For those who want to know what the pound has bought over the years, the short item below is from the RAHS newsletter. Only goes back to 1901 unfortunately.

Pre-Decimal Inflation Calculator
The Reserve bank of Australia has a very useful tool on its website, the Pre-Decimal Inflation Calculator, to access, click here. This tool will assist you in calculating the value of amounts expressed in Pounds, Shillings and Pence (Australia’s pre-decimal currency). This can be very useful in determining wages and salaries as compared with the cost of buying land or a house, paying rent or purchasing item(s) between 1901 and 2017. For example, it shows that £1/-/- in calendar year 1901 would cost $150.45 in 2017. The total change in cost is 7422.3 per cent, over 116 years, at an average annual inflation rate of 3.8 per cent.
