Beginning to wonder if this old satellite is developing problems. Once again
the 15.00 UTC visible is degraded and all three images this morning at 9.00
UTC had a nasty horizontal line through them. I assume it must be scanner
problems.

Those missing segments

Lawrence, I don't believe it is my software that is causing the
problem, either. I will reply to you on the MSG-1 list.

I am still uncertain as to where the problem lies. I have a system
here that, under normal circumstances, doesn't loose segments. I
have seen a very occasional loss (say every other week) which I
could ascribe to the weekly defrag run on the disk with the Tellique
log files and staged MSG-1 data files. However, over the last few
days the system has been loosing a few segments a day, whereas a
second parallel system did not. This is similar to what other
people have reported - sudden unexplained losses of segments.

On checking the Tellique log file, I found that there were an awful
lot of "Missed file" messages around the period in question. I
understand this is normal, and refers to LRIT data which has been
interrupted by higher priority LRIT data, forcing the waiting files
to be transmitted later.

However, I did wonder whether all the activity of writing to the log
file with all these "missed file" messages was actually then causing
a data loss. Note that compared to Eumetsat's current standard I
run without the log file buffering enabled, and with verbose rather
than normal logging, so I may be creating problems for myself. I
have now turned on the log file buffered writing in the RECV.ini:

[locations] section: log_file =>> recv.log

So far today I ahve had one missing segment on the main PC, 1445,
HRIT ch 10, seg 4. The Transponder Status screen shows no
uncorrected blocks, and there is nohting like a bunch of missed file
messages in the Tellique log file. Why that segment is missing I
have no idea.

Suggestions:

- you may want to look at the log file for the period where you have
missing segments.

- you may want to run the Transponder Status screen looking at the
SNR and in particular for any uncorrected blocks. Warning, some
people have reported that this _causes_ missing segments.

- you may want the change the Tellique logging level and turn on
buffered log file writing.

- check if anything is blocking the satellite signal - aircraft,
birds, trees etc. I hear it is windy down south today - is your
dish absolutely aligned and steady?

Going back to my original comments about "missed files", I wonder
what it is that has to be given priority on the LRIT channel? I get
the impression that the LRIT channel is heavily loaded - could
Eumetsat purchase a little more bandwidth for it to reduce that
loading, and hence the congestion causing these file re-
transmissions. Just thinking aloud.....

Cheers,
David

why is it important to separate them and could someone send me a
copy of a correct .ini file?
Paul,

There is no need to separate them if:

- you process and delete the data right away (e.g. with the MSG Data
Manager)

- you turn off the data you don't use (e.g. ATOVS data on Data
Channel 1 - remove the PID 500 [0x1F4])

Otherwise, unless you are using NTFS, you will run up against the
limit of the number of files in a single folder, and in any case,
having too many files makes for poor efficiency.

David

I am now receiving data,a reinstall of the software cured the
problem.
All the data gos into the received folder,i have tried to edit the
recv channels.ini file by adding the lines of text that are in
eumetsats help file but i cant get it to work.

I noticed from previous posts that there was a copy of a .ini file
in the files section on here but i guess its been removed.

why is it important to separate them and could someone send me a
copy of a correct .ini file?

thanks for all your help

Meteosat-5 - midnight slots

David J Taylor GM8ARV 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🇪🇺

Folks,

Eumetsat has started sending midnight slots for Meteosat-5 but,
unlike all other satellite data, it is stamped at 2400 for the day
before rather than 0000 for the current day. I have asked Eumetsat
if it might be possible to rename the data so that it conforms will
all other HRIT/LRIT data, but I don't knwo if they will do that.

Of course, 2400 is an invalid time (2359 is the latest minute), so
the current MSG Data Manager will reject this data. If anyone is
desparate, I have a version of the program which allows the 2400
data, timestamps it to 0000 "+1 day", but still saves it as "2400".
Before making any further ad-hoc changes I want to see if Eumetsat
will fix the problem.

Cheers,
David

Hi Douglas

I received my software before i got my dvb receiver so i installed
it first.I did have to manually edit the recv.ini file.i have just
uninstalled and reinstalled the software, this time i did not have
to edit the ini file. Also noticed that in the recv.ini file it says
user_key_crypt so i guess its been encrypted because its now
different to the key i entered on the first install screen.

I will let you know what happens.I need to test it at work as i dont
have a dish at home yet.(very high back to back terrace facing wrong
way)

Paul

Hello Paul. Two things to mention. My Tellique software is old
but my
brother has a more recent version. He did not need to manually
edit the
recv.ini file (as I had to do) as it was prompted automatically
during the
program loading.
Secondly, if you bring up the html shell page (right click on the
purple
icon in the taskbar), select Licence from the menu on the left, is
there
under client identification a string of numbers and letters beside
host_key_1, 2 and 3.

All,

Sorry this is sort of off topic in a way but not in another sense.

Those of you downloading MSG-1 data via EUMETCast on Hot Bird-6 are in a
position to receive these transmissions as well.

Christmas Day 2003 will see (hopefully) the successful landing of the British
Beagle 2
on the surface of Mars.
This is part of ESA's Mars Express mission.

ESA TV carry update transmissions, of this and other missions, via Hot

Failure to delete source files in C:\Tellique\received\

Failure to delete source files in C:\Tellique\received\

Folks, I have received a couple of reports that the files in the
Tellique directory aren't being deleted, although it seems to be OK
for most people.

If you are getting this fault, could you please:

- ensure that you have the "Delete files from RX box" checked

- check that the program has delete access to the folder

- tell me if the deleting used to work OK, and when it stopped
working

- list the file names of a few of the files that are not being
deleted. I want to know if these are normal segment files, MPEF
data, or ATVOS data.

Thanks,
David

No same here David
John
Thanks, John. It's the same on both my PCs (common antenna), and the
Tellique HTML shell still shows throughput on the announcement channel, so
I guess it must be the path from Eumetsat to the HotBird6 uplink, or
something at the Eumetsat end that is the problem.

Hope they get the night-shift to reboot whatever!

Cheers,
David
