Book on Navajo life, including spinning and weaving

Lucinda Shastid

I'm reading a free Kindle book on Navajo life, https://www.amazon.com/SPIDER-WOMAN-Navajo-Weavers-Chanters-ebook/dp/B075SS4RPW/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1575341817&sr=8-1-fkmr0

It's old-fashioned in its writing, and includes many interesting factoids on naming, culture, etc., as well as snippets on Navajo weaving and spinning.  (example: her white yarn was smooth and strong because the white wool is smooth and strong.  Black wool is shorter and more crimpy, so the black yarn is much harder to work with.  Grey wool is a blend of black and white, so the yarn is ....)

The book isn't for everyone, but since it's free, I wanted to mention it.

Hope to see you all this Saturday.

Lucinda

Knit Picks ball winder question

Catherine C.

Does anyone have any first-hand experience with the Knit Picks ball winder, please? It's currently on sale for about $5 off ($15, instead of $20).

I'm hemming and hawing about it because it's about half the price of the Knitter's Pride brand, so I'm wondering about the quality and durability of the Knit Picks brand.

I won't necessarily buy the Knitter's Pride instead of the Knit Picks... just comparing brands.

Thank you-
Catherine

OT - protect your cell phone

Lucinda Shastid

From the NYT this morning: Don't charge your phone by using that random cable found at an airport charging station or docking into that hotel USB port.

"Juice jacking happens when unsuspecting users plug their electronic devices into USB ports or use USB cables that have been loaded with malware.

The malware then infects the devices, giving hackers a way in. They can then read and export your data, including your passwords, and even lock up the gadgets, making them unusable.

[The specialist] cautioned against using USB cables found already plugged into charging stations or even given away as promotional gifts.

“You can easily brand these things so you can make it look like any other cable,” he said, adding, “When people see it, they don’t really think or expect it to be malicious in any way.”

Other ways to protect yourself include carrying your own charging wires, only charging directly from an electrical outlet and using portable batteries that were bought from known vendors, Mr. Arsene said."

I'm sure most of us are already careful about malware, but I hadn't heard of this angle before.

Its a cute cartoon. Read the comments. One made the comment along the line - are there just males or females.

Where the video is likely to be spot on is when it describes physical differences with male and female brains. No so much with "softer" comparisons that one could easily dispute.

Add to the site that Shelley recommended.  Borrow some of the titles from your library. That way you can see if you like one book over another.
The New Knitting Stitch Library  - Lesley Stanfield
Kaffe Fassett's Pattern LIbrary - primarily color patterns, but could be converted to knit purl patterns
Sequence Knitting -
Mon Tricot 900 Stitch Patterns (mentioned as hard to find). It is a paperback and therefore quite portable
Knit Stitch Guide - Rita Weiss  - small and compact

Nicki Epstein has several books on edging -

I recommend any of Ann Budd's books on knitting. Take one of her basic patterns based on calculations and add a pattern to it. All are published by Interweave Press.
