Jon,

Great pics!  It must be Coopers hawk day because I just had one criss-cross in front of me along my walk.  He had immature fine streaks but altogether handsome as always.

We have one picking off the backyard quail every other evening or so - almost like clockwork, just before dusk, or "zero dark birdy," as we call it.

Normally I only get immature Cooper’s Hawks, but this morning an adult male showed up on my bird perch!

I got a good action shot… and some others as well… Enjoy this beautiful day!  Jonathan, Horseshoe Bend

I went and looked this afternoon and got good looks of the same 2 plovers in flight. They are Black-bellied based on having light rumps and dark axillary coverts/wingpits.

There were also Dunlin, Dowitchers, and Stilt, Least, and Semipalmated Sandpipers still present. The Dunlin count was up to 8 but there was only one Stilt Sandpiper today and drastically fewer gulls and Least Sandpipers.

Where are you coming from?  The Dry Lakes playa is located adjacent to Stagecoach Road. I typically get there by heading out of Nampa on 12th St/Highway 45, turn right onto Bowmont, left on Dry Lakes Road (Bowmont t’s into Dry Lakes) and then Dry Lakes makes a 90 degree turn and becomes Stagecoach.  You could also turn right on Missouri or Bennett and the left onto Dry Lakes.

Based on a discussion on the Idaho Bird sightings and discussion page, these are probably black-bellied plovers.  That was based on Bill size, more in distinct supercilium, breast streaking instead of barring, and whiter bellies instead of gray bellies.

Interesting behavior

Patty Ford <patty_ford@...>

Hi all, bit of a story here, bear with me.
So today my cat was outside without me, (please no hate, I love my kitty), he managed to grab an Evening Grosbeak from the birdbath. I saw it from the kitchen window and raced over to the door to save it. As I slipped my shoes on I could hear the Pinyon Jays screaming their heads off. Also some noise from other Grosbeaks. It looked like the bird was dead, kitty was batting it around. All the sudden the Jays attacked kitty. Dive bombing him and pecking at him. He ran away without the little bird. Amazingly the little bird got up and flew away.
I have seen parent birds protect their young but I have never seen a different species protect another species.
Have you seen this befor? Am I just seeing what I want to see? I am completely amazed.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks, Patty

p.s. Kitty has refused to go out rest of the day.
