Group promotion

BM

The establishment of this group has clearly been welcomed with considerable
enthusiasm by those who know about it and I for one look forward to its
ongoing development with interest.

I have been in touch with Brad re a promotional item in the next issue of
LR. The thinking at this stage is that this should be based on the statement
about the group that Frank has downloaded in the Files section. Any further
suggestions as to how we might promote the Group through Light Railways
would be much appreciated.

Brad, on joining I opted to have the postings emailed as a daily bulletin,
but have not received anything. Is this feature operational as yet?

Hi everyone,
Does someone wish to write a disclaimer
that they feel is suitable for use?
I may be able to squeeze the first bit on the front
page (limited characters allowed and I have already
done much squeezing).
I am thinking the diclaimer could be added as a
footer at the bottom of posts. Yahoo can do this
automatically so it isnt any hassle.

Cheers

why :-)

Proposed LRRSA tour to Erica-Walhalla

sawdustoz <pevans@...>

Hi All,

I am proposing a tour to Erica/Walhalla on the weekend of 18/19
November 2006. The proposed tour itinerary would be:

Saturday Morning: Timber Tramway Tramp at Tyers Junction
Saturday Afternoon: Coopers Creek Copper mine and lime kilns.
Saturday night: Rawson with a possible entertainment item
Sunday morning: Train Thomson to Walhalla, Long Tunnel mine visit and
return via firewood tramway to Thomson.
Sunday afternoon: Kirchhubels tramway south of Erica.

How does everyone feel about the itinerary and the dates? (I am
somewhat constrained by the need to be at Alexandra on the second and
third Sundays). Does anyone know of any other rail activities planned
for this weekend (steam tours / special runs etc.)?

I plan to have a flyer for the October mail-out of LR with mention of
the tour in that issue for those who buy it at the newsagents.

Cheers,
Sawdustoz

Revised Group Description and other updates.

Brad <alcogoodwin@...>

Morning Everyone,
Was just going through Frank's revised group
description.
I would be unable to use that many characters on the front page of
the Yahoogroup however I am thinking we could do the following.

1) I will go through and reword what is there and fits more in line
with what Frank has outlined.

2) There is some way that files can be sent out all people who apply
for membership. I shall work this out and Frank's entire description
will be sent to them to read while waiting for one of us to give
them the nod.

You will notice from this morning that Frank's disclaimer appears
at the bottom of each group posting.

I'm also happy to report a number of people awaiting membership
approval to the group this morning. All well known in industrial
railway circles.

Best wishes
Brad

Re: Revised Group Description and other updates.

Good morning Brad,

I would hold off doing any rewording yet.

At the moment I am working on another version, which takes a different approach. It was prompted by my thoughts on how to link the web site to the Yahoo group.

I will probably have something available this weekend, possibly today.

Regards,

Frank

SB Hopper at Corrimal/Bellambi

BLI BLI <alcogoodwin@...>

Hi all,
Spotted another non air coal hopper that I must
have driven past a thousand times previously and not
seen.
It is located opposite the corner of the Princes
Highway and Bellambi Lane around the old colliery line
formation and appears to form part of a rotting mining
display.
All identification has been removed from one side
while the other has SB and what appears to be the
remains of a number on the underframe.
Have any of our knowledgeable members got a record
of what this hoppers number was?
It seems to be crying out for help and restoration.

Cheers
Brad

I have checked your account and it seems to be all

Shay at Nyngan?

Folks,

Whilst browsing what I thought was the Picture Australia website, but
which the URL suggests is the State Library of NSW, I came across this
image captioned " During the drought, taking water to Cobar - Nyngan,
NSW".

I sincerely doubt that a Shay ever set foot on the track between
Nyngan and Cobar - would appreciate any comments about the likely
location of this photo:

The photo appears to be Wolgan Valley Railway no 2.
It could be on the delivery run to Newnes Junction.

Looks like COC #2 at the loco depot which was half a mile north of Newnes
Junction. According to the diagram in the Shale Railways book the train is
heading to Newnes Junction as the coal stage is south of the water tank.
Also the water tank looks the same in the library photo and in a photo in
the book.

Greetings,

After perusing my copy of the Shale Railways of N.S.W. I would suggest that the loco in the photo is C.O.C. Shay No. 2 and it is Newnes bound. The location is the former locomotive depot half a mile north of Newnes Junction.

Other observations. The track is double headed and the chairs are what was used to secure the track to the sleepers on this line. The only place I have ever seen this type of railway line is in the Lithgow District on former private colliery lines, eg. Piper's Flat. Regarding the signal. There was a signal at this location facing Newnes Junction bound trains, but it is indicated as being located on the map I'm looking at further to the north. It appears to be a signal wire in the fore ground so the map is probably correct. Of course the water tank, which was located on the left hand (western) side of the line. A photograph exists in the book of this, and it is very similar to that displayed here, two banks of three ships water tanks. I would like to say that the eucalypt in the background is similar to the stunted trees that exist on the Newnes Plateau, however, I'm not too sure.

I'll stand corrected of course, but it certainly ain't Nyngan.
