My own 'main' computer has just failed (probably motherboard) and I am now using a single lesser spec.computer. It can deal with everything but not simultaneously without virtually grinding to a halt. It is the small but accumulative things that matter. Hard drive no longer 7200, memory not DDR, memory only 512MB not 1024Mb, processor now 1200 not 2000...all take a toll. Strangely segment loss does not seem to be an issue, although I do not take everything and until my 'main' computer is repaired I am taking it easy... no HRV animations in GSS 4 etc.! Does still surprise me what is possible with a bit of careful use, so for those holding back have a go and still enjoy the hobby with a little computer management. Regards Douglas.

twin?
Ap van Weeren
Has anybody experience with a twin LNB, do you get the
same signalstrength as on a single one. I started today with receiving MSG from Eumetsat. Signalstrength 45%. But we use the same dish for the sittingroom TV. I have one computer AMD 2.6 gHz memory 512MB, HD 120 GB in 4 parts. On one of them I installed the Skystar and Tellique software. The software from David and the data channels are on another part. I have no experience with the software at all, so reading the list and the help files from David for advice. Before I did the APT, with a VHFships aerial and with a scanner/TV amplifier, and got pictures. But now changed to senior-apartment, no permission for aerials what-so-ever. After months of negotiations, dish (64cm) motorized, and the aerial are there. Now I got the pics from channel 2 and 3 but from channel 1 the files won't open via MSG data manager. This was my story at the moment. Enjoying always the mails in the lists also from RIG. (The trouble there will vanish). Thanks , regards, Ap van Weeren __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! Photos - easier uploading and sharing. http://photos.yahoo.com/

I have the Hauppauge nexus-s card I beleive its a skystar 1 but not
sure. Does anyone have this card running with the Tellicast system. Been using the card for sat TV for a long time but never used it for data until recently on the sat at once service. Regards Bill

John,
MSG has been back to normal full scans since 11.30 UTC so problem unfortunately must be at your end. There does however appear to be a problem with channel 6 although I don't take that channel myself. It would also appear that the 15.15 UTC cycle was not sent, but everything else ok. Hope that helps. Regards Ian

Re: Data?????
Is anyone getting pictures? Or have I broken something?John, data has been fine here from the 11:30 repeat cycle onwards, athough channel 6 (WV_073) has been rather more off than on. Nothing from Eumetsat about this problem. [For those using the MSG Data Manager, I would suggest turning off "Wait for segments" for one scan of the receive PC every so often just to clear the channel 6 segments. Or delete them from the Tellique received folder.] Cheers, David

Data?????
John Parkins <john@...>
Hello All,
I've had the RX computer off for most of this morning, upgrading a few things and I've just managed to get it back on. Loads of data going through but nothing in the log and nothing in the received folder. I knew there were going to be interruptions today but I thought they were meant to end at 12:00. Is anyone getting pictures? Or have I broken something? -- Best regards, John mailto:kvp@...

Agree. Our collective experience seems to be that the two-PC approach is best by
far, but one will work OK, though the lower spec the less can be done with other memory-hungry programs without interfering with MSG-1 data. Once anyone gets hooked I guess they will be saving hard for that second PC (or, I suppose, giving up all other activities on the one PC!). Robert Quoting David Taylor <david-taylor@...>: 1. Re: newbie setting up for MSG
1. I want a system that acts like a Meteosat WEFAX system - tobe able to view a European or global sector every 1/2 hour in either VIS or IR and animate it. Every 1/4 hour would be preferable but one has to be realistic. Can I do that and what system spec would I require - one or two computers? One dedicated computer (but I don't recommend that) or two PCs networked. Spec for processing (or single) PC: 1-2GHz+ processor, 512MB-1GB memory (1GB memory if you want to use the HRV or Meteosat- 5 visible channel). Fast hard disks with 2MB or 8MB buffers. See below for second Receiver PC spec. 2. I want 24 hour full imaging and animation and want real-timedisplay of any channel I chose. Can I do that and what system spec do I need - two computer I suspect? Same answer as above, with more emphasis on CPU speed and memory. 3. I just want to dip in every now and again to see 'what'sgoing on' and use the computer for other things at other times. Can I do that and what system spec do I need? For me, the killer here is "use the computer for other things". For example, if you start doing complex image processing, making panoramas, complex spreadsheets etc., the CPU load that produces can cause missing segments. If this doesn't matter, that's fine. The 500MHz PC below would to that, but I would suggest at least 256MB of memory. 4. What is the most basic computer spec I can use to downloadEUMETCast accepting considerable downgrading of the systems possibilities? If you don't mind missing very occasional segments, 500MHz Pentium III with 256MB memory - data capture only. Use a separate processing PC. In short: - if you want to do everything on a single PC, try to make sure it's a good one (1-2GHz+, 512MB-1GB according to your aims) and expect missing segments if you overload the single PC with other tasks. So make it a dedicated MSG-1 PC if possible. Use Windows 2000 or XP. - if you can find a 500MHz PC for separate receiver use, most of the potential problems disappear, and you can do what the heck you like on the Processing PC. Use Windows 2000 or XP. There's nothing to stop you using the single PC solution to start with, and migrating to two PCs as funds allow. Does that answer the question? Does anyone else agree? Cheers, David

From cycle 1200 up to now (2145) Eumetsat is still sending the miniscan at 5 minutes interval. MDM does handle correctly. But as you noticed, channel 6 (WV 7.3) is not formatted correctly. I managed to compose an animation from 104 images ch09 (IR 10.8)from 12:00 to 20:40. Astonishing how smooth such a 5 minute interval animation runs. A pity however that occasionally I do see the image "jumping" up and the lower scan lines are a bit "out of sync". Unfortunately at 47 Mb this AVI is too large to upload. Still have to reprocess yesterdays data with 3 minute interval scans ! Greetings, Arne van Belle

The trouble with old(er) age, is that either one slows down or the clock speeds up. Sitting here writing Christmas cards I find I keep writing 'whatever happened to 2003?' I'm sure I'm not alone. Yes, I did ask users some months ago about what systems they were using for MSG EUMETCast reception. There was quite a good response - for which I'm very grateful, but that now has to be condensed into a meaningful form. Not so easy and rather time consuming and what will one learn anyway? I have to admit that nothing has yet been prepared and is not likely to be before the New Year. I thought it was a good idea at the time given the variation in users set-ups and with recent posts the 'debate' on 'what do I need?' continues and there seems to be not one definitive answer. Apart from that computer specifications seem to get better by the month! It seems to me to boil down to what do you want to do? And, what do I need to do such and such. Several are saying that you really need a stand alone MSG system - that is a computer not used for anything else. But that depends on what one requires from 'MSG.' Well, let me put the ball back in the experts court. 1. I want a system that acts like a Meteosat WEFAX system - to be able to view a European or global sector every 1/2 hour in either VIS or IR and animate it. Every 1/4 hour would be preferable but one has to be realistic. Can I do that and what system spec would I require - one or two computers? 2. What is the most basic computer spec I can use to download EUMETCast accepting considerable downgrading of the systems possibilities? Both you, David and Arne have told me of having used quite a 'low spec' computer for reception which works OK but that will require a second 'better' computer for processing and display. Could the current fastest and 'best specified' home computers do it all in real-time - reception, processing and display and animation all at the same time? Regards, John.

All,20:06. The signal was very strong and steady and the WEFAX image perfect. John, thanks for that confirmation. There appear to be a couple of things that need attention on the MSG-1 relay: sometimes the segments are out of order which means that an initially incomplete image is saved, and sometimes the feed into the MSG-1 processor seems to get stuck, and we get repeated lines in the northern part of the scan when the image at Eumetsat is perfect. Eumetsat are working on these issues. From what I can gather, users of the MSG Data Manager are well ahead of others in being able to access these images. Cheers, David Web: http://www.satsignal.net

have the effect of changing the orbit - that is how it is moved. You have to cause the opposite change at the end of the manoevre to stop it continuing to move (Newton!). A nice method of changing attitude and doing gentle stationkeeping is through the use of momentum wheels. The only problem with these is that the bearings tend to pack up after some years in space, and they need the momentum to be dumped from time to time through the use of the thrusters. I suspect Hubble has momentum wheels as this gives gentle movement and no thruster pollution possibilities. Regards - Alan

Guys,

I did NOT say that MSG1 was 3 axis stabilized, but that it had thrusters which were capable of producing thrust in the three axes which are used for attitude control and stationkeeping. Try the following link: http://www.eumetsat.de/en/index.html?area=left7.html&body=/en/dps/dissemination.html&a=710&b=1&c=700&d=700&e=0 The following is an excerpt from the link's target: Satellite Propulsion The MSG propulsion system inherits the unified bi-propellant system already proven on communication satellites and some scientific missions. It includes: a.. 4 propellant tanks providing a large storage capacity (up to 965 kg of propellant) b.. 2 helium pressurant tanks c.. 2 liquid fuelled apogee motors each giving 400 N thrust for apogee manoeuvres in transfer/drift orbits d.. 6 reaction-control thrusters for fine orbital manoeuvres, attitude acquisition and maintenance Satellite Attitude and Orbit Control System AOCS The MSG AOCS is designed on a minimum-complexity basis. It takes full advantage of the Meteosat experience, and the fact that the spinner concept provides gyroscopic stability. The onboard real time operations provide: a.. attitude sensor processing and spin rate determination b.. attitude and orbit manoeuvre synchronization c.. active nutation damping. The sensors comprise Sun slit sensors, Earth horizon crossing sensors, and accelerometers. I hope that clears it up! Best regards - Alan
