Subject: [MSG-1] Using EUMETCast with no eToken - any success?

Is anyone using EUMETCast without an eToken right now? I'm setting up a

new system, and I followed the instructions in the EUMETCast
trouble-shooting guide but while I'm getting announcement channel data,
I'm not getting anything else. Supposedly, I should be getting MPEF
data
every 15 minutes.

Ideas?

Thanks,
David

I'm not sure that you can save the file anywhere else, but the file isn't being sent until Tuesday, May 16. The zipped version of the file is 6.6MB.

My own tests so far suggest that the FSY file file may increase in size from a typical 8MB with the V2.4.0a TelliCast software to 13MB or more with the V2.4.4 B software, so if you have the FSY file on a RAMdisk you may want to review the size of the RAMdisk.

Cheers,
David

Hi,
ramdisk is finally fitted on my PC... it's 256M wide, so I use it also for
some scheduled jpeg and avi.
"Solid state disk" board ( the one posted by Jakub ) costs something like
120-150 euro, without memory...
4x1GB adds 300 euro more or less... totally 200 euro with only 1GB... a
little expensive...

Indeed Ulrich, a RAMdisk is much faster than disk.
As a direct result datatransfer does require less CPU time.

Tellicast takes less than 5% CPU on my P3@1GHz.
So the rest is availabe for decoding the raw data or receiving the new
data streams in the near future.

I am experimenting with a 200 Mb ramdisk too to store the Animator
files and Tellicast.
Unfortunately there is no way to make sure that too much ramdisk space
is taken up by Animator.
An alternative could be creating a separate ramdisc to store Tellicast
data only but the ARsoft supports only 1 ramdisc.

Let's hope the "solid state discs" with 4 Gb capacity will become
available for an affordable price soon.

Greetings,
Arne van Belle

Tellicast sw update

Giuseppe Cico

Hi all,
I'm sure I'm missing something in this sunny morning, but on Eumetsat's site
there are this informations:

PID: 300 (HotBird-6 & AtlanticBird-3)
PID: 1922 (NSS806)
Channel: EUMETSAT Data Channel 2
target directory: sub-directory "updates" below the target directory for
Channel 2 (e.g. received/updates)
file names:
Licence_cd_v5.exe (Windows)
Licence_cd_v5.tar.gz (Linux)
Readme_cd_v5.txt (Instructions)

Channel 2 / PID 300 is the HRIT one, if I don' t get wrong, and my
"recv-channels.ini" contains directives to save Channel 2 on Ramdisk ( my
R:\Eumetsat\received\data ).
How can I save exe file to another directory? maybe sent file is
"updates\Licence_cd_v5.exe" so it's directly saved at right place?... who
knows...
Anyway it's not really a problem because if I find this file in
"R:\Eumetsat\received\data", MDM doesn't erase it, so I'll get and save...
it's just a curiosity about configuration files, maybe useful in the
future...

Currently cfg file looks like this ( R: is ramdisk , E: is physical ), and
is ready for MSG-2 trial

[EUMETSAT Data Channel 1]
...
[EUMETSAT Data Channel 2]
temp_directory=R:\Eumetsat\received\temp

Giuseppe,

Yes, you will certainly get more traffic!

The beta test version of the TelliCast V2.4.4 B client software was sent
out to manufacturers on May 02, and I've been running it without problems
on my two systems here, for 9 days on the backup system, and for 4 hours
on the main system without problems so far.

It's a simple in-place update, although the new eToken software does
require a reboot. If you want, you can do a clean install instead.

Ciao,
David

xrit2pic 2006.05

R. Alblas

Release 2006.05 of xrit2pic is now available:

http://www.alblas.demon.nl/wsat/software/soft_msg.html

You can find here also bzip2, needed for AVHRR.
For Windows there is also a new installer; which takes care of
installing bzip2.exe, if needed.

AVHRR:
- Built-in default colour mapping (RGB=124)
- Conversion to rah format, readable by my wsat (HRPT) software
and HrptReader of David Taylor

Archive:
- The archive directory may be defined independently from the received
dir.
This may be used as an interface between MSG Data Manager and xrit2pic

(better than using xrit2pic's 'received' dir for this purpose).
In this way xrit2pic can load the jpeg files, and then process them
the same way as raw data:
generate Anaglyphs, movies, high resolution false colour pics etc.

- Prepared for MSG-2

- Many other enhancements; see the release notes:

Nigel,

The parallel running should give a chance for EUMETSAT and software developers to sort out any problems, so that nearer the time the service goes operational there can be a well-proven set of instructions for user as to how change over with minimum data loss. As there are no new channels or better resolution data, and as the data could be interrupted at any time without warning, and indeed /will/ be interrupted for decontamination, I would not advise anyone to "start changing their system" unless they are keen experimenters. It might also be wise to wait and see if any problems are reported with the new TelliCast Client software, and its best working parameters are known.

In contrast, of course, the AVHRR trials are providing us with exciting new HRPT data, and can be run in parallel with your existing reception with no interference or disruption.

Cheers,
David

Folks,
Unless you have a real need to use MSG-2 data, I would
suggest that you hold off getting the data until later
on in the trial. The data will be identical in
resolution and quality to that from the existing
Meteosat-8 satellite, so you will not get anything
extra from taking the additional parallel data (other
than the increased possibility of missing segments!).

Robert,

If I recall correctly, at sub-satellite point, in resolution order:

Met5/6/7: thermal & WV channel: ~4.5 km resolution

MSG-1: visible & thermal channels 1..11 - 3 km resolution

Met5/6/7: visible channel: ~2.2 km resolution

MSG-1: high-resolution visible (HRV) channel 12 - 1 km resolution

(Doubtless someone has more accurate Met-5/6/7 series information.)

Cheers,
David

Doouglas (and others) where/how do we find out if our equipment is up to
the two data streams in parallel?
From the EUMETSAT web site it looks as if the main advantage of -2 is the
higher resolution in the visible?

Robert

I guess it will just be a case of trying it and seeing if we lose sectors.
It is 2 new (temporary) channels so that gives us the option to direct the
raw data to another 'received' folder. Perhaps process it at another
time.

I am a bit puzzled at you remark re the higher resolution visible. I
would
expect it to be identical to MSG-1 (other than it's location...fine tuning
etc.). Where did you read this, Robert.

Regards
Douglas.

has John taken the right route I am wondering?

James,

I am using this version at the moment and everything is ending up
where it should.
On the 15th?....well we'll wait and see.
As I said, I want to see how my setup copes with it...and to see how
the MSG-2 data compares. The physical disk might well be a bit on
the slow side.
If MSG-2 is producing essentially the same material then there is no
point in collecting both MSG-1 and MSG-2 on a permanent basis.
I suppose it won't be too long before all the AVHRR stations are on
line; and then there's MetOp...so I hope I'll discover how near the
limit I am.

Cheers
John
The duplication of MSG-1 and MSG-2 data is purely for the trial period.
This will cease by the latest at the end of July (and probably before) as
Meteosat 9 then becomes operational on 1st August at 0.
Decontamination and re-location will be carried out over July.

Regards
Douglas.

Re: receiving PC configuration - MSG & AVHRR

2GB ram should be more than enough to receive and decode all data on a
single PC. Currently I still run receive and decode on a 1 Ghz P3 with
only 512 Mb ram. 25 Mb is used for Ramdisk to store the tellicast
database. In future (only if you want to take the METOP data) you
should be prepared to enlarge the ramdisk to at least 60 Mb.

My present, yet preliminary receiver PC has a 500 MHz CPU, a 40 GB
HD, ynd 768 MB of RAM. That does the trick: I separated 104 MB as a
RAM disk and put not only the 'receiving', but also the 'received'
volumes there. MSG Datamanager and AVHRR manager fetch their
data from that RAM disk, thus lowering the physical stress and time
consumption when the files are built on both ends.
I still can run MSGAnimator and some other stuff on that machine
without losing segments. Only replaying animations is not that eye-
candy-like due to the interruptions when new data come in.

The next step here, mainly due to the limitation by too few PCI
slots on
that old mainboard, will be the change to an 800 MHz Athlon and a 250
GB SATA disk. That will hold enough stuff for extended animations.

As long as EumetSat does not rent a second transponder on Hotbird, I
guess that scale of machine will do. Of course this does not mean
that I
don't fancy a faster toybox...

Cheers,
U.
