CONTINUOUS BRAKES ON NARROW GAUGE RAILWAYS.
Noel Reed
What are the requirements for continuous (Westinghouse) brakes on narrow gauge light railways which convey passengers ?
The Puffing Billy railway from Belgrave to Gembrook in Victoria and its now closed predecessors which were branch lines from Colac, Moe and Wangaratta had Westinghouse brakes on freight and passenger trains as they were former government railways and operated in hilly areas.
What braking is required on former cane railways now operating passenger trains and passenger carrying heritage railways operated by preservation societies etc ?
Noel Reed.

NQ Livestock Modifications
Hi all,
another request for assistance. In various publications there is made mention of modified NQ wagons for carrying livestock (mainly pigs and sheep) when there were insufficient NMs to hand. Would anyone have the VR drawing for this conversion or some photographs? I'm building a roster of rolling stock based on the Whitfield line - which by all accounts frequently carried a lot of pigs - sometimes exceeding the 4 NMs allocated to the line? A timely discovery Peter. The Feb issue of Light Railways will feature a Research article on vertical aerial photography and how it can assist researchers.

Museum currently closed and administrator appointed due to large debts. Operable steamers 6029 and 3016 are currently stored at NSWRM Thirlmere and the state-owned 44 and 48 class are, I think, at Eveleigh.

Turns out the help button with the (?) on their webpage is good so just work your way through there as it offers a couple of options such as locating via the map or locating by typing a location in the search box https://qimagery.information.qld.gov.au/

I have just downloaded Tweed Heads Coolangatta 1960 and Tugun Currumbin 1930 (attached). Enter Tugun in the search box and it leads to a scroll menu back as far as 1930. Many areas go back as far as 1950s. Cheers Peter Cokley

Having finally got the latest LR, (loved the cover BTW) I note in the letters page the question of Nissen vrs Nissan has arisen. As an author of some papers on the history of Nissan and Quonset huts I think this error is more a determined effort from MS Word to correct to the wrong spelling. Even though I added the correct word into my custom directory Word still kept changing.
If members are interested I have written two papers on huts which are available on-line at Academia (https://sydney.academia.edu/IainStuart ).
Cheers

Stephen Percy Larcombe
This book gives a good run down on the history of semi-circle huts: Quonset Hut Metal Living for a Modern Age by Julie Decker and Chris Chiei I had also been in contact with the historical society at Quonset in the USA, and get a set of drawing and construction plans when I erected an old 40x100 foot hut. Yours Stephen

Not rail related but both mills used tramways in the past so might be of interest. The URL provides the reason why Rocky Pt mill near Beenleigh QLD has to transport cane to Condong mill near Murwillumbah NSW. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-12-07/queensland-farmers-to-truck-cane-to-new-south-wales/8099594
