Day one of count week is off to a good start.  A Least Sandpiper is in the lower dam canal outlet at Deer Flat NWR.  Hopefully the forecasted snow doesn’t send it flying south before Saturday.

Nampa Christmas Bird Count

Denise Hughes

Today starts the count week for the Nampa CBC, 12/18 through 12/24.   Bird species not seen on count day, Saturday 12/21, can be added to the CBC list.

Rules for the count -

1.  the birds must be in the count circle, Caldwell and Nampa and areas in between; north to the Boise River, south to Missouri and Farner, west to the Snake River and east to Garrity in Nampa.

2. count species only, no need to count individual birds

If you are out birding in the count area before Saturday and see any ‘good’ birds please let Cheryl or I know. On count day we can let the area counters know to look for them.

Feeder watchers if you would like to participate in the count by counting birds at your feeders please get in touch with Cheryl or me.  Include your your location so we don’t double count.

That’s Bush League stuff, Larry. If we only get 230 species on our CBC here in San Blas (Jan. 2) I’ll be wanting to slit my wrists . . .

We had 294 species last year, with only 28 counters (that was the most since 1986, however). If I had the team they have in Texas, we’d top 300 species every year. We had 310 with count week birds.

Easy flights to Puerto Vallarta - maybe you’d like to join us . . .

Since we are sharing our fun birds, I had a Townsend’s Solitaire on my CBC this past Sunday from Hales Corners, Wisconsin. Thanks for sending one to us!

Interesting that the Barred Owl is becoming a little more reliable in your area. Common for us. Not sure what that says about the fate of the Spotted Owl.

The 11th Carpinteria Christmas Bird Count took place Saturday, December 14. Weather was mostly clear, but strong winds made things difficult later in the day. Gale warnings kept our pelagic crew on shore, but Dave Pereksta did a great job of rounding up pelagic species from his three seawatch sites. Roughly 75 observers covered the accessible portions of our count circle, finding a preliminary total of 154 species.

Highlights:

More details, including a full species list, will be available from the count's web site at http://www.carpwithoutcars.org/cbc/ within the next few weeks; I'll send another update when it's available.

Thank you to everyone who participated.

Howdy folks

Quick report after the evening tally - we had a record turnout (guessing it was over 60 participants), including a record amount of effort along the northeastern portion of the count circle in the Boise Foothills, and a great pizza feast afterwards.  Before the big reveal, I will say that our group noticed a lower # of songbirds in several places and I heard comments from several other territories - hopefully just a different winter but ???

With several rarities having been seen over the last week, I had high hopes ... and, even though we missed a few species, we had a great turnout with 108 species (!!; includes 5 species never previously counted on the Boise CBC) on count day plus 3 count week species that were missed today but had been seen since Dec 11.  This sets a new record for the Boise count - and we still have 3 days to add some count week birds.

Some highlights:
  • count firsts:
    • Ruffed Grouse (along Boise Ridge)
    • Pileated Woodpecker (along slope N of Lucky Peak)
    • Ovenbird (now here for 6 weeks)
    • Common Yellowthroat (found a few days ago)
    • Bushtit (Peggy's Trail - was a count week species in same area in 2018)
  • other fun species:
    • Pine Grosbeak (Boise Ridge)
    • Evening Grosbeak (3 different areas, first time in years)
    • Northern Mockingbird (2nd time on Boise CBC)
    • American Tree & Lincoln's Sparrows
    • Barred and Northern Pygmy-owls
    • Say's Phoebe
  • Count week species missed today
    • Brant
    • Greater Scaup

I could add a few more to your Boise count for today (Sat. Dec. 14): 21 Mourning Dove, 1 Cooper’s Hawk, 25 House Finches, 7 Lesser Goldfinch, 1 American Goldfinch, and 1 female Anna’s Hummingbird (all in my backyard on 6th and O”Farrell, if that would help! Also, I saw a Say’s Phoebe at Riverstone International School this afternoon.

Congratulations all on the Count.

    • Swamp Sparrow
Count week species we still "need":

Thanks again everyone!!

Re: HARLEQUIN DUCKS near Lewiston

Larry Arnold <larnold47@...>

And I'm seeing only four previously confirmed eBird reports of HADU for Idaho during winter months (Dec-Feb)...
Congratulations Carl   =)

Interestingly, when I search eBird using the "winter" filter, neither of our two warblers (OVEN,COYE) show up yet...   eBird's "mainframe" still chugging along...??   ;-)

WOW … I have only seen them in Alberta, CD

This morning I found a pair of HARLEQUIN DUCKS at the “Pump Station Overlook” (check the eBird hotspot for exact location) on the Clearwater River a few miles east of Lewiston on US-12.  They flew down river, but Katie Sorenson refound them back at the overlook at 9:15, and half a dozen of us are currently enjoying them for the Lewiston CBC.  Photos will be up on eBird, later.
