David,

country outlines are wrong for MSG-4 and MSG-RSS with the new beta.

Cheers,
Thorsten
=============================

Thanks for the report, Thorsten. You see why I didn't want to go down this route! Fixed in beta 1156 just uploaded, and the temperature under the cursor should be fixed as well.

I haven't looked at the World View yet. Any other issues awaited.

Cheers,
David

Re: Goes-15

David,

Whatever the name for it (double, blurry or fuzzy) starting 00:00 UTC it disappeared and all seems well at the edges. This does not, however, alter the desire to have Goes-17 taking over as soon as possible.
Btw, I read that there are plans to use Goes-15 IR in tandem during the 'hot' periods in which the Goes-17 IR channels are affected, so there might be less missing thermal than expected.
There is a nice read here http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/29874 and an informative power point presentation at:
https://www.ssec.wisc.edu/~tims/pptx/ABI_AQ_2018_Schmit_nearFinal.pptx

Cheers,
Ferdinand
===============================

Thanks for the link to the presentation, Ferdinand. It seems that they are proposing exactly what I suggested, i.e. that GOES-15 (or whatever) temperatures would be used to fill-in data missing or unreliable from GOES-17, and added directly to the GOES-17 data stream.

I had envisaged having to write my own software to rescale GOES-15 to GOES-17, judge the comparative quality, and fill in the bits as appropriate. That might all be done for us, and in the GOES-17 data stream.

Cheers,
David

File format GOES-15 ...

Hugo

Hi,

The format of the GOES-15 file in Data Channel 3 and 4 are no longer compressed (format is a binary dump)
Does anybody knows when this change happened ? Was there a message from Eumetsat ?
Kind regards,

Hugo

Nothing seen here Hugo and outwith my area of expertise but the file name was changed to include 128 instead of 135 (° W) at 15.00 on 5th November. Eumetsat had planned this and announced it in their Weekly Operations Schedules.

Douglas.

The GOES 15 data country outlines are incorrect with Animator, but I appreciate that it is probably not worth the effort to have this fixed with hopefully GOES-17 coming fairly soon.

Ian.

Thanks for the update David.

I switched computers late last night( have been using my backup computer for a few days ) but have just found that GOES-15 data is not being processed although using the latest DM beta. Will need to investigate and resolve before I can test Animator.

Thanks again.
Ian.

MapToGeo

Ferdinand Valk

David,

I see two issues:

1) With the new location of Goes-15 the background mapping needs to be
changed as well. Will it be possible for you to include the new mapping into
MapToGeo?

2) Another thing that I noticed is that the background mapping of Goes-17
does not correspond to the boundaries. Although most of the US/LatAm is
accurately mapped, the western coast is quite off (as is the less important
eastern edge of the image at Africa). See attached image.

I think that issue 1 is at the base of the inconsistency I see in the World
View of GeoSatSignal (1156).

Cheers,
Ferdinand

Yes, but obviously not tested on real (or simulated) data, so perhaps a minor update?

=====================================

Ferdinand,

1. Done, I hope.

2. Caused by the non-WMO mapping which the Americans are using for GOES-16/17. Whilst I didn't check it, that should have been fixed as well (simply by recompiling the program with the updated mapping routine).

I've not yet looked at the change of GOES-W in the GeoSatSignal World View. Please remind me if it's not done in a couple of days. Other (good) things are quite busy at the moment!

Re: tc-recv-client

Robert Moore

I was wondering if my system was becoming overloaded. So, I have set TrimTree on receiver PC to run every six hours, deleting BAS files older than 1 day and HVS-1 files older than six hours.

On processing PC:

Two red icons on the receiver task bar at 1458 and all reception stopped. This also enable me to see how far behind I was: last RSS image 1415, METOP-A 1225, GEOS-16 1215, HRIT 1445 (that one was OK).

Have just restarted (1739) BAS and HVS-1 – two red icons.

David,

Try as I might I can't get the proper remap out of MapToGeo for Goes-15. The
generated background-msg1-goes_w.bmp is totally off.
Just to make sure:
- using v2.0.5.54, registered version
- opening plate carree full world image
- Remap to MSG1-GOES_W
- Save to GeoSatSignal directory as background-msg1-goes_w.bmp (Old version
previously deleted)

Unless my seniority plays tricks on me, the remap is centered far west of
the intended location.
I also do not see a change in the non-WMO mapping for Goes-17.

I really hope it is something simple.

Cheers,
Ferdinand

All else having failed I removed the EKU, blew it to remove any dust, re-seated it in its socket and rebooted the receiver PC. So far so good - normal reception resumed.
