If anyone is wondering why there is a slight "jump" in their RSS AVI the 0830 to 0850 inclusive cycles were sent with the wrong timestamp and are therefore not being processed by Animator. The timestamps were all 1 minute early ( ie 08.29 )

Very little MODIS data being sent at the moment. I only take data approx.
14 hours a day so cannot comment on overnight data, but yesterday only a
handful of files received in the evening and again today I have only 2 files
which have just been received.

David, you mentioned in your daily report a few days ago that you noticed
data levels were down. Given the size of MODIS-L1 files this might explain
the reduction in volume you noticed.

Ian.
====================================

Likely not relevant, but did you get this notice?

David,
obviously, I looked everywhere but in the lower left corner... Habits from the old APT
times... Solved. Thanks.

I also found single *sst*.bz files in the latest SAF folders and could open them. They
don't show the nice overview image like in

http://www.satsignal.eu/software/sea-ice-viewer.htm

Does it need a complete diurnal cycle of data to show a synopsis comprising more
than a single frame maybe?

TIA, cheers,

U.
===============================================

Glad you found the date & time stamp, Ulli.

I'm not an expert on the current SST files but I recall that some are more regional than others. Perhaps a regular user of the data can help you?

Hi Nigel (and others),

thanks to your advice I can see the SeaIce data perfectly now. After sorting out a
number of other problems with my re-installation in the past weeks (more about that
later) I seem to still have blocked the SeaSurfaceTemperature data.

Which boxes have to be checked in the MSG-DataManager? The [SAF-Global]
pointer to \received\ exists in recv-channels.ini.

Running the 3.x beta here.

SeaIceViewer is the registered version.

BTW - a visible date when the ice coverage images have been recorded would be
great. Some sort of "right-click-properties", maybe?

TIA for your GoodAdvice (tm)!

Cheers,
U.
======================================

Ulrich,

In the MSG Data Manager, I would expect "Ocean & Sea Ice" box to be checked in the SAF setup tab. Perhaps you need to register for the SST data? Maybe it's a different SAF-xxxxx stream? You might check the EUMETSAT Product Navigator and this page:

http://www.eumetsat.int/website/home/Data/DataDelivery/EUMETCast/ReceptionStationSetup/ChannelsandPIDs/index.html

Hi Ulrich,
I also use David's Sea Ice Viewer (currently version 1.4.4.64

These files are in my E:\MSG-1\Images\SAF\ folder.
Sea Ice viewer set up is pointing to the E:\MSG-1\Images folder - i.e.
the folder above the SAF folder.

Thanks for that, Ian. Yes, those are big files, so it could account for the difference. Checking back over the last few days the 26th does seem to have a little less data:

23 - 159 files
24 - 91 files
25 - 119 files
26 - 93 files
27 - 35 files so far

Perhaps someone could investigate further and report back to EUMETSAT?

=====================================

Having made the comment about TelliCast, it's rather unusual to see "Error processing file" messages, and I do wonder whether the files are actually corrupt, or whether some other software is hanging onto the files and not allowing the MSG Data Manager full access. This could be anti-virus or disk defragmentation software. The problem does appear to be somewhat intermittent.

Robert,

Take it a step back in the chain. Is your TelliCast system showing near zero missed and recovered packets?

These statistics were automatically collected for one of my systems over recent days:

Apr-22: Harstad: Missed Packets before FEC: 0 Recovered: 0, 53.342 GB
Apr-23: Harstad: Missed Packets before FEC: 0 Recovered: 0, 54.050 GB
Apr-24: Harstad: Missed Packets before FEC: 2 Recovered: 2, 50.596 GB
Apr 25: Harstad: Missed Packets before FEC: 0 Recovered: 0, 51.055 GB

So that there were no lost packets over the last 96 hours.

Thanks Alan, I didn't have Clear images and Notify scan end ticked (but I do now) let's see if this makes a difference. I'm clearly getting all the segments, but for some reason they are not being correctly assembled. The issue has been intermittent for more than than six months including before the change of satellite. Long periods of perfect imagery, and then the shambles like the past two days (and today). All without me poking my fingers into the works!

=======================================

That's quite unusual, Alan. They are usually sent in quite strict order, and the file timestamps should attest to this. You might like to check the MSG Data Manager log file, as that will show the timestamp of the segment as TelliCast set it. I suppose you are running NTP to keep your system time correct?

http://www.satsignal.eu/ntp/setup.html

What data shows this out-of-order tendency - FSD or the main full-scan data? Perhaps when you next notice out-of-order data you might do some checking, please.

I have not experienced any problems, but I'm not clear on what you are reporting. I regularly see segments come in out of order, but as MSG DM puts them in the right places, the final image is OK and I have never seen an unusable file. What settings do you have in MSG DM? In my case, the following boxes are checked:
Clear images
Notify scan end
Persistent images
Show MTSAT tab
Skip data before data
Wait for segments.
