Date

October EAS Virtual Meeting - Thursday, October 21st at 7:00 pm

Amy Baker

Mark your calendars for next week's meeting of the Eugene Astronomical Society!

This month, we have Jeff Phillips giving a fascinating talk on planetary imaging.

Planetary Imaging: Using a Planetary Camera

High speed CMOS cameras have revolutionized planetary imaging. When I got into astronomy 30 years ago the best ground based photos of the planets were vague and featureless, even when taken with professional telescopes like the 60 in telescope at Mt. Wilson. Today amateurs routinely outshine these professional photos with 8 inch backyard telescopes.

I want to share a few of my pictures and talk about how you can learn to take great pictures from your own backyard.

Telescope for sale

John

I have a friend whose husband has gone into a memory care facility, and she wishes to sell his telescope. Neither she nor I have any expertise in astronomy telescopes but we do recognize his telescope is a high quality model in excellent condition. It is a Meade Model 38 Dec motor with tripod. The scope is in a large protective case. Since we can't figure out how to assemble it, The photo of an assembled scope is a photo online I found online which looks identical to her husband's model. Would anyone be interested in purchasing it? I'm relisting this here to add another picture.

For the September meeting of the Eugene Astronomical Society, we decided to just have a little fun, and we hope you are able to join us!

In the past, some of the best times have been when we all just get together and shoot the breeze. No specified topic, no agenda - just all of us hanging out and reacquainting ourselves with each other.

If that sounds like a good way to spend a Thursday evening, then click on the link highlighted below when 7:00 pm rolls around this Thursday and meet us there!

Please note that, due to the type of meeting we have planned, we will NOT be recording this month's meeting. If you want to participate, you will need to join us live.

International Dark Sky Association Call For Images

Amy Baker

In case you're interested.

IDA is a legitimate organization, requesting images for their 2022 Oregon calendar. Details below.

Thank you for making our 2021 inaugural dark sky calendar such a success!

We are excited to announce the upcoming 2022 Oregon-focused dark sky calendar.  This calendar will feature night sky views over Oregon landscapes. The calendar will be spiral bound, 8.5 x 11 and printed in high quality on heavy card stock.

Do you have photographs or paintings of the night sky over an Oregon landscape to contribute to the calendar? Want to get some recognition and a free calendar if your image is chosen?  See below.  We'll send a separate email later with information on how to order calendars.

Want to submit an image for consideration in the Calendar?

1) Email your images in JPG format, in a low-resolution file (size less than a few MB) to idaoregon@.... We will request a high resolution version of the image and descriptive text to be printed in the calendar if selected.

2) Set image proportions to 9" x 12" (so that it can be trimmed to prints on 8.5" x 11" size paper, with ink all the way to the edge).

3) Submit as many images as you wish.

4) Deadline to submit your images is the end of Sunday, October 3rd.

We plan to print the calendars by early November and to distribute them soon after.

Discover the Night Skies is offered through the Corvallis Parks and Recreation department. The cost is $8.00 for residents and  $10.00 for non-residents. You can sign up at the Corvallis Parks and Recreation website. If you don't already have an account with them, you will need to create one, and they will send a link to the class.

It's a good idea to create an account anyway, since the free virtual star parties are hosted by Corvallis Parks and Rec as well.
