Wednesday Simplexton Net Results #simplex-results

K4PEW Paul Wieloszynski <k4pew@...>

See/Hear the net here.

Another VERY productive Simplexton Net tonight with the following results:
35 check-ins on 146.415 FM with EXCELLENT conditions.
14 check-ins on 28.415 USB

Tonight's quote of renown:
“Listen with curiosity. Speak with honesty. Act with integrity. The greatest problem with communication is we don’t listen to understand. We listen to reply. When we listen with curiosity, we don’t listen with the intent to reply. We listen for what’s behind the words.”

Re: Weather Balloon?

Thanks!  I have an RTL2832 SDR dongle.  I haven't tried any SDR software on the Pi 4 but the software I tried on a windows machine was so resource intensive it made the SDR dongle almost useless. I tossed the dongle aside and haven't used it since.  Guess I could try the SDR dongle with the Pi 4.

I've been meaning get "round to it" with the Raspberry Pi 4 I built some time ago. Since I'm recovering from recent back surgery (doing pretty well after surgery but having trouble sleeping and a few other problems); I decided to mess with the Raspberry Pi 4 some. I installed Direwolf and Xastir on the Pi 4 and connected my FT-8900R to the Pi 4 with a USB sound card which is connected to the 1200 baud data out pin on the FT-8900R data jack. Today I was looking at the decodes on 144.390 Mhz and saw what I guess is a weather balloon?  If so, it seems like it would have a better description than "Original Balloon  to identify what it is.  Most of the info in the decoded data is obvious. Like the position, I take it the speed is the wind speed at the altitude of the balloon.  I guess course is the direction the balloon is moving.   What is StrTrk, 192, 9 and 1.45V?   I take it -33C and 7458Pa is the temperature and barometric pressure at the balloon altitude.

On the Amateur Radio Roundtable with Tom Medlin / W5KUB and Bill Brown / WB8ELK they often discuss balloon launches. Bill is from AL and is heavily into assisting people to learn more about launching and tracking their balloons. Track him down on YouTube.

Will entertain any halfway reasonable offer for one or both.

Saturday Night Net Results #simplex-results

K4PEW Paul Wieloszynski <k4pew@...>

See/Hear the Saturday Night's Net HERE.

Two good things happened Saturday:
- The Simplexton (twice monthly, as some are wont to call it, semi-monthly) Breakfast went swimmingly with 16 in attendance. Some were even awake.
- Secondly, the net went swimmingly as well, with the following results:

36 check-ins on 146.415 FM
14 check-ins on 144.240 USB
12 check-ins on 50.135 USB

Steve, I'm no help on suggestions for getting it repaired, but I will tell you that there is no activity on the 1.25M band in this area. Is it possible that its actually still working but just no one listening? I have a tri band mobile that will operate on 1.25M but I've never heard anyone else on any of the 222 MHz frequencies.
