Hi

Shabowski, Bob <bob.shabowski@...>

I really have not messed much with ImagesPlus yet, but have it loaded and
plan to start playing with it soon. I have heard many great things so far.
Hopefully my laptop PIII 650 with 256MB RAM will handle it. Any
recommendations of operating system? I thought about either Windows 2000 or
XP. Right now I am at Win98.

Thanks

Bob Shabowski

You should be fine with that. I'm currently on a Dell PIII 450mhz
with 256mb RAM and its a little slow, but bearable. Watch Win98 and
upping the RAM. The Win9x doesn't really know how to handle the
higher storage addresses.

I'm fighting with a dual 1ghz XP system right now. I'm hoping the
root cause of the problem is the bum vid card; I really want to see
how it handles IP; its the real reason I got a new system. Not
necessarily for IP (I do love the product, though!) but for over all
image processing.

Here's to the addiction!

Tom,

I had some experience with developing in a Multiprocessor environment.
Actually, I managed the project so I really don't know squat! Anyhow, I
believe the software needs to be compiled to take advantage of
multi-threading, otherwise minimal advantages can be gained by running
multiple processors. I wonder how ImagePlus is being compiled? Mike?

Thanks

Bob

Right-the OS isn't smaht enough to divy(??) out the process unless
explicitly instructed to do so; I'm a mainframe systems programmer on
Big Blue Big Iron :) I didn't see anything on Mike's site about MP
support...but XP and 2k are multi-threaded OS's, so there will be
some benefit.

Too bad I'm just as ignorant in the client/server area as I am with
astronomy and imaging...would have gotten a faster single CPU, but
NOOOOOOOO! I had to listen to the g/f's boss and get the
dualie....rrrrr

Oh well...:D

Just to let you all know, I have been playing with it on a laptop
(Dell 8000) which has 512 megs of RAM and Windows XP. It really flies
on that machine. In fact, I think that XP handles images a bit better
than ME or 98...just an observation from use.
