Date

Santa Claus is Coming to Town: 7 PM CST on December 24th: Last Notice

Santa Claus is coming!
… To a receiver near you.

This year the Santa Net will be once again be soaring through the skies of Middle Tennessee. Each year Tony, KF4KFQ, presents the "Santa Net" bringing Santa across Middle Tennessee. Amateur radio operators will be able to contact Santa during his rounds on the 146.415 simplex and simulcast on 446.415 simplex.

For those heading out of the area or for our non-ham listeners, the Santa Net will be simulcast on YouTube and on Zoom. Just go to: http://youtube.com/c/braintrusts or via ZOOM (See Below)

The Santa Net will begin at 7 PM CST on December 24th (Christmas Eve, Of Course) and will continue as long as traffic holds. In addition to QSO’s with old Saint Nick there will be skits and readings of traditional Christmas favorites.

Sometimes a great introduction to ham radio that entertains the younger set is to let them speak to Santa on the air. Hams are invited to allow 3rd Party traffic to talk to Santa, as well as, provide reports of Santa Sightings and other items of interest on Christmas Eve.

I was trolling through the Repeater Builder email list looking for potential solutions to an issue I'm working on. I came upon this article and thought that some of the more computer oriented hams I know might be able to use this information.

Thanks,

SKYWARN 2021

N9MVF-Ken

Hi folks, N9MVF Ken here.

Just a quick message to remind you that the 2021 severe weather season will be here before you know it.  To that end, I'm hoping to formalize a Wilson County Skywarn group.  Have you enjoyed storm spotting in the past, and/or been part of a Skywarn group, formally or informally?   Want an activity with built-in social distancing :) ? I think we could bring substantial benefit to our local community.

Now, I'm also realistic.. I suspect we'll have some hiccups, false starts, and learning opportunities, but, if we can start working out issues, I think we can make a difference in 2021, and have a smooth running operation in 2022.

To get this off the ground, we'll have multiple roles that need to be filled with multiple people able to perform the functions.  During an activation, we'll need a high-energy net control operator (and backup), a NWS (and other storm path county groups) relay operator to report in and coordinate with other spotter groups (and backup), folks that are able and willing to jump on a net from home when called up, and maybe even go mobile to spot weather activity.

I'm sure some of you have some constructive ideas based on previous issues other groups have had.. I'd love to hear about those solutions!  Always good to avoid issues if you can!

NWS will start publishing class schedules early next year: https://www.weather.gov/ohx/skywarn, and I'll start setting up public access resources (social media, email, web, etc) in the next week or two (I'm off for the holidays! ).

I'll start making the rounds on the local nets in the next few weeks to generate some interest, too.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the air.. 73!

Ken

I have 3 Open Tracker rev. 2 devices for APRS available. These are old (2005 vintage) GPS to radio interfaces, making the radio a dedicated APRS transceiver. 9 pin DB connectors provide the interface between many GPS units and the radio. Documentation is included. I bought these as kits and have assembled them. N1VG is the originator of the kit. There are online support forums linked to his website at https://www.argentdata.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=22. $10 each for the boards.

N Male Connectors Available...old school type (gasp!) UG-1185/U

K4IDC Robin

I have several dozen N male connectors for RG-8, RG-213, 9913 type cables available. These are part number UG-1185/U; much assembly required. They're new, old stock. $1.50 each, 10 for $10.
I have assembly instructions available, and there are videos on YouTube detailing the process, in addition to instructions in the ARRL Antenna Book.
They look like this:
