Re: animation back-steps
Robert Moore
David did you notice that at around 0730 today the animations all took a
little back-step with the clouds reversing direction? I presume this is some little glitch at the EUMETSAT end. Robert Yes, there seemed to be one of the steps in the image that we sometimes observe. As if the scan mirror or its position sensor gets a few lines out. Cheers, David ------------------------------ Robert Moore tel and fax: 44 (0) 1352 714456

Re: MSG PAYMENT PROBLEM HELP
Barry, you cannot get your e-token until you have the necessarylicence from your country's licensing authority which for us will be the UK Met. Office. So therefore you will need to pay twice to Eumetsat, once for the software today and once for the eToken later, so there will be two lots of bank charges. This is unfortunate, but it's the way it is right now. You will be able get data until March without the eToken, so there's plenty of time to save up! Compared to the cost of receiving the data directly from Meteosat 7, with a large dish for high-resolution PDUS reception, and the key unit, and the receiver, a few pounds for bank charges is quite insignificant, although I agree that any extra cost should be minimised. Cheers, David

DVB dish etc
Robert Moore
I ran a three day infra red animation 12th to 15th, western Europe. Not only did
this give a spectacular view of the storm forming but it enabled me to identify which part of the storn caused segment loss through dish-wobble. Centre of storm passed through Ireland and then across IOM. I had no segment loss on the leading edge of the storm as the fronts went through, but from the storm's closest point and along its trailing edge, as the wind went around to the NW, the segment losses occurred. A nice confirmation that it is NW winds that are my problem. Robert ------------------------------ Robert Moore tel and fax: 44 (0) 1352 714456

Re: DVB Dishes

I was away for the high winds here in N. Wales, so don't know exactly how it hit
my house. From my hospital bed (I'm fine folks!) it seemed to be south westerly gusting to force 8. I left MSG data Manager running and on my return noted some HRIT segment lossed from 1415 on 14th until 0200 today 15th, losses concentrated in the earlier part of the period. From then on, perfect reception. IODC data
Thanks for the update David. I imagine there are a few folk inEastern England who can receive Meteosat 5 directly, but it adds for the rest of us a further dimension to the global network. The possibilities of doing a Mercator mosaic using HRIT data is I guess getting nearer ;-)) Don't forget that you can already get the full resolution IODC binary data via FTP at 30 minute intervals, albeit 24 hours delayed (unless you have a Met Office licence, then near real-time perhaps?). The data will be LRIT, of course, but I guess you mean digital rather than WEFAX. Cheers, David

Should make it a little easier to get you data near to day one! Cheers, David

Thanks David do you think they would take a travellers cheque?Barry, Traveller's cheques require a physical presence, I believe, so would involve you in a trip to Darmstadt! The majority opinion is that you should do what the rest of us have done - get a draft or cheque from your bank in Euros. The fact that you have to pay extra is something that you need to take up with the politicians who have kept us outside the Euro system. I believe that this topic is now closed. Cheers, David

Re: Sky2PC USB
I have not encountered any problems so far. The only thing I havenoticed is the difference in Quality and SNR which as you say appear meaningless although more in line with those on my Digital STB. I found that the USB dongle was very unreliable on the one system I tested with the V2.4.8 drivers. For no apparent reason, the light on the dongle would go out and no data would be received. The system could be revived simply by unplugging and re-inserting the dongle (if you happened to be near the PC at the time), but the lost data was gone for ever. OK, it is uncertain what the exact problem was - on that system I am now running a 1m USB extension cable (having the dongle visible at the front of the PC it's much easier to check the status, but was there an issue before with bad contact?), and I am running a replacement dongle. However, the first dongle now seems to be running OK on a backup PC (also with the V4.2.2 drivers). That, coupled with the odd CPU utilisation pattern, says to me steer clear of V4.2.8. Cheers, David

And hopefully we are going to find the UK Met office willing to supply us with a licence for the dongles. James, This announcement puzzles me. I am in touch with Eumetsat and have just received a data sample of Meteosat 5 data prepared for MSG-1 from July (unfortunately just a single segment). This is in segmented image format, just like all the other satellite data, and could easily be added to the program. However, the OPEN_MTP format is not compressed, or segemented, and the data files are huge. Even with BZ2 compression (as used on the FTP services) a single visible-channel file occupies over 8MB (for the 5000 x 5000 image). So receiving these files will be more difficult, and require that the OPEN-MTP file be stored on disk (probably being built up from chunks of files), and then read back in, be calibrated, and converted to an image. I hope that Eumetsat reconsider this format, and allow Meteosat 5 data to be sent in the segmented image format used for all other satellites. Cheers, David
