February EAS Virtual Meeting - Thursday, February 18th at 7:00 pm

Amy Baker

We are very excited about this month's Eugene Astronomical Society meeting, with the always fascinating Bernie Bopp returning for another wonderful talk. If you've seen his earlier presentations, you know you're in for a treat.

Triton and Neptune: Time for a Return Visit!
A presentation to the Eugene Astronomical Society by Bernie Bopp,
Professor of Astronomy emeritus

Neptune, the most distant planet in the solar system and its large satellite Triton have been visited by spacecraft only once.  In August 1989, the Voyager 2 mission flew past the planet and its moon, sending back detailed and puzzling images.  Neptune, like its “twin” Uranus, is an “ice giant” roughly 17 times the mass of Earth, with a hydrogen/helium atmosphere, rocky core, and a high proportion of water, methane, and ammonia ices.  Triton, the seventh-largest moon in the solar system, is geologically active with a young (nearly impact crater-free) surface.  A modern spacecraft mission to the Neptune system – perhaps an orbiter/lander probe like Cassini-Huyghens – could begin to unlock the origins and evolution of this remarkable and poorly understood system.  It’s time for a return visit, and there are even plans for an innovative mission…

Don't miss this one, Thursday, February 18th at 7:00 pm. Mark it on your calendars!
Please note that another date may have been given for this month's meeting, but February 18th is the correct date.
