Re: 2 Arrivals

Brian,

That Rose-breasted phenom of yours is intriguing !! we've chased several in Idaho, missed every time, have since given up on them for our Idaho list.
We had one at our feeders during 15 years in W Colorado, I think for two days

I'm always curious about range expansion, like possibly yours and others' Blue Jays?
There have been several range-expansion happenings in W Colorado over the last 20-25 yrs that include Black Phoebe, Lucy's Warbler, WW Dove, Lesser Nighthawk, and EC Dove of course....
Hereabouts (Treasure Valley), Bewick's Wren has thrown down an anchor just since we moved here 8 yrs ago, and Mute Swans and EC Doves are as well now established as residents
WW Dove appears wanting to be here too, but at a slower pace of arrival

I remember like it was yesterday when Terry Gray showed me the first known EC Doves in Latah County, maybe these by Kas in 2007 ?   https://ebird.org/checklist/S31324189
This looks like the location where he took me so many yrs ago...

Sincere thanks for your informative posts on IBLE, Brian, always....

Larry

Two foy arrivals today. An adult male Rose-breasted Grosbeak came into the feeder & cracked sunflower seeds for nearly 10 min. Haven't pulled my records yet, but first arrival of a Rose-breasted was 3-4 yrs ago & at least one has arrived every spring since. Believe the Blue Jay is fully gone now, last sighting was about a week ago.

The other arrival was a Common Nighthawk that flew over while calling. Always enjoy their call. Finally, a female Am Kestrel was hovering over our west side pasture & suddenly went into a dive, disappearing into tall grass. Only to appear & fly off with a vole in its talons.

Birds at Shakespeare grounds

Diann Stone

How pleasant to walk the paths this afternoon at Idaho Shakespeare Festival grounds. It seems Song Sparrows are everywhere. I was most rewarded by a sighting of a Gray Catbird in the shrubs near water's edge by Papa Joe's picnic area rocks to the far left of the Perkins River Walk sign. That was as about 3-3:15pm 5/31.

Wkend Birding

lcarrigan_55

Have spent majority of this wkend birding, as recent snowmelt raised Snake level & clouded up some of my favorite fly-fishing spots. So, headed to Island Park on Thu & found: numerous Evening Grosbeaks & W Tanagers, also many YR Warblers. A busy pr of Williamson's Sapsuckers working a nest cavity. More: Chipping Sparrows, DE Juncos, Am Robin, Mt Chickadee, Red-breasted Nuthatch & a chance finding of a Great Gray Owl that cooperated for a great binocs observation.

Back home today & seeing Lazuli Buntings, BH Grosbeaks, Yellow Warblers in nearly every cottonwood, Am Goldfinch, House Finch, RT Hawk, Bald Eagle, BC Hummingbirds & House Wrens.

Yes, good try. Some real vagrant showing up here as well as Camas NWR. Might have to go there next May?

At the cabin last w/e, a first at the suet feeder, w tanagers and pine siskins. Bad pic but here is a flycatcher? Dusky?

Might head back to cabin this w/e after dinner Friday, I will drop off plant pots. Rye grass is in the ground, Thanks!

Sadly no pygmy owls at nest box, nor calling at night. But did have a sharpie calling early one AM in tree over back porch.

Also the family bought 1.3 acres directly behind existing property, very pleased with this!

Cheers, RR Let me know if you want to go to Cascade this w/e?
