Dead birds at Deer Flat NWR

Denise Hughes

There are more 100 dead snow geese and gulls at the Deer Flat NWR lower dam. I’ve reported the birds to the IDFG link that Tempe sent out a week or so ago. I’ve also sent photos to the refuge staff.

If anyone sees dead birds in other areas of the refuge please report them.

Thanks for reporting to IDFG and to us. Sad. I hope there's an answer to the explain the deaths.

Thank you for reporting them Denise. I think I saw on Idaho Birding facebook page someone observed many dead/dying snow geese at CJ Strike and the WMA manager for IDFG is aware of that as well.

Sad reoccurring outbreaks these days. How transmissible are these avian viruses to avian scavengers? Raptors, corvids etc. Thanks!

When out at Lower Dam on Sunday (Nov. 27), looks like the number of dead snow geese is approaching, if not past, 200.  They extended from the point just east of the boat ramp to along the westerly shore in the smartweed.  Also saw 5 sick and dying snow geese - 4 on the lake side and one on the canal outlet side.  There were also a couple of dead mallards - one on the steps of the dam near the top and one along the road edge.  Not sure if these are also victims of whatever is killing the snow geese or just had the bad luck of getting hit by a car.

At Murphy's Neck I saw at least 3 dead snow geese and 1 dead Canada goose.

At Upper Dam I saw 1 dead snow goose on the west boat ramp and 1 juvenile that acted sick.

I reported the birds I saw at Lower Dam and Murphy's neck and included some photos of 3 of the sick birds.

Has anything been noted at Fort Boise WMA?

Scavenger birds such as gulls, ravens, jays, raptors can catch and die from avian cholera but it mostly kills en masse waterfowl and coots.

This is very sad news.
Looks like we all need to keep a lookout and report.
Could it be the Avian flu?
