On Saturday, I'm going to need advice on circular needles to buy.  Does anyone have a needle gauge that is precise?  Mine is an old metal Boye(?), and my Knitpicks needle points are too large for one size and too small for the next one.

Also, I'll be asking for suggestions on what brand to get.

Thanks in advance,

Lucinda

Lucinda,

Gauges vary and US needle sizes are not as fine tuned as European ones.

As for circular needles, are you looking to buy a set of interchangeable ones? I will bring both of my sets as well as some of my circular needles.

Hi Lucinda—

Keep in mind that some brands (cough<Knitpicks>cough) have higher tolerance in their sizes—meaning that one size six needle might not be the exact same diameter as another size six.

I’ve never stressed about needle sizes, because the gauge you get with the project yarn determines the outcome.

I’ve got Knitpicks and Hiya Hiya interchangeables, but now prefer Chiaogoo fixed circulars (red lace) because of the join and the cable.  Handsome Fibers has good service and super-fast shipping, and they typically have a percent-off discount under Coupons.

I’m with Shelley. I am using ChiaoGoo Res Lace fixed. I get them from Mimi’s Needle Basket on Etsy and Handsome Fibers as well. The join is awesome and the cable isn’t stiff like some other brands.

As for the gauge, I'm looking for a metric one.  I'm swatching with a KnitPicks needle that seems to be between a 1 and a 0.

I've never used an interchangeable.

It sounds from both you and Shelley as if I should buy both 16" and 24" from the same manufacturer.  (And this is from a woman who used to knit everything on size 3!  But I can't knit 8/inch on a 3, so I want as few variables as possible on this project.)

Thanks for offering and I'll take you up on it!  I'll have my swatch with me, and can knit an inch or so with each of  your needles.

Aha!  Thanks for the <muttered> warning.  So I want a size 1, probably.

I's swatching with a 16" needle but will need a 24" for the body.

Would you be able to bring size 0 or 1 or 2 in whatever you have?

(I'm doing a circular swatch by knitting over, sliding the stitches back to the beginning of the swatch and letting the yarn drape loosely behind the swatch.  This gives me knit-only on a small swatch.

If  you click on the cover of the book in your web browser, the "Look Inside" feature will open.  I love the first few chapters, and they're free.  I feel so smug when I read it ("They didn't know something that simple?") and so shocked ("They didn't know something that simple?").

Anyway, if you need a good laugh, here it is.

Yarn Dominance

Lucinda Shastid

I think this hat is made by knitting for an inch or so with color A in the left hand and color B in the right hand, and then switching them.  Certainly it was linked to a discussion of that.

Yarn dominance means that the yarn in your left hand is more prominent than the yarn in your right hand.  (Something to do with which yarn comes up from underneath as you knit the stitch.)

https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/stripe-domination

An interesting pattern technique.
