Finding Harryproa messages in groups.io
TO FIND ALL MESSAGES CONTAINING A STRING OF CHARACTERS To find all messages that mention "infusing ply", or any other phrase, first click on search: Then enter the phrase in the search box: A list of messages will appear that is pretty smart in that it can find variations of a word -- it will find infusing ply, infused ply, and even ply and infuse separated by a few words. That said, it understands different forms of the same verb, but may not understand that ply and plywood are the same, in which case looking for plywood would be a second search. TO FIND A SPECIFIC MESSAGE #, OPTION A, ONLINE To find a specific message, such as #90, first make sure you're in message view, not topic view: Then the message# search box appears to the right, with the following example set to search for message #90: TO FIND A SPECIFIC MESSAGE #, OPTION B, IN AN EMAIL CLIENT If you're typically an email-only member, and either don't want to or can't go to the groups.io site, you can have your email client search for the message number in parenthesis, which appears at the bottom of each post. In Thunderbird I can put (#90) into the quick filter, or in the body tag in the Search Messages feature, and the #90 post comes up. In Gmail it's even easier, just search for (#90). Or if you get a lot of (#90) hits, search for "groups.io (#90)" - Mike Gerridae wrote on 3/13/2021 10:26 AM: Paul: I don't get the drop down with the msg# box. What I do get is in the right corner of a message within a thread will be the actual message number in blue (link), which will take me out of the thread to the specific message. At that point the address bar will show the actual internet address of that message with it's message number at the tail end after the last / Then I can simply substitute the message number I'm looking for and it will take me to that message. For example if I go to the Unawinch thread, each message will have it's date and number in the right corner.... Mar 7 #497, Mar 8 #507.... etc. I still have no option but to change the number up in the address bar, but that's easy. One isn't usually searching by message number, but it would be a good way to index important messages for future reference. I just save messages of interest, and delete the others as I access the group via Email usually. H.W. On 3/13/21 3:44 AM, Paul wrote: [Edited Message Follows] A8 and Mark to the rescue, ta! Gerridae Apologies, I wanted to send you directly to that message as it was buried in a longish thread which may not have been of interest. I'm just learning about Groups myself and initially struggled to find a message by msg#. However before posting I did find the way to search for a msg# online but I don't think it will help if you interact by email? Go to the messages page Choose topics in the header and a drop down menu appears Choose messages and a msg# find box appears on the header along to the right Hope this helps... Paul
