David, your Windows 8 test box (presumably Dexatek/ DVBWorld) I assume is
running on Windows 8 32-bit.

I have spent ages trying to get my Dexatek box to run on Windows 8 64 bit
without success. It is the old drivers (2007/2008) which are needed for
Windows 7 64 bit which are not working.

I like Windows 8, but unfortunately using the 64-bit version on my 1
computer set-up I am finding the results disappointing with my SkyStar card
and Technisat HD USB box. I am reverting back to Windows 7 64-bit probably
at the weekend possibly with a new SSD running everything (interesting !!! )

Regards
Ian.
==============================================

Yes, Ian, the notebook on;y has 2 GB memory (and that's maxed out, it came
with 1 GB), so I felt that the 32-bit OS was more appropriate than the
64-bit OS. I do have a DVB World box working on PC Alta running Win-7/64.
Your notes on driver choice helped:

http://www.satsignal.eu/wxsat/Dexatek/Dexatek.html#64-bit
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/MSG-1/message/14071

Perhaps these may relate to John's problem.

I'm surprised by your comment on the TechniSat USB HD box - I've tried the
earlier USB 2 box (on Vista-32) and it seemed to work correctly. In what
respect are your results "disappointing"?

Without a touch-screen, I am struggling to see any advantage in Windows-8,
so I would welcome your observations there, but perhaps it should be a new
thread!

Cheers,
David

I am maybe being a little unfair with the Technisat HD USB Box as there are two unknowns ---- a new untried box on a new beta operating system and Technisat windows 8 drivers not yet available.

My losses are fairly minor but I am seeing high figures for Missed and recovered packets. However I did try the Technisat box on Windows 7 for about 2 hours and although that is a very short period there was signs of missed and recovered packets, something I never saw with my Dexatek box or old SkyStar PCI card.

When I go back to Windows 7 64-bit I will be able to give it a good test.

I will make comment on Windows 8 later as I am just on the way out.

Regards
Ian.

John,

What does the TelliCast log file say? Or the same through the HTML shell?
Have you checked the IP address of the DVB S2 box? I see I had a similar
problem on my Windows-8 test box, and that was because I had removed UDP
access from tc-recv.exe in the Windows Firewall settings. Might be worth
checking that tc-recv.exe is allowed both UDP and TCP access through the
firewall, in both private and public domains.

Can you PING 192.168.238.238?

Re: IASI Sea Surface Temperature L2PCore.

shona.mackie@rocketmail.com <shona.mackie@...>

You can use IDL to open and view IASI level 2 data. There's an API for IDL on the EUMETSAT website which contains the functions you need for reading them.

Info on data format here:
http://oiswww.eumetsat.org/WEBOPS/eps-pg/IASI-L2/IASIL2-PG-index.htm

API can be downloaded from here (EPS format IDL reader)
http://www.eumetsat.int/Home/Main/DataAccess/SupportSoftwareTools/index.htm?l=en

Hope that helps

Hello Peter,

It's not just size that counts! It's disk access times and buffer if you
are not running a RAM drive. As David has said elsewhere a disk with
less than 100GB is quite satisfactory under most conditions if you have
a two computer set-up and are not planning to leave data unprocessed..

As to the processing side - how long is a piece of string? - How much
data do you want to archive or keep for periods. It all depends on how
much data you are accessing and processing. You could easily get 10Gb a
day of data with the basics for example. Then again you may want to
store other files created by some of the imaging software, albeit these
will be of lesser size.

Also make sure you have the appropriate file retention settings in the
data managers to ensure you don't use up all the space on a disk!

Cheers
James

The Eumetsat Channel 12 data which is saved in MSG-1/Images /Fire (MOD14) can be opened by David's ModisL1 Viewer.

Hope that helps.

Yes I do refer to the Eumetcast channel 12 data.
I now find under MSG-1 images fire some MYD and MOD data - yet I am unable to open these.
Kindly advise with which programme/s I could manage to open these files smoothly.

Hello,
I wonder if the use of MSG D.M. allows still to see fires in
Spain/Portugal.
Although I think I ticked all relevant boxes and set D.M. to show
channel 12 fire data I am still unable to see any fires there.
I would be most grateful for any hints how to overcome this problem.
Thanks in advance & regards.
Roland

===================================================================

Just in case there is any mix up (and some of the replies suggest there
could be) the reference to channel 12 data for fires means Eumetcast
Channel
12 data and not channel 12 on Meteosat 9 SEVIRI.

Regards,
Douglas.

Unfortunately xrit2pic doesn't work on our systems (linux library issues)

Simon,

xrit2pic can add lon/lat lines, also called in a script. So you don't
need the gui. Output can be pgm/16-bits or 8 bits or jpeg; input are the
received raw files.

See:

FYI there's a significant fire in Trinidad (I think) at the moment, it's
visible in the low-res MSG data and - once the window slides over - should
be visible in Ch12 also.
