Re: Snow goose on Julia Davis pond near Discovery center of ID in Boise

Hardly thinking "birding" at all, I was driving by JD Park this afternoon (Monday Jan 6th) about 3:30pm, there was a (the) Snow Goose grazing about 5 feet from the traffic on Myrtle. A nice, unexpected "add" for the 2014 list! Jim Lyons jflyons@... 208-340-0533 Twitter: @jflyons blogs: http://jimlyonsobservations.blogspot.com/2013/08/jim-lyons-blog-sites.html

[Attachment(s) from Ruthann Greene included below] I was wondering if one of you could ID this hawk that was feeding in my yard. I think it is eating a dove although we also have California Quail that come to our platform feeder. The bird was about 14" from the tip of its beak to the tip tail based on measuring the dead flowers in the picture.
Thanks, Ruthann Greene

Boise & Round Valley (south of Cascade) New Year birds
Jason Talbot
On new year's morning while my family slept in, I birded my favorite winter location in Boise - the Boise Greenbelt between Glenwood & Eagle road. There is open water year round. I was expecting to see Larry but I can see now that he was out of town. The fog was thick and I couldn't see far with my first pass on the bike. When the fog lifted I was shocked at the number of birds. Unusual sightings and firsts for this location were Cackling Goose, Northern Shrike, Lincoln's Sparrow & 7 Mute Swans. Other highlights were Lesser Goldfinch, Barrow's Goldeneye (regulars) & most likely a Winter Wren (near orange bridge) but just got a brief glimpse. The Bald Eagles are always a treat and I see them regularly. The final tally was just shy of 50
species. I headed home with a quick stop at Dry Creek Cemetery and picked up a RB Nuthatch, Townsend's Solitaire, GH Owl & Cooper's Hawk. When I arrived home there was a Merlin sitting in my tree until we left for Cascade. I had Bohemian Waxwing's in my neighbor's yard on New year's Eve. While passing through Horseshoe Bend I saw a Bald Eagle, Common Mergansers, Eurasian Collared Dove and a Rough-legged Hawk just north of town. I also picked up 2 more Bald Eagles in a tree just north of the Gardena bridge. When I pulled into the cabin (Peterson Loop in Round Valley - south end of Round Valley Road) I could hear GC Kinglets. Also present in the loop were Mountain & Black-capped Chickadees, Steller's Jays, several Brown Creepers and a Hairy and Downy Woodpecker. I also got my first Screech Owl at that location one evening. While
driving the roads in Round Valley I picked up a couple of Rough-legged Hawks and a Northern Shrike. While my wife and girls were in Cascade shopping, my wife dropped me off at Kelly's Whitewater Park. She said she'd pick me up at the north bridge in a half hour. I hurried along the path and picked up some great birds. My favorite were 5 Pygmy Nuthatches at a feeder along the trail behind the mobile home park. Other highlights included both Goldeneyes, Hooded Mergansers, Mt & BC Chickadees, Downy WP and a pair of Bald Eagles amongst other regulars. I highly recommend the Cascade Greenbelt if you're in the area. My daughter wanted to take some pictures of the river near the cabin so I obliged and loaded up the five oldest. I was hoping for a slim chance for an American Dipper. We parked at Rainbow Bridge (just north of Smith's Ferry) and walked up
river a 1/4 mile. It wasn't long before I pointed down at the river and showed them the little black bird flying in and out of the water from the ice ledges. They thought that was pretty cool when I explained what it was doing. Within a few minutes we saw 2 more Dippers along with a Hairy WP, GC Kinglets, M Chickadees, C Goldeneyes and a few Common Mergansers. It was a great family trip. We also went ice fishing on Cascade Lake while the girls were being pulled on a sled behind a quad to increase the fishing time. Let's just say I had more luck birding than fishing! Northern Hawk Owl update and more
Terry Gray <clgtlg@...>
Hi Birders,
The Northern Hawk Owl was very cooperative for many photographers today. The bird was perched on top of the Spruce Trees north of the Safeway parking lot at 7:30 this morning and was still in the same area at 2:00 this afternoon. Dale Toweill and I birded our way to Steptoe Butte in Whitman County Washington and birded back roads back to Pullman via Kamiak Butte. Very few bird species observed and I think this is the first time I have not seen at least a few HORNED LARKS. There just are hardly any birds in the area right now except a few Harriers, Red-tailed Hawks and Rough-legged hawks. The bird of the day in that area was a lone Bohemian Waxwing as we were returning to highway 195 from Steptoe Butte. Good Birding! Lookin for the Blue Jay
tdtealbirder
We didn't have any luck looking for the Blue Jay but we did see Cedar Waxwing's a Male Downy Woodpecker, Northern Flicker in the area of Anderson and 22 to 24th plus Quail. Was in the neighborhood around 2:30pm maybe so were probably to late for it.
On the way home we say in Payette County, 3 sets of Mallards Male and Females with 2 chicks these were on Hwy 52 at the Payette River, and also saw a Male, Female pair of Great Horned Owls on Little Willow Rd and then saw another Great Horned on our property in one of the trees. Got a late start but found some new birds for this years. Wife wants to blow the Payette Number out of the water this year. WOOHOO Tim

Eagles
Mike Hunter
On our way out to see the “mega load”, in Howe, Idaho, we saw a Golden Eagle, about 4 to 5 miles West of the town of Mud Lake.
Later in the day we went over to the Camas NWR (Hamer, ID), where we saw approximately 15 Bald Eagles roosting in the row of trees along the canal, NE of the Headquarters. We couldn’t get close enough to get good photos, since it is posted “No Entry – so the Eagles can roost undisturbed”.
On the way home we saw another Golden Eagle hunting above the sage brush East of the frontage road south of Hamer, about half way from Hamer to Sage Junction.

Re: California Dreamin' [2 Attachments]
John Shortis
Well the inner half of the wing looks slightly darker than the outer half, suggesting Black-legged Kittiwake. But the wingtip is throwing me here, because it looks
worn, the Kittiwake normally has solid black "dipped in ink" wingtips. The dark leading edge of the outer wing is odd also. The nearly straight line edge of the black against the gray looks good though. John

Good morning all, and belated Happy New Year! We saw this bird recently at the South Jetty, Humboldt Bay, CA. We have a fair idea of what it is, but would anyone like to chime in with your insights? We don’t see any perfect matches in Sibley, re: bill color and molt combo, but you know how that goes, eh? Other field guides are a little more suggestive. Thanks for your comments! Larry Arnold,
Boise BTW, mid-day temps along the N Calif coast were comfy 50s and 60s =)

North End birding
bike4birds
When I saw Danette's posting for the Blue Jay, and then
got an e-mail saying there was a Steller's Jay as well, I mounted up on my bike.
Unfortunately, the only birds at the feeder at 24th and Anderson were a noisy
bunch of BC Chickadees. My consolation prize (in birding there's almost always
one!) was finding A. Robins and Cedar Waxwings in the trees by the
tennis courts at Elm Grove Park. I only occasionally see these on my bike rides
along the river. Needless to say I'll be including that neighborhood on my rides
for a while.
On New Year's Day I was treated to a Common Raven that
flew around the neighborhood making loud croaking noises. It was gone in less
than a minute, but then it came back for an equally short visit the next day.
This is another bird I only rarely see or hear along the river. ( A friend of
mine who lives in Mammoth, CA, sent me their CBC list and it included 405
Ravens! But it also included only a single Hooded Merganser and 2 Common
Goldeneye.)
Right now the best place for water birds is the pond that
sits right along the new Whitewater Park Blvd. There is a large patch of open
water and a large raft of N. Shovelers have been there every day for the last 3
weeks churning the water in a circle to bring food up from the bottom. They are
usually joined by lots of A. Wigeons, a single C Goldeneye, a few A. Coots (the
only place I'm seeing them with all the other ponds pretty much frozen over) and
a smattering of other birds that seem to change daily (hourly?). Especially fun
to get to explain what the Shovelers are doing to curious people passing by. Tom

Hi Birders,
This morning the Northern Hawk Owl must have slept in. I usually see it at 7:30 when I take my wife Christine to work but it did not show up until 9:30 this morning. May have been do to the heavy rain and strong winds we had last night! It has been in Moscow for at least a FULL MONTH NOW! Good Birding!
