Heart of the Valley Astronomers August 2021 monthly meeting
Mike Kristosik
Hi fellow Astronomers, The Heart of the Valley Astronomers monthly meeting is almost here. We have exciting news to share with you regarding this meeting. We have a guest speaker, Jared Males, for our August meeting. Jared is going to talk about "Imaging Exoplanets and Searching for Life with the Giant Magellan Telescope". Jared is the Principal Investigator of he NSF funded extreme adaptive optics system MagAO-X, which is used at the Magellan Clay 6.5 m telescope in Chile. He is co-leading the development of a concept, currently called GMagAO-X for a 21,000 actuator ExAO system on the Giant Magellan Telescope which will enable the search for life on the nearest terrestrial planets when the GMT is completed. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers. Because of Jared's talk our agenda for August will be adjusted to accommodate the length of the presentation. So, the agenda will look like this; Announcements - We have a few things to bring you up to speed on Updates - Upcoming virtual astronomy classes; Upcoming virtual star parties Presentation - Dr. Jared Males: Imaging exoplanets and searching for life with the Giant Magellan Telescope If time permits we'll add the following to our meeting agenda; What's up in the sky this month? This month's constellation Sharing Here's to an exciting HVA meeting for August 2021! Below is the Zoom information;

Selling my iOptron AZ Mount Pro
ccd astro
Hi Astronomers,
Recently upgraded to another mount for star parties and such. Before I put it on Cloudy Nights for sale I though I would give you all a chance. The mount is 4.5 years old, bought it for the eclipse. It is in excellent shape, handles my C8 perfectly. If you are looking for a quick set up visual only mount this is great. Price is $750, which includes the mount, tripod and case. Would consider delivering in the Willamette Valley, or meeting half way. Shipping will be expensive. Thanks, Tom Carrico

Re: Outreach Opportunity /Philomath - Kings Valley August 7 SAT - GSAC

STAR PARTY / STAR PARTY ! The girls scouts astronomy club, as part of a scout camp, is having an astronomy night on August 7 (SAT) The girls have had virtual meetings for a long while and perhaps have had astronomy outings with parents, but all star parties have been on hold - so there is excitement for an astronomy night. . The expected viewing audience might be 10-12 people, and there are 3-4 scopes attending (myself included). If you would like to help out and bring another telescope, this is a good outreach opportunity. The girls are eager to get some hands on telescope viewing time. This event is in Kings Valley and would be a really long haul for Eugene folks, which is why this invite is going to the HVA. Also, it is probably best if you wish to participate that you have had vaccination as there are unvaccinated youth participating. Contact Trish Mace for details if you are interested. Re: July EAS Virtual Meeting - Thursday, July 15th at 7:00 pm
I have no idea why, but for some reason there is 19 minutes of black screen that was added to the beginning of the video. Just bizarre.
I'll try to fix it later in the week, but it takes several hours to render the video once you've edited it, and more than two more to upload to YouTube, so for now just skip ahead 19 minutes and you'll be fine. - Amy

For privacy reasons, the video cannot be found by searching YouTube, but anyone with the link can view it. If you have friends that a neutrino fans, they can watch the video if you send them the link. - Amy

Dark space dust
Hi,
During last night's meeting space dust was mentioned. My image of IC4604 shows a dust storm that is quite apparent. The triple star at the center lights this portion of the Rho Ophiucus nebula. This was taken at a dark site July 10. No imaging filters were used. Asi533mcpro and Sharpstar 76mm triplet at 335mm. 3 hours of data were accumulated plus calibration frames. Enjoy, Andy P.S. Apparently my scope supplies some 'flare' over the brightest stars, when in this configuration. Oh well.

July EAS Virtual Meeting - Thursday, July 15th at 7:00 pm
Bernie is back!
One of the Eugene Astronomical Society's most popular speakers is back for our July EAS meeting. Bernie Bopp will be teaching us all about neutrinos. But I'll let him tell you about it. Neutrino Astronomy or
Why Spend Time and Big Bucks Looking for (nearly) Massless Subatomic Particles that Hardly Ever Interact with Ordinary Matter??
Neutrino astronomy is BIG astronomy. The telescopes are HUGE – cubic kilometers in volume – and require thousands of detectors. Neutrino telescopes must be located in places where they never see photons from the night sky – all of them are buried kilometers below the surface of the Earth in deep mines or even embedded deep in the Antarctic ice. Of course this means they are frightfully expensive to build and operate. And all of this is done to detect dozens of neutrinos, ghostlike subatomic particles that are electrically neutral, with uncertain mass probably no more than a millionth the mass of the electron. In this talk I’ll try to explain why neutrinos are so interesting and important to our understanding of nuclear reactions in stars, supernovae, and even dark matter and galaxy formation. As a special bonus, neutrinos will be readily available throughout this entire talk, with no charge, either monetary or electrical!

Re: Virtual meetings vs in person meetings?
Kay Wyatt
I think that both in-person and
virtual meetings are valuable and like the idea of a quarterly in-person
meeting. For many of us living on the coast, our closest club is HVA and
the Zoom meetings have really made it more accessible.

Subject: Re: [HVAAstronomy] Virtual meetings vs in person
meetings? I agree with Amy. I think we should continue monthly zoom meetings
basically forever, but have an in person meeting quarterly as well. This meeting
would have some special purpose, like a swap meet, pizza feed, or just a session
where we can all sit around and chat about astronomy. The zoom meetings allow
way more people to attend, I would hate to give that up.
Same thing with star parties. We should continue to do virtual star parties
along with real ones at Adair. I think this will maximize attendance and provide
everyone with more views of the sky.

Cave Nebula SH2 155
Hi, I have been working on my version of the Cave Nebula in Cephus. Sh2-155 apparently goes by several designations like many other objects. I observe the extensive presence of the dark clouds and bok globules that make the shape what it is. The violent strength of the star formation areas central to the image really contrast and catch my eye. I really like the summary about SH2-155 on telescope.com for background information.
