Is is possible that I can find the RA/Dec currently and/or a star chart of it? Also, is any website publishing a web page showing path? I have a clear view of Ursa Major early am before sun comes up and would like to use my bino’s to see it. Now that leaves in central Ohio are mostly down by 4:30 am I may be able to train my Tak E180 on it or set up m portable G8/TV102 to view it.
Thanks in advance,

Hi Doug.
The YT video identifies it as Comet C/2019 Y4 ATLAS, so this is old news. It broke up in April 2020 (see attached link)
It's suspected that about 5,000 years ago a comet swept within 23 million miles of the Sun, closer than the innermost planet Mercury. The comet might have been a spectacular sight to civilizations across Eurasia and North Africa at the end of the Stone Age.

The article signs off by saying that it's surviving sibling won't return until the 50th century...!!

I heard that this comet was last here 4,000 years ago. I use Sky Tools which only runs on PC and most everything I use electronically is Mac. My PC is in my shed outdoors and will make it out in next couple of night to see what I can learn about it. Clear Sky is telling me that here in Columbus, Ohio Tuesday night and very early Wednesday looking good for Ursa Major NE of me. I have a pair of "Flak Panzer" binos from WWII that are incredible for viewing special objects etc. Not sure of the spelling, but believe they were made by Leitz Optics in early 42. I usually take to sky parties at our Metro Parks for viewing the night sky and have lots for fun with young eyes looking at the heavens, moon & planets when clear.
Thanks for reply,
Doug

That was the comet 2 years ago just ahead of NEOWISE, but it faded.
That said, comet C/2021 A1 Leonard might get brighter than 4th mag Dec 9-14. On paper it is similar to NEOWISE. We get a plane crossing on the 9th and minimum forward scattering angle on the 12-13 so could be amazing. Fingers crossed!

Thanks for reply & info. The last comet I was able to image was Comet Lovejoy I think some considerable years ago. I have an image of it that was 3 hours total of 5 minutes stacked and processed in IP on my journal under Astro 4mp2i.com. One note for the star trails being brighter was seeing conditions improve during the duration. It was a miracle to get images & stacked & combined much to Mike’s great patience & help.
Unfortunately, due to health issues I have just started to get my components & my mind back in order as I have encored numbers TIA’s & couple of serious strokes, so I am excited to give it another crack on this comet.
Sincerely,
Doug

Well, using TheSky this am this comet is about half way between the Moon & M65/66 in Leo. According to the Sky it is ruffle 23rd magnitude and only imageable through long term astro photography. I have a Tak E180 w/G2 Losmandy that is less than tuned in due to lack of use for nearly a year due to TIA a year ago. I am being to think this story about “Atlas” is really old news and not in Ursa Major at the moment. Kinda like ad for ocean front property in New Mexico...

Hi Doug,
I think that you are finding the wrong comet ATLAS, i.e. C/2020 R4 which is currently close to the Moon in Leo, not C/2019 Y4, which is the one mentioned in the YouTube that Joe posted. ATLAS stands for the survey Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System,
so there is more than one comet Atlas, however, you are correct that it is old news. C/2019 Y4 was predicted to reach mag 1 in the spring of 2020, but it broke up as it passed close to the Sun, so failed to perform as predicted. The remnant of it is now in
Monoceros at approx mag 20.
As Alister mentioned, the most promising comet currently around is C/2021 A1 Leonard, predicted
to become naked eye at around mag 4 next month. Here is a link to a useful resource about it and I'm sure your 1942 binos will show it easily over the coming weeks, so good luck with that.
BTW I took a look at your website journal, which was very enjoyable, so thanks for sharing that.
Regards,
Geof

Thanks for clearing things up for me about the comets. I will keep working to get my gear operational as I have tracking issues that I need too resolve before I can get any long term tracking of anything. Also, appreciate your visit to my journal and comment. I think it’s a well kept secret, which is fine for me.

I have a clear view of Ursa Major early am before sun comes up and would like to use my bino’s to see it. Now that leaves in central Ohio are mostly down by 4:30 am I may be able to train my Tak E180 on it or set up m portable G8/TV102 to view it.Thanks in advance,DougOn Nov 28, 2021, at 2:01 PM, Gedas <w8bya@...> wrote:visible now with scope, maybe a good peak next spring is the way I understood things.Gedas, W8BYA EN70JT Gallery at http://w8bya.com Light travels faster than sound.... Sorry for my error, I am running in six different directions at once and it just doesn't work. SO Maybe you can use this for comets..

Thanks for clearing things up for me about the comets. That explains a lot ! Kinda
ticked off that I read about the mag comet just a week ago in
a S&T newsletter. Why in the world would they publish
outdated info like that :-(

Hi Doug,I think that you are finding the wrong comet ATLAS, i.e. C/2020 R4 which is currently close to the Moon in Leo, not C/2019 Y4, which is the one mentioned in the YouTube that Joe posted. ATLAS stands for the survey Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System, so there is more than one comet Atlas, however, you are correct that it is old news. C/2019 Y4 was predicted to reach mag 1 in the spring of 2020, but it broke up as it passed close to the Sun, so failed to perform as predicted. The remnant of it is now in Monoceros at approx mag 20.As Alister mentioned, the most promising comet currently around is C/2021 A1 Leonard, predicted to become naked eye at around mag 4 next month. Here is a link to a useful resource about it and I'm sure your 1942 binos will show it easily over the coming weeks, so good luck with that.BTW I took a look at your website journal, which was very enjoyable, so thanks for sharing that.
Regards,
Geof
