Re: Testbild

John, thanks for that confirmation. I was aware that the Testbild channel was nothing to do with Eumetsat, but I think its disappearance may be tied up to recent uplink issues and the likely uplink change to Eumetcast instigated by Media Broadcast.

Ian.

Ian,

I took this up with Ops the other day and am in continuing discussions
with them.
One thing to say - and was pointed out by Ops, is that the testbild TV
channel was entirely under the control of the uplink supplier - Media and
Broadcast(?).
EUMETSAT merely send them the EUMETCast data to 'put onto' the satellite
uplink feed.
It appears they were not aware testbild had disappeared.

Regards,
John.

Ian,

It's currently my understanding following recent exchanges with Ops that
there hasn't actually been a change in the uplink - as such.
And you have proved that the testbild channel was not active at 07:00 on
the morning of the sudden level drop after 12:00 UTC.

There was an upgrade on August 10 to the uplink server and there have been
'problems on the RF side at Usingen last week' - quite what, I don't know.

However, they are now aware of our indicated lower signal level from Friday
and investigations are ongoing - as they say.

Regards,
John.

Re: Testbild

Ian Deans

Peter, the Testbild test card has not been available now for quite a few days. There had clearly been some problems with Eumetcast causing missing data and it is suspected that the uplink has been changed. This has resulted in a drop in Signal quality and the Testbild channel off air.

I am using an old back-up XP computer today with a SkyStar card and a dodgy HD so I am very restricted. However even with the lower signal and no Testbild you should still be receiving data.

Regards
Ian.

This morning Thursday 3 sept I am not receiving any data and the test card is not being displayed.
I have check this with both the DVDWorld and a Topfield sat receiver.
Other commercial TV stations on Eurobird 9 are OK.

Both receivers indicate a near good signal strength but with the Extended signal strength signal/audio on the Topfied the audio signal appers faulty.

I hope that the above makes sense !!!

Hello Enzo,

Your problem must be IE8, try the advise given on
http://carbonize.co.uk/wp/2009/03/23/ie8-problems-fixes/

If this fails try to revert to IE7 or IE6
Or install Firefox !

When you don't have JAVA support you will see the overview page opening but where the graph should be a text is displayed: "can't display throughput graph"

Good luck,
Arne van Belle

Re: Ku-band strength drop after 12:00 UTC Friday Aug 28

Ian Deans

I am seeing a reduction in my SQ from about 91-94% to 82-85%. My SS is down
from about 59/60% to a steady 58%. I have a fairly long cable run hence the
low SS.

The problem re freezing with no Testbild channel appears to have been
resolved as I tested this last night and again this morning and all OK with
channel not available.

However with no losses today so far it does appear, that as Arne suggested,
probably a change in uplink.

Regards
Ian.

All,

I've not been receiving for a couple of days.
Having read the news, I've just switched on the system and find indeed
lower levels indicated - well, lower SQ.

The DVBWorld readout using a pre-latest GEO shop batch of boxes, I'm
getting SS 70% and SQ 91%.
Previously this was always SS 70 - 71% and SQ 100%.

And, as Ian said, the testbild channel is not active - though trying to
open it didn't freeze the DVBWorld box.

I'll put a digital meter on the downlink later to get more accurate
figures.

Regards,
John.

Ah! No missed packets, no lost data and no increase in 0.fsy. Much better in spite of lower SQ & SNR.

My digital meter readings taken at 10:25 and 14:25 UTC today are actually
not much different to some I took back in March - for some reason(?).
C/N figure is not as good today (down 1 dB) compared to March though other
levels are only slightly down and there are some BE's being indicated.
My DVBWorld SQ readout is still down.

Meter readings at the computer are:

PWR 83/84 dBuV.
C/N 13.0/.1 dB.
SS 68/70%.
SQ 79/82%.

John.

What a perverse system I have!! If anything there has been a marginal increase in sig quality and s/n ratio as indicated on the Porthcawl grap on the above. I can only assume there was perhaps a very slight mis-alignment which now takes advantage of the new transponder - otherwise I'm left scratching my head - and also feeling unhappy that so many are now seeing a significant dip.

Re: Ku-band strength drop after 12:00 UTC Friday Aug 28

I also noticed that the Testbild channel has been unavailable since I
switched on this morning at about 07.00 UTC. Possible that may be connected
to issues with uplink.

My Dexatek Box opens up on Testbild and the fact that it was unavailable
caused the box to freeze for some reason, and I had to reboot the
computer to get it working again.

The signal dropped here at 12:12 and triggered a lot of lost messages.
But it did stop my missing Metop data and improved other data.
It looks like problems are almost gone now !

My guess is that Media Broadcast did switch EUMETCast over to another
uplink or modulator.
