Coax Adapters #antennas

WW0CJ Colin

Hello,

I'll start with an introduction since this is my first email to the group - I'm Colin KO4JZT, 17 years old currently operating out of the Forest Hills/Belle Meade area of Nashville. In exactly a week, I will have been an Amateur Operator for 1 full month!

Last night I purchased all of the parts I need to build a handheld tape measure Yagi antenna, but I am hoping to reuse some old coax cabling I have from TV installations. The purpose of the antenna is to do satellite communications with my Baofeng UV-5R, and so I've been on the hunt for an adapter to be able to use this coax. I'm looking for a F Type Male to SMA Female adapter, but have had no luck finding anything online so far. Any recommendations would be very helpful!

Thanks,

KO4JZT

Re: Advice for home base set up

David,

Came across these antenna mounts when I was searching online. Don’t know if this is something that might help you out or someone else in the group.

I think I’m gong to purchase one of the two, just have to figure out which one might work best for my situation.

Saturday Night Net Results #simplex-results

Fellow Simplextons:
Yet another big, big, big Simplexton night here in Middle Tennessee!!
We had 40 Hams check in on 146.415 FM
Also had 13 Hams check in on 144.240 USB
Then had 17 Hams check in on 50.135 USB

You can see/hear tonight's net here.

Don't forget the 7:30 PM Nets on Saturday covering D-Star, DMR and C4FM (Fusion) on 146.460

Besides having fun, we are providing a valuable service to each other (mostly to make sure antennas didn't fall down), but also to new and prospective Hams who (hopefully) hear us having so much fun and want to build a better station.

Hope to hear you on the air!!

Wednesday Simplexton Net Results #simplex-results

Another MONSTROUS nite on Simplexton Amateur Radio!!  You can see/hear the net here!!

Check-ins on 146.415 FM were a total of 39 with shabby conditions
Check-ins on 28.415 USB were a total 13 with reasonably good conditions.

Special Notice: There are now 133 Simplextons on our mailing list! This means they are Simplex-minded (not simple-minded) enough to know that a no-dues, no meetings and no requirements club is the way to go.  One doesn't have to do ANYTHING, as we have no rules; the only rule is that there are no rules.

By the way, we are a "real" club with the call sign of KN4NKV. I rarely mention it on the air but, then, what does it matter? There isn't any rule to announce our club call on the air (other than for repxxters), but we do indeed use our personal calls to I.D. when required. (But those aren't OUR rules.) Maybe we'll use the club call if/when we do a non-club Field Day or Special Event.

There are lots of traditional clubs who would love to have the net participation, regular helpful interaction in the group and such a large mailing list, not to mention the twice monthly Saturday morning breakfasts (which you do not have to attend).

If and when we ever decide to have a board meeting, I'll let you know the outcome, but I don't remember who's on the board; am not even sure if anyone knows they're on the board. I'll get back to you. In the meantime:

Hope to hear you on the air!! 'Cause that's all that really matters in Ham Radio.

Re: Advice for home base set up

N4DJT Don Thorpe

GP-1 is a pretty stealthy antenna.. do you have something like Directv/Dish? you could add a short tube to the dish mount and put the GP right above it..no one will notice.. and if they do tell then its for your security system.. lol
Modern homes can present a problem for attic installs, if the builder used that roofing with the foil backing. it can turn your nice Gp1 into a rubber duck in short order.
Have you thought about a fiberglass telescoping mast on tripod in the backyard? you can raise it up at night and lower it  and move it out of sight when you go to bed.. gp1 or (gp3 for that matter) are not very heavy antennas.
benefit there is you could also use that mast for a Off-Center Fed Dipole an inverted V config.
HF presents is own set of problems in super-nazi HOA's but there are options.
a Horizontal loop carefully ran under the rain gutters or the edge of the roof is invisible, if you are not using a amp.. you can use thin wire and feed the thing with ladder line.
another option is to electrically connect your rain gutters and drive them as your antenna. not super efficient but I've worked a few stations doing this.
Mag Loops also are a wonderful option for QRP ops and its portable to boot.
I used to live in a sub-division. (no HOA but I had CCR's and a small lot so i understand your pain.)
but even in the worst HOA's there are options. hang in there and experiment.

Best of Luck

Re: Advice for home base set up

Carl,

Thanks for your input, after talking to Paul I think I will try out the attic and see how that works. If not I will try something on the outside.

Re: Advice for home base set up

Steve,

There are a couple trees near by, but they are outside of my property line. I have used them to get the N9TAX antenna up in the air with decent success
