Re: Hoffman Brick Company

Iain

Richard,

Sorry my notes don’t mention this (although they do note that in 1939 they got rid of their horses by donating them to the Zoo for the lions!). However the Directors minute books survive and are in the University of Melbourne Business Archives and of course are available for the interested researcher.

Iain,

Without going into too much detail, it would be interesting to know why the company got rid of its loco (new in 1888) by 1903 at the latest. Did VR take over whatever shunting was necessary?

The Hoffman Patent Brick and Tile Company was named because they used the
patent Hoffman kiln (probably the first in Australia to do so). The original
kiln was circular but the later kilns were the more familiar oval shape. The
company was formed in 1870 by building contractors and was the first fully
mechanised brick company in Australian using Hoffman kilns and Bradley and
Craven brick presses. The company has a long and interesting history.

If anyone is interested I have published two articles on the company and
written several reports - I can make the papers available as PDF's.
