Sorry to hear that the rogue XP Antivirus 2008 did already cause some a lot
I want to add that this threat does not come via E-mail but is forced on
your PC when browsing the web and disguises itself as a regular windows
Some report that the download starts automatically and cannot be cancelled,
others say that it is installed silently by a download Trojan that may have
been on your PC after installing certain codecs.
If you see unwanted downloads and cannot cancel them, pull your network
cable immediately and restart windows.
Be aware that many Antivirus programs do not recognise or remove Spyware and
Trojans. A regular check for spyware is advised on your internet browsing
There are many free spyware scanners that do a good job like Windows
Defender, Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot Search and Destroy, Malwarebytes'
Anti-Malware, Hitman Pro, Spyware Doctor, CWShredder.
To prevent such an attack, keep your internet browsing PC up to date and
install a personal firewall like ZoneAlarm.
Using another browser like Firefox also reduces the risks as many of these
exploits use security gaps in Internet Explorer
