No today was the start of decontamination of the satellite....so no IR until
Friday.
May I respectfully suggest you read the admin messages which have been
advising of this in great detail since last year.

msg-1 reception with linux

hi all
I am a linux entusiast so I decided to make a linux based
receiving station. I have got tellique software from eumetsat
(linux version, obviously) and I have installed it on my
red hat 9.0 workstation.
the problem is that I have not found instructions and documentation
about linux version of software.
for example I don't know if I have to recompile the kernel or
if there is a loadable module for it, I dont't know how to configure
it, and so on ..........................

Is there someone that has a working linux system ???
Can you give me a link of a site that describes all steps
to configure correctly the system ??

thanks in advance for your help

Douglas,

I think that there may be problems resulting from trying to cram too
much down data channel 3, possibly the sequence errors we see on Met-
5 and some MPEF products.

What will happen on MSG-2 and MSG-3 where these bandwidths are fixed
and not adjustable? I guess that as dissemination will be via
Hotbird, the limited bandwidth won't matter. Just a thought, though.

Am I the only one not able to lock onto the Sailing Channel on the
same Deutsche Telekom transponder as EUMETCast?

My receiver now shows "service unknown" instead of the channel
name... too bad if the got rid of it, it was a nice way to check if
the whole transponder stream was working OK.

Ian,

I did a rescan of the transponder, and infact it is gone. :-(

Kurdsat will then become by "beacon" channel, and hopefully "Breaking
the Ice" will stay on the transponder, as it is probably much nicer,
given the promos being broadcasted just now.

Sailing Channel is still available FTA on 11200V.

Bye, Luca

I haven't animated this - it sounds great!

Looking at the static images I think aircraft trails, as you can see
the shadow of some of the trails on the lower clouds. The
dispersion does look more like ship trails, though.

Most interesting. I have been watching it all day. What really surprises
me is how it forms and looks in a Channel 5 WV animation.

Robert,
I also saw that phenomenon. It seemed as though the lines started off in
mid-Spain heading east-west (or the inverse), and were rotated round and
moved north by the low embedded in the jet stream. I took them to be
aircraft contrails.

Best regards - Alan

Folks,

I note from the release notes that the Tellique software does not
work with the Hyperthreading feature of newer processors enabled.
Indeed, I turned that feature off in the BIOS on my latest PC. Has
anyone tried the software with Hyperthreading enabled? (Recent
Pentium 4 processors have this "HT" feature.)

Looking ahead, has anyone tested with the AMD 64-bit processors?
These are now on sale and being offered to new PC purchasers. I
would hate to think of someone spending a large amount of money only
to find the software didn't work!

Cheers,
David

Re: Tellique and the newer Intel & AMD processors

Roger Mawhinney <roger@...>

I was at a recent seminar (October 2003) in an Intel fabrication plant and
whilst Hyperthreading was not the main topic, it was discussed. It should
work quite transparently with Windows XP, taking advantage of those
operations that specifically support it such as Microsoft Internet Explorer.
In essence, your normal application should run as usual, but applications
such as IE run as if using a second processor. I saw demos using Microsoft
Office, Abode Reader and a few other applications all loading and running
very fast indeed - well they would since it was Intel running them! I would
venture to suggest however, that the motherboard may need to be using
Intel's latest chipset. Also make sure you've got all the latest XP
upgrades and patches from Microsoft and drivers for your PC.

Re: Tellique and the newer Intel & AMD processors

Guy Martin <agm@...>

Most software isn't written to make use of hyperthreading and as you pointed out some actually fails. In fact most software can't make use of multi-processing. We are (work this is) replacing 100 clients in the summer. 64 bit is an option, if anyone has one let we know what it does, or more importantly doesn't.

Cheers, Guy

I had read the hyperthreading note as well and had it initially disabled.
However once my new PC had become stable I decided to activate it again. Over a
period of about 3 weeks now I didn't get a single disruption, alarm or
unexplained lost segment. So it may not be officially supported (tested?) but
it certainly does work in my system.
On 64 bit CPU I can not tell you.

Thanks for the report. It only applies to the PC with the DVB card
and Tellique software installed. Hyperhtreading is only enabled
with Windows XP, service pack 1, I believe. The check is to see if,
when running the Windows Task Manager, Performance tab, two CPU
usage plots are displayed side-by-side or just one.

As I said, I don't have direct experience of this, just what I saw
in the release notes. If it actually does work OK, great!
