Due to lack of interest expressed at the January meeting, there will NOT be hands-on EmComm workshops scheduled for January or February.

Monday report

Robert

Hey babe

Hope you got to play some radio over the weekend. I had my computer all set up to work the NAQP CW, but with this cold I got it was no-go. Next time.

CW practice and Breeze Shooters net tonight on the 64 at 8:15 and Breeze Shooters at 9:00pm on 28.480.

It’s EMCOM Tuesday up the joint tomorrow evening. Andy, AD3AD has good stuff lined up. Also, hang out play radio in the radio room.

It’s EMCOM hang out with Andy, AD3AD this Saturday up the joint.

Also this Saturday is the DX Engineering winter sale. Good excuse to go for a ride?

The fabled Skyview banquet and sword swallowing competition is getting closer, ever close – Saturday the 25th at the Delmont Fire hall. Time is quickly running out to get in on this great event.

Also on the 25/26th is Winter Field Day! Yo Richard – Where you be?

FrostFest is Saturday, February 1st.

Next big contest up the joint is the CQ WPX RTTY contest on Feb 7 – 8 – 9! If you enjoyed doing the RTTY RU, even more fun to be had. We will be running M/2. That’s multiple operators/2 transmitters. That means we can have two operators working at the same time on different bands. Operators needed. This one starts at 7:00pm on Friday night and goes to 7:00pm Sunday night. We hope you can help work.

Next Skyview VE session is Saturday, Feb 15th at 8:15am. Breakfast at E&P in New Ken at 6:45. All welcome. Please let Bob, AG3U know if you plan on helping VE or testing.

NAQP phone contest is Saturday, Feb 15.

Also Saturday, Feb 15 is the Breeze Shooters ground wave contest, CW style! (In the evening) This is a good contest to jump in if you are a new CW op and slow. All your details can be downloaded from the Breeze Shooters web site.

www.breezeshooters.org

Actually, I just looked and it seems the 2019 info is still up, but you get the idea.

Traffic class at the Red Cross building Saturday, Feb 22. See Bob, NU3Q for details.

WASHfest is Sunday, Feb 23!!!

NAQP RTTY Saturday, Feb 29

Two Rivers hamfest is Sunday, March 29th. All new location! More on that as it gets closer.

I think that’s it?

DMR question and response #DMR

Andrew Duli

Due to the proposed EmComm topic for February, I received the following question via email: “Would you please send the make and models of the proposed DMR radio and hotspot.”

First, I am NOT a DMR expert. My only DMR experience is playing with four (4) different radios over the past month.I take no responsibility for anything I type.

Second, I was going to cover this at the monthly meeting in February, if that topic was of interest. And unless ordering from China, that should be plenty of time to get one by the 29th of February.

I am not going to recommend any particular brand of radio, it depends on what you want to spend, what you want to do, will you really use it, do you want DMR at all, where you live, do you want to experiment, are you willing to break the warranty for experimental firmware, do you want what most others are buying (even if it is the wrong one), and a lot more I hope to recall by that meeting.

Don’t forget that DMR is only one digital option, so you need to decide if that is the option, or one of the options, that you want.

However, if you want a jump-start, look at (in no particular order) Alinco (see the December QST for a review), DX engineering, Radioddity, Amazon (here today, unable to order tomorrow), HRO, DMRforDummies.com, GigaParts, Universal Radio, (and using a search engine) https://readyzeal.com/radio/best-dmr-radio/ , https://www.buytwowayradios.com/btwr-essentials-gsk-ham-md-380.html and lots more.

Some other reference info:

https://amateurradionotes.com/dmr.htm

https://www.amateurradio.com/how-to-get-into-dmr-without-a-radio/

https://www.raqi.ca/~ve2rae/dmr/Amateur_Radio_Guide_to_DMR.pdf  (some good info but dated @ 2015)

Lots of wrong, biased and outdated info at YouTube. Don’t use YouTube before exhausting more reliable resources. However, a couple of channels with fairly reliable info:

KM4ACK

HamRadioConcepts

Then there are some channels with basic info. One is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gu-KelHRl2E&t=319s.

CPS programming video (with poor audio and lots of useless video) that has some good info https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=walMTb6sHr0&t=3169s.

The frustration experienced by the presenter concerning DMR at the end is most informative.

A warning about the programming software for the radios; I have not found a Linux version of Customer Programming Software (GPS). Windows seems to be a requirement (except for hotspots).

As for hotspots, the JumboSpot knockoffs (using a Pi Zero W) are the cheapest, and seem to work satisfactorily.

And finally, remember that I am NOT a DMR expert and don't claim to be.

Skyview EmComm Agenda for January 2020

Andrew Duli

EmComm Monthly Meeting is 2nd Tuesday, January 14th starting at 1930 hours.

  1. From the December meeting, the primary goals for January is to have those interested to:
  2. Get a professional and secure email address and use it for the following trainings
  3. Register with ARES Connect https://arrl.volunteerhub.com/lp/wpa/
  4. Get a FEMA SID https://cdp.dhs.gov/FEMASID/
  5. Get any needed assistance in registering and taking online courses:
    1. FEMA EMA IS https://training.fema.gov/emi.aspx
    2. ARRL EC-001 http://www.arrl.org/online-course-registration

For those who cannot attend weeknights and for longer tasks, it was suggested that a weekend “hands-on” workshop be made available. Saturdays were the suggested day. To make sure the workshop does not occur before the monthly meeting, the third (3rd) Saturday has been selected. The Saturday “Hands-On” Workshop will provide more time to complete tasks and for training activities. The workshops will only be scheduled when needed and reasonable efforts will be made to avoid conflicts with other Club/Clubhouse activities.

Also on the agenda will be CPR/AED certifications, social media and ARES, and plans for the February activity (see below).

The tentative agenda for January’s workshop will be for those wanting assistance or “quiet time” while pursuing the training objectives. Since there will be no VE testing this month, I will be there to assist or answer questions from 9am to 4pm. That will be on Saturday, January 18th.

Looking forward, I was thinking about dedicating February to ARES and the push to digital modes. One of those modes is DMR. If there is an interest in purchasing DMR equipment ($300 includes hotspot), programming them, and playing with them, then February would be the month to do that.

Because of global warming, there will be no more snow (ever) so weather will not be an issue, and using the extra Saturday due to leap year, there could be two workshop sessions for the shortest month. This would provide the training time necessary due to the DMR learning curve and hotspot setup.

The tentative schedule would also allow time for those considering the purchase of a DMR/hotspot to learn about their purchase options before actually purchasing the equipment.

On Saturday, February 15th beginning at 11am (due to VE testing) the training would include DMR software programming and PC setup for CPS and hotspot software. Should be done by 3pm.

On Saturday, February 29th  beginning at 9am, the fun begins. Unboxing the DMRs and hotspots, boot & configure the hotspots, update firmware and program the radios (you would have already prepared the code plug); then test, tweak and play. Depending on your circumstances, could be done by noon. Worst case scenario, will be done by midnight.

Any digital/DMR experts are encouraged to conduct or assist in the digital/DMR trainings.

See you Tuesday!

Andy
