Hi Ernst

Thanks very much for all your efforts

I have spent all day today re-installing Windows to a version that will work with BDAData ready for my 6909X arriving on Monday

Will try the new kit at some stage

Ian,

no problem. Two words for the same thing. Before Windows with no graphics everybody used the term directory. The name folder appeared with these icons that unfortunately hide what's behind.

Open your Downloads Folder with the Windows Explorer and look what you have there as files.

Then open this dreadful CMD black "DOS" window, left click in the black to get the "focus", at the prompt > type cd Downloads, press Enter, you are in your folder Dowloads.
Your prompt will look something like C:\Users\ian\Downloads >. It's a nested structure. Type dir and press Enter. You'll see the same files as before one file name per line.

Good luck
Ernst

All,
Don’t hesitate and follow the HowTo that Ernst has made available. It is seriously easy to follow and implement, just as is the case with David’s suite of programs, and it brings direct result to your screen. Apart from widening the possibilities to work with the current data, a great advantage is that it opens up a road into the future. The people behind Pytroll/Satpy are continuously expanding the scope of work and improving on what already exists. It is for most people the only way to smoothly transition to MTG and Sentinel 5 onwards without having to spend big money.
So, take a first dip into this fresh water!

I echo your words Ferdinand.
However just one question if I may.
Since succeeding with V1, apart from changing/developing scripts etc., I have not updated anything.
Presumably I now need to start again with a new update of Miniconda and Pytroll. That seems to me to be a complete start from scratch. I question the benefits when the arrangement I have at the moment seems to handle all my needs admirably. I am just not sure what the benefits are and if they outweigh all the additional work.

Best regards,
Douglas.

I’ll comment later after having gone through it all.

Dear Members

Here comes the Pytroll/Satpy EUMETCast Windows Starter Kit V3.0 (YES 3.0). It should be "Childs Play" to get it working.
I have double checked all the scripts on my Windows 10 Pro 64Bit PC that got the files readonly from a SAMBA share Z:.

My definition of "Childs Play" remains the same as for V1.0:

 0) You know that you have Windows 10 64Bit
 1) You are not completely new to EUMETCast
 2) You read and follow the HOWTO inside (RTFM)
 3) You know where you find your satellite files

All scripts have been developt under Debian 10 GNU/Linux. An almost identical Starter Kit for this OS will follow soon.

Have fun
Ernst

Ferdinand,

thanks for the nice words. I hope indeed that the Club will grow to a size where Windows members can help each other. Don't forgent that we can be part
of an ongoing development of something huge. We will from time to time run into minor problems or bugs and must accept that these are often not the topmost
priorities of the main developers. As an example of such a SatPy bug the coast and grid lines west of London are sometimes missing in 'omerc_bb' areas.

Another problem may arise if your files are not the compressed way I use them due to my 2 PC setup. But Hartmut has already shown that with a minimum
Python such problems can be resolved quite quickly. The possibilities how the user can configure the outcome of *his* pictures are certainly unprecedented.

Have fun,
Ernst

Generally "F-connector", but I have seen cable size variants so if I was being very fussy I would order the connectors from the cable supplier.

Ernst,

Yes you are right. The environment variable does correctly point to where it should, but I had replaced the areas.yaml with my own version, containing many personal additions. I didn’t realize that you had added new areas.

AFAIK I added 'hawaii' to the areas.yaml file distributed with V 3.0. Your area_extent is somewhat larger than mine. And the 'lat_ts' might not be necessary.
There is a similar case with 'japan' for Himawary-8. Does your environment variable not point to the new areas.yaml ?

Hello Hartmut,

Happy New Year - hoffentlich!?

Yes, I had to replace my original SR1 power supply last year and purchased 2 'higher power' mains adapters.

I think the problem is - as the receiver is working properly - it's the third party Controller software which already has anomalies (this freezing being a new one) which Ayecka won't do anything about, being third party, and the receiver is well out of guarantee - and still going strong.

Best wishes,
John.

Hello All,

During the recent run of cold fairly constant rainy grey weather, my SNR has been 'lower than normal.'
I did try re-aligning my dish a couple of times but to no avail.

Since the rain stopped this week, though the weather remained cold and grey most days, things dried out and my SNR went up to 'where it should be.'
I'm now convinced the ever growing next door neighbours fir tree is again on the edge of Eutelsat 10-A's position.
The almost constant rain causing the wet branches to sag in my dish's line of sight of the satellite.

Having now had a 'usual' signal all week - but been busy on my day to day computer at the same time, I only glanced at the SR1 Controller readout occasionally.
I thought my SNR is remarkably steady these days at 13.4 dB.
Usually there is some variation.

Then I noticed the Traffic meter wasn't moving.
Tellicast showed BS and HVS-1 data was actually flowing correctly and Telnet showed that my SNR was actually 13.5 dB with BS link margin 7.6 dB and HVS-1 link margin 4.2 dB.

Some will recall that my SR1 Controller quite regularly shows a high 'negative figure' of Traffic with the dial at 0 for around 5 seconds before resetting .
A problem know to EUMESAT and Ayecka as I informed them.

Closing and reopening SR1 controller fixed 'its freezing' and Traffic flow is indicated again.

New Year's resolution - apart from avoiding Coronavirus - kill the fir tree.

Regards,
John Tellick.

Re: OLCI ERR and OLCI EFR

geojohnt@...

David,

That was an interesting link.
I hadn't thought about using silicone grease.
I ordered some F connector boots last autumn and they were 'too small.'
I had to cut a 'split' in them to fit over the F connector - thus exposing the cable entry on one side of the boot.
Not good.

I usually use self amalgamating tape which works well till you need to undo/get to, the connector/cable.
Can alter your dish alignment as you fumble around..

If Philip meant 'what cable should I use.' then CT100 is the 'satellite TV standard cable.'
There is also RG6 - but I don't know anything about this.

CT100 comes in 'silver' aluminium(?) braid and foil or copper braid and foil versions.
I have used both and think copper braided and foil cable is 'better/preferable.'

Regards,
John.

Ernst,

I suppose you included ‘hawaii’ in your sample script goes17.py as a training example. Added a quick area definition to areas.yaml in the pppconfig and got the attached .

In case of interest, I added:

-------

hawaii:

  description: hawaii

  projection:

    proj: stere

    ellps: WGS84

    lat_0: 20.50

    lon_0: -157.4

    lat_ts: 20.5

  shape:

    height: 1600

    width: 2844

  area_extent:

    lower_left_xy: [-800000.0, -450000.0]

    upper_right_xy: [800000.0, 450000.0]

------
