Access into Yarloop is still very restricted. There was one photo published in The West Australian and Countryman newspapers showing the Y steam loco under collapsed roofing but that’s all I’ve seen in the press.

Most of the TV channels carried some coverage of the fires, including some shots within Yarloop itself. Contacting the Perth TV stations or the West Australian newspaper direct would be a good first start, also perhaps the museum as I suspect they may be monitoring their e-mail again by now:

Adrian Booth's IRS book 'Greenwood & Batley Locomotives 1927-1980' appears not to have an entry for 2374, but shows 2375 and 2376/1951 to Lake View & Star Ltd., Western Australia.  However, it does show 2724 and 2725/1956 as Central Norseman Gold Corporation, Western Australia, per William Adams, Perth.

Have you found additional information that amends Adrian's list, or (easy to do) simply confused 2724-5 with 2374-5?

I have the following battery locomotives listed for this company. They don’t fully add up to the figures quoted.
 
Mancha
1988/1939 – 5½ hp trammer,
3548/1953 – Type AX 20hp. (I’m doubtful about this one as it is marked as 2ft gauge, not 1ft 6in. )
 
Goodman
5232 & 5233/1940 Type 7604T 14hp
Colin Harvey discovered correspondence dated 15 April 1943 from John Carruthers & Co in Sydney to the Victoria State Electricity Commission as follows “Enclose particulars of Goodman Type 7604T storage battery locomotive of which the Central Norseman Gold Corporation are desirous of disposing. This locomotive is perfectly new and has only been run on the works track for testing purposes. It is complete with two Edison 80-A.8 batteries, one running and one spare.” (VPRS 8892/P1, Units 353 and 354).

Greenbat 5hp trammers (agent William Adams & Co)

This does not add up to the eight that the company said it had in service in 1953. Perhaps the balance came from a closed mine elsewhere. One possibility might be the Triton gold mine, which had six 1ft 6in gauge Greenbats and closed in 1947.

5 tonne - 1973
8 tonne - 1975

I overlooked another battery locomotive supplied to Central Norseman.

 

This was a Mancha type locomotive (2810/1948) built for Mancha under subcontract by Wellman, Smith, Owen Engineering Corporation in Staffordshire.

Attached are two pages from a 1953 booklet produced on Central Norseman operations. You’ll see it lists two Goodman and eight Greenbat locos.

 

A series of these booklets were produced on major WA mines for the Mining & Metallurgical Congress and are in the Battye Library (WA collection of State Library of WA) at Accession 2198A.

I have had a quick look at A J Booth's Greenwood book and that is certainly what is printed, I cannot see any explanation but works number 1833 (order 82525) for Columbia dispatch date 16-2-50 is also out of order.

Yarloop workshops destroyed in bushfire

This is absolutely gutting, even for those of us who can’t visit.


It set me to re-reading Gunzberg & Austin: “Rails Through the Bush” which is the only book I have on Yarloop.

On p55 there’s a picture taken at Nanga Brook showing half of a Meat Van.

Does anyone have any more pictures of it please?
In particular, did it have sliding side doors, or just open doorways like the similar Composite van/coach just visible behind a tree to the right, and shown better on p 30?
