Just did an animation on 50 full res. HRV images in PNG format (total 802 Mb data).
Using 1280x960 format, Polar stereographic Projection it took about 10 minutes.

Used GSS404408 on P4@2.4 GHz with 1 Gb ram and W2K Sp3.

If you send me further details, day/slots and and your jobsetup I can test if some unforeseen combination could cause a problem.

Although Eumetsat does warn for data loss when activating setup4pc
(Have read it somewhere, was it in TD15 ?) I have never lost segments
this way. I switch to Status frequently to watch signal level and
also had it opened for at least a week during the solar outages. But
Ian is correct in leaving the receive PC alone, because I did loose
lots of segments just opening Explorer on the received folder !
Running only a Celeron 800 Mhz with 256 Mb ram this is something I
can live with.
Apart from a failing harddisc two weeks ago, this PC has been powered
on from May and is only rebooted for updates or at power losses.

Did improve on cooling a bit by adding a case fan and removed the
slotcoverplate below the old version Skystar.

I do run a "lean" W2K Pro SP3, have not applied any security patch
and had to disable the scardsvr process before I upgraded to TQ231.
Have no firewall, virus scanner, time sync or defrag running on this
PC and did set powermanagement to "full on".


David try to borrow/get a satsignal meter to check if you do not
suffer from fast signal fluctuations at windy conditions. Or borrow
an old analog sat receiver with a signal meter output. This could
convince the installer to check the alignment and fixing of your dish.

I had a problem getting my dish aligned; I'm in N Ireland so I've probably
got a similar signal to you. Rather than bring in the "professionals"
consider investing in Timestep's simple alignment meter. (If I remember
correctly about £20-£25.) Assuming you can access your dish, simple hand
pressure on the horizontal and vertical axes will allow to get the alignment
spot on. Here, it's blowing a real gale at present and while my dish is at
the bottom of the mast I use for my QFH and sways a bit, signal strength
(normally 70%) is dropping to 59%, SNR drops from 10.9 to 9.2, but the BER
is unchanged at zero.

I get the same type of problem if I try to animate using 15min time slots
rather than 30 mins (even though the images are on a 15min schedule. In
GSS4-Options-Job Setup-Animation try setting the "Take Picture Every " to 30
mins.

|Not 100% sure what you mean Maik, but they are used exactly
|'as saved' from
|MSG DM.
|For HRV, to save process time, I normally use the HRV 12n.
|Typically (about midday) the file is about 6MB whereas my full
|12 channel
|file size is about 22Mb.

Well, that's interesting - perhaps we are starting to get somewhere?

However, I've been running Setup4PC, Transponder Status display, all
day today (last reboot was 19:30 last night) and since 10:15 this
morning I have had zero missing segments! Today's problems I can
relate to the wind. But if I start getting unexplained missing
segments I will certainly stop Setup4PC.

(Also running Tellique 2.3.1, Windows Server 2000, older DVB card).

I take channels 2-4-5-9-12 at the moment and in that very short period I
lost 3 segments. Even with this fairly low computer spec. I have never ever
had segment loss ( apart from Eumetsat problems ). I am running a more
recent version of the Tellique software and the newer card. It would appear
that Douglas is spot on -- if you attempt to even look at the status on the
card with data coming in you are going to get segment loss -- certainly that
is my findings.

Try a few days without the statistics screen, David..... might be
interesting. All I have is the green 'signal ok' icon in the taskbar. If I
want to have a look at signal level I do it after I have shutdown Tellique.
The only other issue (don't know whether it is relevant or not) is that I
have the original Tellique software (pre MSG).
I do hope you will get this resolved. If anyone deserves hassle free
reception, it's you David !

Hello David,

I use a 1m dish here in London and get 80%+ and a SNR of 12+. I would
have thought that so long as your getting a fairly solid signal this
wouldn't be causing lost segments. I have to say though that apart
from the ones reported by others I don't seem to miss any, the dish
does have the mother of a bracket on it though and doesn't move a bit
even in the highest winds.

grouping was perhaps spreading the loss more equally across all

I don't expect any file grouping to be constant, by the way. I
(again) guess that there is a data stream and that all files of a
certain priority will be packaged for transmission in some sort
of "best fit to available packets" fashion. I don't know if the
IMPF software processes files in a strict channel order, or if there
are parallel processing tasks so the channel order for a particular
segment is random. I should study the log files, shouldn't I?

The Sky star card is in the computer in the garage!!
.. and so perhaps is subject to a larger temperature variation than
a "domestic" computer might expect to encounter?

.. and I found that the maximum solar outage did not correspond
_precisely_ with the WXtrack predictions. It does all point to a
slight alignment error, but how to convince the professional
installers of this? How many months guarantee you would expect on
dish alignment in any case? I would love to get the "professional
installers" out again, but am worried that they check the dish, and
say "It looks OK to us, that will be £50, please!"

be used. You could probably pick up an old Sky analogue 80cm dish for next
to nothing, although they were more in use in Scotland as most of England
used 60cm dishes in the analogue days.

That's a very fair point. Very slight movement in a badly aligned dish will
lose signal rapidly. There is no better illustration of this than the
recent move by BBC to Astra 2D with its much tighter spot beam allowing the
BBC to go FTA. Thousands of Sky customers particularly at the extremes of
the beam lost the BBC channels and it is reckoned that most of the problems
were down to badly aligned dishes. Shoddy work by professionals.
