to that transponder and not to all transponders together.
Note that BER reading is not available anymore on the new Skystar
card. And you do need patience as the readout is updated in second
intervals.

Greetings,
Arne van Belle

"EnablePMTUDiscovery"=dword:00000001 (= on)
"GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize"=dword:0000faf0 (= 64240 bytes)

As you see in the key these values do apply to all Tcpip services, so if
you have tweaked your network or internet connection, this can have a
reverse effect on the Skystar !
Arne,

Thanks for the above information. I have checked the settings on my RX PC and the values agree except as I suspected the Tcp Windows Size. I have now changed this to the default 64240 bytes.

I have now upgraded to TQ 2.3.1.

I had a problem getting my dish aligned; I'm in N Ireland so I've probably
got a similar signal to you. Rather than bring in the "professionals"
consider investing in Timestep's simple alignment meter. (If I remember
correctly about 20-25.) Assuming you can access your dish, simple hand
pressure on the horizontal and vertical axes will allow to get the alignment
spot on. Here, it's blowing a real gale at present and while my dish is at
the bottom of the mast I use for my QFH and sways a bit, signal strength
(normally 70%) is dropping to 59%, SNR drops from 10.9 to 9.2, but the BER
is unchanged at zero.

Just to report on an installation of the 2.3.1 version.

As one or two others have reported it comes with the e-token software.

The first installation attempt went OK until the last part, and I admit
I failed to note the error message, but it was something like 'couldn't
create the user key'. Checking the rec.ini showed an absence of my user
name and password. Manually entering them didn't produce a working
programme, so I UN-installed and then re-installed and this time it went
OK. It then said the computer needed to be re-booted - accepted it and
on re-starting the computer froze when the icons came up on the task
bar. Did a complete shutdown and then cold re-boot and everything was
fine, and was again this morning.

I have kept the previous installation as they now install in different
directories. One small thing I notice is that hovering the mouse over
the pink 'T' icon shows a 'connecting' statement, whereas the previous
one showed 'connected' when pink. Not sure what others have encountered.
But the data is streaming in and I'm not getting missing segments ATM
from the 4 HRIT channels I usually receive. So seems not to be any less
accurate that way.

Delivery was by DHL the next day from it being sent out. Amazing!

My grateful thanks to the Eumetsat staff.

That's interesting James. Thanks for the talk through. My version
pre-dates MSG with an additional download (from Eumetsat) to deal with the
larger bandwidth of MSG (than EARS)...so it is pretty old. Having said
that I have not had any trouble with it at all so I have no intention to
update. Presumably when the e-tokens are sent (after we have received our
licences) the necessary software for that will be provided separately.

Regards
Douglas.

Peter, thanks for the suggestion - I have retuned in accordance with your
advice, but it seems to have made no difference.
I recently stiffened the mounting for my dish, so I wonder if recent wind could
actually have moved the dish itself on the pole? Will have to investigate
further over the weekend.
Thanks again
Robert

Changing the parameter "file_database_size"

Changing the parameter "file_database_size" might cause a hangup of the software.
The following steps should be performed for changing this parameter smoothly:

a) Stop the tqrecv-client.
b) Change the parameter "file_database_size" in the recv.ini
(If you omit this parameter, tqrecv uses a default value of 250MB).
c) Delete the directory "receiving" (internal file-database).
d) Start the tqrecv-client.

Has anyone else noticed the dreadful quality of channel 5 in the last few
days (at least).
I normally only take 2,4,5,9 and 12 but have now switched to all HRIT to
check others.
It looks like slippage on alternate scans lines and indeed reminds me of
the
fault that Meteor 3-5 had for so long except in this case it is across the
whole image. (and obviously for completely different reasons !).
Other channels now coming in, but it does appear the quality issue is only
with channel 5.
