Re: conversion of Himawari data to netcdf format?

Simon Proud <simon.proud@...>

Hi David,
I checked and it looks like the Eumetcast data is HRIT, yes. Pytroll has a
separate branch to add Himawari support, so you may need to manually add
that. They have a very active support group on google.

As an alternative, if you subscribe to the p-tree service (
http://www.eorc.jaxa.jp/ptree/registration_top.html ) you can access the
original Himawari data, which is full resolution and all channels
(Eumetcast data is reduced res + channel subset). The p-tree data is
available (possibly at reduced res) already in netCDF4 format and is also
available in HSD format, I can supply a conversion tool for that.

Cheers,
Simon

Subject: [MSG-1] HVS-2 tests - try two HVS-1 instead?

Folks,

An idea - has anyone set up one of the problem TBS cards to receive two
instances of HVS-1? We don't really know whether there's an issue with
transponder 2, or the 8PSK5/6 15000, or the TBS card, or even its
interface
to the PC, although the Ayecka SR1 works without a problem.

Would running two HVS-1 instances tell us whether the problem might be
resolved when the HVS-2 service starts with its full specification (the
same
as HVS-1 except perhaps no BS switching?).

Cheers,
David
=============================================================

David, HVS-2 does not work properly on its own which I think says
something.
Strangely I do not see the same results as you. If I run both
transponders on my TBS 6903 I have no lost packets on HVS-2 (a few lost
but recovered each hour). No losses on HVS-1 or BS.
I do see some tmp folders due to the announcement channel dropout on
HVS-2 (green BDADataEx icon).
I cannot test the SR1 as I have losses on all HVS services with it.
By the way I have 2 inputs on my TBS 6903 (dual LNB). Not sure if the
single input changes anything but worth mentioning.

I don't think it is possible to run the same transponder on both inputs.
I tied HVS-1 on one input and BS on the other with weird results.
May be the 2 instances of BDADataEx are not geared up for that.

Regards,
Douglas.

Hi David,
What format is eumetcast himawari data? Is it HSD (I.e native) or something 'eumetcastified' (I.e hrit).

If the former, I have a home brewed tool for that, happy to share. If the latter, I'd recommend pytroll.

Re: David's Guide to EUMETCastView in Geo Quarterly

Les Hamilton

Hugo, you should not feel guilty at all.

Our experience in GEO is that the best guides to using software come from the users rather than the program authors. And I agree: you do sufficient service to the WXSAT community by continually updating and improving your work, and making it available free of charge.

Many GEO members use your software, and it is their experiences with it that are important: the problems and difficulties they encounter, and how they solve them.

GEO was set up as a group within which members would share their experiences to help each other. Sadly, the 'sharing' is becoming less and less obvious as many now seem only interested in themselves these days.

David's Guide to EUMETCastView in Geo Quarterly

Hugo

Hi all,

I want to thank David Taylor for writing a starter guide for the EumetCastView program in geoq53. I just downloaded the pdf and read the review. I feel a bit guilty after the call from Les Hamilton to write such an article. My only excuse is that writing a program such as EUMETCastView ( about 78000 C++ lines ) takes a lot of time and there are only 24 hours in a day :) . Because I wouldn't spend 12 hours a day before my computer writing code, I am also building an airplane (RV-9) to get some physical exercise, and this also takes a lot of my time.
I realize that a more detailed user manual should be written. My website hvanruys.github.io is updated just to version 1.1.6. Software writing ( and documenting it ! ) is a very labor intensive undertaking ...
In the future I shall update my website more frequently when new features are available.

Kind regards,

Hugo

Re: HVS-2 UpLink fixed?

Ernst Lobsiger

Hugo,

The TBS-5927 has the same advanced tuner and demodulator chips as the current "professional" PCIe cards TBS-6903/08. But it has 1 LNB entry only and it seems the Cypress FX2 USB-2.0 controller limits reception to 1 transponder only (see message 24195). What we should have as OS independant solution is an Ayecka SR2 using the current ST DVB chips (and working firmware) or an USB-box that can handle 2 transponders 16APSK (with working firware and working drivers for Windows and GNU/Linux). USB 2.0 is rated 480Mbps, so this should still work. No idea if someone is working on such a device. It's a wish list for Santaclaus 2018 ..

Cheers,
Ernst

Michele,

Would Windows RoboCopy suit? A file sharing service such as Google Drive or
does bandwidth rule that out?

How will you delete the copied files so that the receiver PC doesn't fill
up?

Perhaps the EUMETSAT solution is best, but I've never used it.

Hugo,

Unfortunately NO. To receive 16APSK at all the SR1 demodulator stv090AAC *must* be set into single mode. This means your second LNB entry is dead. The TBS-6925 does not even have a second entry, only one tuner chip stb6100 and runs in demodulator single mode per default. The second plug on the TBS-6925 is a loop out
exactly as with the TBS-5925. With two TBS-6925 you can copy the same setup Christian demonstrates here:

http://gimli.hcpeters.de:81/pics/Setup-TC-big.png http://gimli.hcpeters.de:81/pics/Setup-TC-big.png http://gimli.hcpeters.de:81/pics/Setup-TC-big.png http://gimli.hcpeters.de:81/pics/Setup-TC-big.png

So you can probably receive with the SR1 two different transponders sending both 8PSK (in dual mode) but only one transponder sending 16APSK (in single mode). This is the big difference to the newer demodulator stv0910A that *can* receive two transponders sending 16APSK in dual mode. The maximum symbol rate per channel is reduced though in dual mode as both demodulator channels share the same LDPC FEC unit. So the chances that we will be able to receive both EUMETCast transponders with a single TBS-6983, TBS-6903 or TBS-6908 are still intact. These cards also have a more advanced dual tuner chip the stv6120. This chip allows for the *ONE* cable solution (only one LNB and no splitter) already demonstrated by multiple users of the MSG-1 list under Windows and under GNU/Linux here with a little help of CrazyCat. It's all about drivers. But with manufacturers as ST putting technical data under NDAs it's hard for Open Source programmers to really drive the HW to the possible limits. And it seems TBS has stopped their own Linux driver development and sacked it's GNU/Linux developer Konstantin Dimitrov almost a year ago :-(. Let's face it: EUMETCast users are a rather small bunch of very demanding people. So no big money for TBS to make here, just some prestige ...

Regards,
Ernst

Ernst,

If I understand you correctly ,the hardware in the SR1 is sufficient to receive the two transponders in 16APSK. The only reason it can only receive today one 8APSK and one 16APSK is firmware. There could be a problem of bandwidth of course.

Grts,
Hugo

David,

Thanks for the photo and your test. JP posted similar photos back in the pilot user phase. stb6100 is a single tuner. That's why the SR1 has two of them for dual mode. The TBS-6925 has only one stb6100 and cannot be used in dual mode (which is of no use for 16APSK with the stv090AAC demodulator anyway). So same HW but different behaviour: The SR1 is fine while the TBS-6925 8PSK56 with the currently available drivers is not.

Your results of TClogSummary shows that counting "Files/Lines" does still not work in 0.95. I thought I fixed that. I'll review that again but it might be Windows Version specific. I only have Windows 7 available here ...

Ernst
