I agree with Shelly.  We need to get the word out and Shelly’s suggestions are great!

I learned about the Hilltop Hanover group from Jane at a WKG meeting when I asked, Is there a spinning group in the area?

My $0.02:

1) I hate spinning outdoors. (I won’t ask anyone else not to, I’m just not eager to do so myself.) I think if we asked nicely for permission to place a tasteful sign in the sale area, that would let people know. Or an ad on the farm website. Or both.

2) Places to advertise/spread the word:

  • Ravelry Hudson Valley group
  • Ravelry Spinners group(s)
  • Ravelry Rhinebeck group
  • Ask stores/farms that sell wool for permission to post a sign (wool shop in Cornwall, Faraway Farms, etc.)
  • Craigslist “groups” category
  • Westchester Knitting Guild newsletter
  • Do we consider ourselves a guild? If so, we can get listed with Northeast Handspinners on their web page.

Hannah has offered to create a few options for a graphic, but it will take a few days as she is still recovering and school is starting; I’ll get back to you soon.

If you would like to go on a recruitment offensive, might as well ask now: would anyone like a snappier name for the group? Is it Hanover Knit and Spin? Hanover knitters and Spinners? Do we want to keep Hanover if there is any chance we’ll leave the farm eventually? If there is any interest in changing the name that should come before the advertising.

Shelley

There are a lot of knitting groups in the area, I think that we are unique in also being spinners, so this is one place to focus our efforts.

We can spin in public in front of the Farm Stand during good weather.  Maybe move some chairs out by the composting toilet  so we don't block the selling area?

What about talking up our group when we knit with others?  (It's good to be able to make exactly the kind of yarn you want)

Lucinda,

I’m sure if you approached Cindy at the library about this. She would be very open to it. She can put on the monthly calendar a two day , two hours each, “ learn to spin the yarn you like to knit with”.
The instructors would have to bring their own spindles and some wool, which I’m sure you’d get reimbursed for. Bring one or two spinning wheels so they can see how that’s done and maybe there will be some interest. Invite them after the second class to come to you meet ups to practice or learn more or to come and knit.
I know I haven’t been there in quite sometime. I’ve had some medical issues. Slowly I’ll have to get back to knitting and spinning. Are you meeting in the same farm? Which Saturday? Time?

Good luck
Angela
